For at least 3,000 years, there have been many Chinese stories and poems about giant pandas. It's said that emperors kept these bears as a sign of wealth. A giant panda's skull(头盖骨)was found in the tomb of a wife of an emperor who lived over 2,000 years ago. Skins and bones of pandas have been discovered in older tombs as well. Today pandas are China's national symbol of peace and friendship.
All the forests of southern and eastern China were once the home of pandas. Now they live in the south-central mountains of Sichuan, Shanxi, and Gansu Provinces. The Chinese government has set up nature reserves in these mountains to protect pandas and other species of plants and animals.
Giant pandas have been known to spend up to 16 hours a day eating. They eat 30 to 40 pounds of food in one day! The reason why pandas eat so much is that bamboo doesn't have many nutrients (营养物). Bamboo is also hard to digest (消化) and pass through their bodies very quickly.
Pandas in the wild might live for 20 years. Pandas live longer in zoos. Hsing Hsing, a panda lived in an American zoo, died at the age of 28. In China, pandas in zoos have lived to be even longer.
After mom died, I began visiting dad every morning before I went to work. He was weak and moved slowly, but he always had a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice on the kitchen table for me, along with a note, reading, "Drink your juice." This, I knew, was as far as dad had ever been able to do in expressing his love.
In fact, I remember, as a kid I had questioned mom "Why doesn't dad love me?" Mom replied, "Who said he doesn't love you?" "Well, he never tells me," I complained. "He never tells me either," she said, smiling. "But look how hard he works to take care of us, to buy us food and clothes, and to pay for this house. That's how your father tells us he loves us." I nodded slowly. I understood in my head, but not in my heart. I still wanted my father to put his arms around me and tell me he loved me.
Dad owned a small scrap metal (废旧金属) business. He fed scrap steel into a machine. The machine looked like a giant pair of scissors, with blades (刀刃) thicker than my father's body. If he didn't feed those terrifying blades carefully, he would be seriously injured. "Why don't you hire someone to do that for you?" mom asked dad one night. "Why don't you hire a cook?" dad asked, giving mom one of his rare smiles.
Many years later, during my first daily visit, after drinking the juice my father had squeezed for me, I walked over, hugged him and said, "I love you, dad." From then on I did this every morning. My father never told me how he felt about my hugs, and there was never any expression on his face when I gave them.
Have you ever imagined that your simple T-shirt could cool you down by up to 5℃ on these hot summer days? Thanks to a recent discovery, the possibility is getting closer. An amazing invention can help those who want to feel comfortable and fresh in the outdoors on extremely hot days.
Its inventors, engineers Ma Yaoguang and Tao Guangming, made a great discovery. They designed a special textile (纺织物) that can absorb body heat and send out its energy into space as MIR (中红外辐射). This textile cools both the objects and their surroundings. This means that you are actually wearing a shirt that works like a mirror.
Scientists at Stanford University in 2017 had already managed to cool the wearer by 3℃, but this was not enough. So researchers still need to test the new textile to see how effectively it works while the wearers are taking outdoor activities. They also need to examine how well it works when T-shirts are not in close contact with the skin.
Ma and Tao are now looking for producers that are interested in using their textile. They believe that the new material will increase costs by just 10 percent. "We can make it with mass production (大批量生产), which means everybody can get a T-shirt and the cost is basically the same as their old ones," Ma said.
So if you are an athlete or simply someone that has to deal with the extremely high temperatures, be patient because your days of feeling hot may come to an end soon!

I was lucky to serve as a Dorm Administrator (宿舍协管员) for two years at Manhattanville College, which has students from more than 50 countries. I talked with a lot of freshmen(大一新生)who had trouble living in a dorm room.
Make your room as YOU as possible. It's your HOME. Show your style. Put up the posters you like. Do whatever you can to make your room a comfortable place, so you'll feel right at home.
A clean room is a happy room. Cleanliness is important whether you share a room with one person or seven. Thus, your room will be always clean.
Snack time is the best time. Some colleges have dining 24 hours a day, while others offer no food after midnight. Have snacks on hand because you'll get hungry during those late-night homework adventures. And remember the Freshman 15 doesn't apply only to freshmen.
The key to getting along well with others is communication. If there's a problem, ALWAYS talk it out with your roommate first. If you still have problems after talking, turn to your DA for help.
