    Hadrian's Wall, England

Hollywood is getting more confident in the recovery of the US film market after Warner Bros' monster mash Godzilla vs. Kong scored huge box office returns in early April. Meanwhile, Hollywood is also eyeing the Chinese market, with offerings including Universal's action film Fast and Furious 9. However, they should realize that after the deadly pandemic, Chinese audiences have more interest in movies that tell a good Chinese story.

James Cameron's documentary The Six and Marvel's superhero film Black Widow are scheduled to be released on April 16 and July 9 respectively, and DC comics has produced a new superhero, Monkey Prince, based on the Chinese legendary Money King. Obviously, Hollywood is hoping to earn big in the world's largest film market.

But looking back to the Hollywood blockbusters in 2020, their box office performance in China was a big disappointment. According to China's ticketing platform Maoyan, Disney's Mulan, DC's Wonder Woman 1984 and Warner Bros' Tenet earned 278 million yuan ($42 million), 167 million yuan and 456 million yuan, respectively.

Meanwhile, homegrown Chinese films are getting more popular, which can be seen from the box office during China's Lunar New Year holiday in 2021 and the Qingming Festival. Chinese feature film Sister, which deals with sister-brother relationships, quickly defeated Godzilla vs. Kong during China's Qingming Festival holiday.

Many observers said that Chinese audiences want to watch films that tell a good Chinese story, and the tear-jerking comedy Hi, Mom is a perfect example. The film tells a warm story of a mother-daughter relationship and has grossed 5.397 million yuan as of Thursday, according to Maoyan.

Maybe it is because of the COVID-19 epidemic that Chinese people are turning their eyes more toward their own stories. If Hollywood still cannot really understand and respect Chinese culture and just randomly mixes some Chinese elements into their films, it will lose a large amount of its fans in China.

    1. (1) What does the underlined expression in the second paragraph refer to?
A . The Chinese film market. B . The US film market. C . The Hollywood film market. D . The Maoyan film market.
    2. (2) What did Chinese audiences think of the Hollywood blockbusters released in 2020 in China?
A . The films earned big money in the box office. B . The films defeated these homegrown films in China. C . The films failed to meet the Chinese audiences' expectation. D . The films were criticized for mixing Chinese elements into their films.
    3. (3) Why is the film Hi, Mom seen as a good example of successful films nowadays?
A . It is about a warm story between a mother and a daughter. B . It is about a story that makes you laugh and cry at the same time. C . It mixes many Chinese family elements into the film successfully. D . It satisfies many people's interest in a film to tell a good Chinese story.
    4. (4) How can Hollywood make a change to keep its fans in China?
A . Try to base its story on Chinese legendary. B . Mix many Chinese elements into their films. C . Show true understanding and respect for Chinese culture. D . Make the films to solve the mother-daughter relationships.

Journalists are the major group of people who make their living from writing. Many young people who see themselves as future novelists choose journalism as a way of earning a living while developing their writing skills. Although writing for newspapers and writing for books require different qualities, the aspiration (志向) to be a great writer is not one to be discouraged in a would—be journalist.

Most people want their work to be recognized by others. This helps to give it value. Some people also want themselves to be recognized, so that they have status (地位) in the eyes of society. It is not a bad motive to wish to be famous, but this must never become your main reason for being a journalist. You will not be a good journalist if you care more for impressing your audience than for serving their needs.

Knowing the power of the printed or spoken word or image, some people enter journalism for the power it will give them to influence people. There is a strong belief that journalists control the mass media but the best journalists recognize their role as servants of the people. There is a difference between the desire to influence events for your own sake, and the desire to do it for other people. You should never use journalism for selfish ends, but you can use it to improve the life of other people.

Curiosity is a natural part of most people's characters and an important ingredient for any journalist. Lots of young men and women enter the profession with the desire to know more about the world without needing to specialize in limited fields of study. Most journalists tend to know a little bit about a lot of things, rather than a lot about one subject. Knowledge has many uses. It can simply help to make you a fuller and more interesting person. It can also give you power over people, especially people who do not have that particular knowledge. Always bear in mind that power can be used in a positive way to improve people's lives.

    1. (1) What can we know from the first paragraph?
A . Journalists are most likely to become great writers. B . Writing for newspapers is similar to writing for novels. C . Journalism can be used as a means to improve writing. D . Most of the journalists make a living by writing books.
    2. (2) Why do some people want themselves to be recognized?
A . To earn much wealth. B . To get great power. C . To gain high position. D . To learn rich knowledge.
    3. (3) What is most necessary for journalists according to Paragraph 4?
A . Having a wide range of knowledge. B . Being specialized in a certain field. C . Being good at making friends with others. D . Being able to speak a foreign language well.
    4. (4) What does the text mainly talk about?
A . The development of journalism. B . The challenges journalists face now. C . Why people choose a career in journalism. D . How to become a qualified journalist.

A new report connects eating eggs to an increased risk of heart disease. The results follow several earlier studies that found eating eggs was generally healthy. The study collects data from six other earlier studies. It shows a 6 percent increased risk of heart disease when the number of eggs a person ate each day increased by half an egg.

Norrina Allen, an associate professor at Northwestern University said that, in the United States, eggs are generally one of the top sources of cholesterol(胆固醇)in a person's daily food. People with higher levels of cholesterol in their food are at increased risk of the development of heart disease later in life. However, Allen added that she would not say that eggs are completely unhealthy. "I'm not saying that people should take them completely out of their food," she said. "I'm just suggesting that people eat them in a proper amount."

Some experts believe the new study does not prove that eggs are causing heart disease. "Cholesterol's role in the development of heart disease has been discussed for more than 30 years," said Bruemmer, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. "This study does have clear shortcomings, including self-reporting at a single time point," he added.

Bruemmer said, "Eggs in moderation(适度)are probably acceptable from a nutritional standpoint." "Moderation," he added, "is less than one egg a day, including eggs in foods such as bread."

Holly Andersen, a doctor at the NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, agrees that the study has "real shortcomings". One problem Andersen has with the study is that a lot of the egg-eating people in the study also appeared to be eating much meat and processed meat. "If you're taking a lot of processed meat, it doesn't matter how many eggs you're eating," Andersen said.

Also, Andersen said, "The study can only show there is a relation between eggs eating and heart disease. But it cannot prove eggs are the cause of the disease. It may just be that people eating a lot of eggs are also taking a lot of bacon."

    1. (1) What does Norrina Allen agree with?
A . Eggs are completely unhealthy. B . Eggs contain the most cholesterol. C . Eggs should be eaten in a right amount. D . Eggs have no connection with heart disease.
    2. (2) What is Bruemmer's attitude towards the study?
      A . Interested. B . Doubtful. C . Concerned. D . Hopeful.
    3. (3) What can we learn from Holly Andersen's words?
A . Eggs and meat cannot be eaten together. B . Processed meat may cause heart disease. C . Processed meat should be avoided. D . The study is supported by evidence.
    4. (4) What's the best title of the text?
A . Do eggs cause heart disease? B . Are eggs the top source of cholesterol? C . What's the proper amount of eggs eaten? D . Is the cholesterol to blame for heart disease?

I'd never heard of the yangqin, 18th century Chinese stringed instrument, until this past Sunday on April 11, 2021, when I had the pleasure of hearing music master Wenzhuo Zhang perform on it in a virtual concert.

Wenzhuo, a Chinese native, began her training on the yangqin she was only 5. At 13, Wenzhuo (win) a scholarship to the Arts School of Hebei Province; the (high) competitive program only accepted a single yangqin student every two years. After graduation, she placed first in nationwide auditions and (admit) into the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in Beijing, she was awarded her bachelor's in yangqin performance in 2005.

The yangqin is a unique and beautiful instrument and its sound, (combine) with Wenzhuo's musical ability, allowed the four greatly different pieces to stand together. Norwood, a junior at St. Petersburg^ Lakewood High School, participated in the school's Athletic Lifestyle Management Academy. The program prepares students for various careers in health science with two components. The first one is a hands-on skills component where the students have to demonstrate that they are expert in the skills of adult, child and infant CPR (心肺复苏术), how to help somebody who's choking, as well as how to use an AED (自动体外除 颤仪).And the other is a written test component, showing that they master that knowledge. Norwood took a great interest in the programme, which was in line with her initial career pursuit in the future.

On the first day of the programme, her instructor Miller did vital signs and students learned how to take blood pressure, check pulse, and apply CPR. Norwood watched closely and performed the hand-on skills well.

Norwood and Simmons shared a long friendship. They had been friends since the seventh grade and since then they had built an unbreakable bond. The following day after school, the 16- year-old girl Norwood was driving three friends home in St. Petersburg, Florida, when another driver slammed into her from her left and sent her car rushing forward in an uncontrollable way.

“We crashed in someone's yard and I hit the tree," Norwood said. The impact jammed shut the driver's side door, so Norwood climbed out of the front window. Two of her friends managed to get out of the car unharmed, but the collision caused her 16-year-old friend Simmons to hit her head on the backseat window.

When Norwood turned around, she didn't see Simmons running with them so she had to run back to the car as fast as she could. Simmons was just sitting there unresponsive. Apparently, she passed out owing to the huge impact force. The unexpected crash left the girls in panic. A lot of people started to gather around to see what was happening. The crowd watched in astonishment, open-mouthed. Someone advised to make an emergency call immediately.
