"Sean, I don't want to ask you again. There are trash bags in the trunk of my car from the party the other night. Please1 the trash."
"Okay, Dad."
As a light-hearted teenager, I often 2 to empty the trash bags in Dad's Ford. However, I told my father I would, because I had a lot of things to do that Saturday afternoon. I had asked my dad if I could use the Ford, 3 he said no because it wasn't his car. He 4 it from his friend. Later I took it anyway because he was 5 and I was sure he wouldn't notice.
I enjoyed myself and felt great. On the way home, though, I hit the back of the car which was in front of me6 was seriously hurt, but both cars were seriously damaged. I would never forget the most terrible7 of my life.
Dad, I had an accident. "8 ? ARE YOU OK?""
"The cars are damaged. No one's hurt," "IN WHICH CAR?"
9 car."
"NOOOOOOO!!!" By this time I was holding the phone six inches away. And my ear 10 hurt.
I had the car pulled to the repair shop to see if they could save it. Since it was 11 , they told me they wouldn't be able to work on it until Monday. On Monday my dad received a call from there pair shop. The manager said that when his people opened the trunk to 12 the car, the smell of trash (the trash I forgot to empty) was so awful that they 13 to work on the car.
For the next several weeks I was in the doghouse. It wasn't just the crash he was so mad about. He was mad because I'd broken two 14 : "I won't take your car, Dad." and "Don't worry, Dad. I'll take the trash out of the trunk. "I deeply regretted what I had done. It took me a 15 time to rebuild my relationship with my dad again.
Gardening is a popular activity all around the world. But what about people who do not have the space to garden? Not to worry! Today, we will give you information about growing beautiful window boxes.
Location and safety
Window boxes are not just for the outside edge of the window, they can also sit on other places such as, walls, porches, or front steps. This window box can be on the front steps to a home and the owners can entered their window boxes.
But safety first: People do get killed by falling window boxes. Make sure your window boxes are safe so they will not come down in a storm. If you feel your window box could be unsafe, you can have an indoor window box.
Light and water
Before you choose plants, check your window box location for light and rain. Window boxes dry out faster than in-ground plants, so they need more water. And if a window box is close to a wall or other structure, it may not get enough rainwater.
Even if all your windows get little sun, do not give up. You can get a great look using plants that love the shade. Many shade-loving plants like spiderworts and verbenas, have leaves in beautiful colors and interesting shapes.
The "wow" factor
What gives some window boxes their "wow" factor while others are just so-so? Create a theme! This is a central idea for the plants. For example, you may have a window box that is all cactuses or all edible plants. Or you could select only purple violets or green basil, then you'll have a color-themed window box.
Besides having a theme, upkeep is also important. You should cut off anything dead, water your window boxes often and change things a lot.
A new study has found that elephant seals have to work very hard to stay fat. It's the most complete study of the feeding behavior*of northern elephant seals.
Scientists paid special attention to the female* elephant seals during difficult two-month trips, in the northeastern Pacific Ocan. Researchers studied 48female elephant seals from Afo Nuevo State Park in California as they traveled large ocean distances. Their trip was around 6, 000 kilometers.
Scientists based their findings on data collected in 2011 and 2018. They used three small devices*.
One device, attached*under the jaw, counted the number of times the seals fed and measured their depth. A second satellite-linked device, attached to the head, followed the seals' ocean movements. The third device was a "smart" video camera and another depth sensor. It was also attached to the head.
The seals were found to spend about 20 hours every day - and sometimes a full 24 hours – in continuous deep-diving to feed on fish. They fed 1, 000 to 2, 000 times daily to stay fat, necessary for warmth in the cold waters. They eat huge amounts of small fish, but it is difficult for them to catch enough small fish to meet the energy needs of their large bodies.
Taiki Adachi of the University of St Andrews in Scotland led the study, said about the female elephant seals:
"They keep diving, for long periods of time, with only a few minutes breathing at the surface. "Adachi noted that the seals do not come back to land for their two-month trip. "According to our record of foraging, their time for sleeping is less than 20 percent of the day, "he added.
Northern elephant seals give birth in California and Baja California, usually on offshore islands, from December to March. During their mating season, they do not eat. During this period they lose about a third of their body weight.
I had my first chocolate bar at five years old. I'll never forget the delicious, comforting taste. It was World war I'll I lived with my family in the Lithuanian town of Taurage when the Russian armyswept west toward Nazi Germany.
A month later, I ran away from Taurage and took a train to Hamburg alone. 1 lived on the streets, like thousands of other children in the city. I survived by stealing food. Still, there was never enough.
Then the American army arrived. They looked so big and healthy. Stealing food from them was easy. I'd go into the mess hall quietly, hide under a table and leave with some fresh bread.
One afternoon as I waited around a mess tent secretly in search of food, a huge hand lifted me up by the collar. An American soldier. "Got you" He shouted.
I was scared, and I could see it upset him. "It's okay, kid," he said. He reached into his fatigue jacket and handed me a chocolate bar. "Here, have some of this." I unwrapped it and took a small bite. I thought I'd gone to heaven.
The soldier took me and some other homeless children to an orphanage run by the Red Cross. Four years later I was sent to an orphanage in Seattle, America. Soon after, I lived with an American family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Again, as with that first taste of chocolate, it was as if I'd gone to heaven. Later, I joined the Army, then attended college under the GI Bill. Finally I earned a master's degree in clinical social work. I want to pay back all the people who were so good to me.
In 1983 I went to work for the Department of Veteran Affairs as a clinical counselor, treating the troubled soldiers who suffer from wartime posttraumatic syndrome.
The troubled soldiers sit in my office and wonder how I can possibly understand them or help ease their pain. That is when I tell them my story, and about the soldier who saved my life.
"I never did learn his name, but I remember his kindness," I say. And then I open a drawer in my desk that is always full and offer them some chocolate.
a. He stayed in an orphanage in Seattle.
b. He worked for the troubled soldiers.
c. He attended college under the Gl Bill.
d. He lived with his family in the Lithuanian town.
