Over a thousand hectares(公顷)of farmland will be changed to wetland to help make the water clean at Baiyangdian Lake, North China's largest freshwater wetland.
Baiyangdian Lake, in the Xiong'an New Area of Hebei Province, is made up of 143 small lakes divided by wetlands and covering 366 square kilometers. It is known as the “kidney(肾)” of North China because it improves the environment.
Ge Zhanguo, a villager in Anxin county, is hoping conditions return to those of his childhood when he and his friends played in the water, swam or even caught fish in Baiyangdian.
He recently returned his 5,300 square meters of farmland to the local government to change it to wetlands, according to Hebei Daily.
Among many measures taken to reach the goal, the area launched(实行)a project in July to restore(恢复)two wetlands by changing the area's farmlands to wetlands. The project is expected to be finished next year.
There are two major rivers whose water runs into Baiyangdian, but a big part of its water was polluted by the factories in upstream areas, making them major sources of pollution. The restored wetlands can make lots of water clean each day and the quality of water coming into Baiyangdian will be greatly improved.
Next year, another 6,000 hectares of farmland will be restored to wetland at Baiyangdian. And many other projects are underway to restore the lake's environment.
The traditional Chinese lunar (农历) calendar divides the year into 24 parts. Rain Water starts on Feb18 - 20 and ends on Mar 4 - 6.
Rain Water means the increase in rainfall and rise in temperature. With its arrival, the river water starts to run, wild geese move from south to north, and trees and grass turn green again.
Here are three customs about Rain Water.
Visit grandparents. One of the main customs during Rain Water is husbands visiting their grandparents and giving gifts. According to the tradition, gifts are usually two cane (藤条) chairs, which is a symbol of good health and long life. Another typical gift is a pot of cooked dish, by which the husband expresses his respect and thanks.
Finding godfathers. Another old custom is to find a godfather for little kids. Rainfall brings vitality (活力) to the earth. So people in the past believed that this practice would give their kids healthy and safe growth.
The custom can be gone back to the health services of the past when many children's diseases could not be cured at all. So parents wanted a godfather to shower good luck on their children. This old practice was popular in Sichuan area.
Nutritious (营养的) porridge. The wet weather during Rain Water period is considered harmful to people's stomachs according to Chinese medical practice. So a bowl of nutritious porridge is the best choice to the body.
Have you ever seen black smoke out of factories, turning the sky a dirty gray? Cars, trucks, buses pollute the air too. Smoke from fires pollutes the air.
Land pollution, water pollution, and even noise pollution are also big problems. Both factories and common families may thoughtlessly dump(倾倒)rubbish and waste on land or in water. When farm chemicals(化学品)that help crops grow sink into the ground and water, they pollute too.
Ocean life isn't safe from pollution. Ships carrying oil sometimes have accidents that dump their oil into the ocean.
Dirty air, or smog, is hard to breathe and makes people and animals sick. Dirty water makes people and animals sick when they drink it or wash or live in it. It also kills plants. If land takes in too much waste, nothing will grow on it, and it becomes unfit to live on.
Most people find it hard to change the way they live, even if they want to. And governments and big factories find it even harder to change, since the changes are often unpopular or costly(代价高的).
Even small changes help, however. Reusing things instead of throwing them away helps. So does recycling. And perhaps the future will find people using cleaner forms of energy, such as wind power and solar energy.
A. This is air pollution.
B. Stopping pollution isn't easy.
C. Using less water each day helps.
D. Dirty air, water and land are dangerous.
E. Everyone must do something to reduce pollution.
F. You should stay at home to keep away from dirty air.
G. And noise pollution is created by loud machines and cars.

stop potato fill they get fall late boy many quick |
Sometimes people's words are not easily understood.
A man learned this lesson. He had been working late collecting and piling(堆)them high on his wagon(马车).
Towards the end of the day, his wagon was with potatoes. He decided to head home, for it was late. He wished to know how long it would take to get back to his village so that he could arrive before darkness .
He noticed a small boy along the roadside and to ask for directions.
"Young boy," he said, "it's and I must get home soon. How long will it take to get to my village from here?"
The boy answered, "If you go slowly, it will take only a short while for you to get home. But if you go , it will take a long time and you will not get there until late in the night.”
The man thought about the answer, but he could not understand it. He gave the boy an angry look and hit his horse to make it hurry. The horse began to run quickly. But soon, potatoes began to fall from the wagon. Each time, the man got off to collect the fallen potatoes and put back into his wagon.
The faster he went, the potatoes fell from his wagon, and the more time he had to spend stopping to pick them up. But, if he had travelled slowly, none of the potatoes would have fallen, and the man would have arrived home much earlier.
And so, as the young boy warned, go slowly and it will take only a short while.
There are places on Earth where stars are kept—not stars in the sky, but movie and pop stars. The US has the Hollywood Walk of Frame. Hong Kong has the Avenue of Stars.
The Republic of Korea has their own: K-Star Road! After the success of Psy, who became famous for his song Gangnam Style, the city of Seoul built a street to introduce the culture and tourism of the Republic of Korea to the world. Because it expects more tourists to come here for a visit. The street is decorated(装饰)with the handprints of famous people, as well as shows and special photo areas. While many countries have a hall of fame, Britain has something very different. Music fans from all over the world go to visit a zebra crossing near Abbey Road Studios, London. Doesn't that sound strange?
Well, it's not a normal crossing. It's a symbol of an enjoyable place for tourists! It was made famous by The Beatles. One of their album covers shows the band walking across the zebra crossing. So now everybody walks across the zebra crossing and gets their photo taken!
