When you have good friends, the best way to get to know them better is to have a sleepover(睡衣派对). A sleepover usually includes having a party and sleeping next to your good friends all night.
In the UK, friends have sleepovers very often. Some have them once every weekend or just once every month. When you want to have a sleepover with your friends, your parents can call or text your friends' parents to ask about a suitable date. Then, you have to arrange(安排) whose house you'll stay at — your own or your friends' house. The last step is to finish your homework before you get together with your friends so you can enjoy your time together.
But there is one problem: What if the parents don't want so many children to be in the house all day? Well, parents can find somewhere to take the children. It could be a park, a swimming pool, a theater or just somewhere down the road.
There are many fun games you can play with your friends at a sleepover. You can have a water fight in the garden. You can play hide-and-seek in the house. While you play, you can enjoy popcorn and candy. If you don't want to play games, you can just chat with your friends about whatever you want to share.
Preparing to go to Chinese university is tiring enough. But when studying abroad, you need to worry about things like new tests, essays, recommendations(推荐信), college choices and visa applications(签证申请).
The first thing you should do after picking the country you want to study in is to make a list of universities, including a dream school (a school you may not get into, but is at the top of your list), a safety school (a school you can definitely get into), and several schools in between. Look at the websites of those universities and you will get a complete list of everything you need for your applications.
The most important in any application will be your test scores, so pick a time as early as possible to take an exam preparation course.
If you are in a lecture hall with a teacher telling jokes, you are probably just wasting your time. As a reference point(参照标准), US students who attend top universities spend between 500 to 1,000 hours studying for the SAT, so probably you should do more.
You are also going to need to think about how to tell a story about yourself. Chinese students are well-known for being very hardworking, but also for sometimes short of creativity(创造力).
You need to show the university that you are excellent because of your own personality, not because your parents have forced you to be excellent.
Are you interested in sports? Make sure to play on your school's team. Universities want to see that you have interests of your own and can show initiative(主动性).
Finally, find an agent(代理人) to help you finish the application. You will need this help, but be as cautious as you can. Some agents will try their best to help students achieve their dreams but there are also ones who care more about the fees paid by students.
As the weather gets warmer, there are few things that are better to do than travel. But traveling might not be that fun for everyone, especially for those who have motion sickness(晕动症).
Motion sickness is also called travel sickness. It is a common experience for many people. Depending on how you travel, it can be called carsickness or seasickness. People with motion sickness feel very uncomfortable while they are in motion. They feel sick and dizzy(眩晕的), like the room around them won't stop turning.
It is generally believed that motion sickness happens when your senses become confused with each other, Scientific American reported.
We use different parts of our body to sense movement. Our eyes tell us if we are moving. The inner ears(内耳) contain a special liquid(液体)that helps us sense our direction and balance. Our muscles(肌肉)react to movement.
When you move around, these body parts work well together. But when you are in a car or an airplane, they get confused. Your inner ear gives off the information that you're moving, but your eyes say you're sitting still because you can't see that you're moving. This mismatch(不适配) gives us motion sickness.
But some people are less sensitive to motion sickness. This may be because they have certain genes(基因) that prevent mismatching senses, Bethann Hromatka, a genetics expert from the US, told the Atlantic.
Although there are many ways to deal with motion sickness, scientists believe that the key is to simply try to get used to it. For example, some astronauts do special exercises that give them mild(轻微的) motion sickness. After a week or two, the astronauts become used to it and don't feel uncomfortable anymore, Sam Puma, a NASA flight doctor, told the BBC.
We know our planet is getting warmer. The earth needs help. "What can I do?" you may ask and you may think you are just a kid. In fact, everyone can do something to help. What can you do?
Don't ask your parents to drive you somewhere when you could easily walk or ride your bike. The car is one of the biggest causes of the pollution. Getting more exercise is good for your body, too.
Recycling means reusing something old to make new things. Newspapers, old magazines, phone books and white paper can be recycled. Recycling a ton of paper can save seventeen trees. Visiting your town's recycling center. Learn the rules and start to recycle.
Buying used things is cheaper than buying new things. Sell or give away your used things and toys to those needed. They can use them again instead of buying the new ones. Reuse plastic or glass bottles instead of throwing them away in the trash. Reuse the plastic bags when shopping.
Turn off the water when you brush your teeth. Turn off lights, radios, TVs, computers, and other electrical things when you leave the room. When you don't use the computer, shut it down. It saves much electricity if you let it "sleep".
Don't buy single-use water bottles. Use a glass or plastic container(容器) that can be washed and reused. Use a lunch box or bag instead of paper bags to pack lunches for school or picnics.
What we do today affects our future generations. Let's take care of the earth!
A. Reuse things.
B. Save natural resources.
C. Try not to use anything just one time.
D. Stop riding in cars.
E. Recycle paper.
F. Use the car less often.
My father was born in a small town in the US. He wasn't 1 what he wanted to get from life, but something told him to get out and begin a new adventure(冒险).
He began that adventure traveling to cities in the US,2 going on to Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea and the Philippines. He 3 his wife and three daughters with him and went wherever the road took him.
It's easy to feel lonely when you're on the 4. As my mother said repeatedly, "We made lots of new friends on our trip—most of them were mechanics(机修工)", since we often spent hours in 5 shops. But that was better than sitting by the roadside while waiting for the engine(发动机) to cool when it was 40℃ outside.
Getting along well with each other sometimes 6 impossible. There were always a lot of arguments, especially among us backseat passengers about 7 had to sit in the middle.
But 8 it was hard at that time, we did learn a lot about forgiveness(谅解).
When we were traveling in the Philippines, we drove to Quezon City one day. It should have been a one-hour 9 but was nearly three, because of bad roads and worse traffic. "Did you put our suitcases(行李箱)in the car?" my father asked my mother as we arrived in Quezon City. From the back seat, we saw her slowly turn 10 my father. "No," she said. "I thought you did." That was 11 a seven-hour car trip turned into a 16-hour car trip, which was mostly spent in silence.
On occasions like that, we had to learn to 12 our anger because we were stuck(困在)in a rolling box with the same people for the rest of the journey. Even if I sometimes felt like opening the car door and pushing one of my sisters out, I kept my 13 to myself.
This is why road trips were like mobile universities to us. We earned our PHDs(博士学位)in how to 14 with other people just by traveling in that old car.
And if we were somehow given a second 15 at life, we would do it all over again. Only this time, I'd put the suitcases in the car myself.
British roads are the safest in the world — in 2010, only 3.8 people out of 100,000 died in road accidents. This number is (low) than that in any other country. If you go there, you should try to drive same way British people do. This is some advice for visitors plan to go driving in the UK.
Drive on the left side of the road. In most countries, people drive on the right side. Many visitors have problems they forget about this difference.
If there is a line of cars, don't try to go past other people (get) to the front. This is called "jumping the line". If you do this, other people will get angry you.
Stop at traffic lights. In the UK, drivers always stop when the light is red, if there aren't any cars or people around.
Don't use your horn(喇叭) too much. If you do, people (think) you are not polite. If another driver flashes(闪光) their lights at you, then they are (probable) trying to tell you that they will wait for you to go first.
If you have an accident, then don't try to bribe(贿赂) the (police)! If you do, you might finish your visit in prison(监狱).
