Three men were saved after writing "SOS". A helicopter(直升飞机)found their1on the beach. How did that happen?
The three men left Puluwat to have a trip in a small boat. On their way back home, they got2and their boat didn't work. They finally stopped at a completely3place.
With no food, the three could4look forward to being saved. They wrote "SOS" in5letters in the sand on the beach near their boat. SOS means "Help!"
Soon, people got the news that three men were lost at sea. And then the police began flying over the area,6them. Three days later, the men were found by a helicopter. The7said they were just ending their search and were about to leave because it was going to rain. "We looked down and saw an island, so we8to check it out and that was when we saw "SOS" and a boat near it on the beach." Two days later, the men got home9.
Though10messages in the sand may seem like something that only works in movies, it clearly works in real life, too.
I used to be a very self-centered person, but in the past two years I have really changed. I have started to think about other people1I think about myself. I am glad that I am becoming a2person.
I think my3started when I was at Palomar College. At first, I just wanted to finish my study and be left alone. I thought I was smarter than everyone else, so I4talk to others in my classes. By the end of my first term, I was really5. It seems as if everyone but me had made friends and was having fun. So I decided to ask people around me how they were doing and if they were having trouble I offered to help. That was really a big6for me. By the end of the year, I had several new friends, and two of them are still my best friends today.
A bigger cause of my new attitude (态度), however, came when I took a part-time job at a Nursing Home. One old lady there who had Alzheimer's disease (阿兹海默症) became my7. Every time I came into her room, she was so happy because she thought I was her daughter. Her real daughter never visited her, so I8. The old lady really let me9that making others feel good made me feel good too. When she died, I was heartbroken, but I was also grateful to her.
I think I am a much better person today than I used to be, and I hope I will not forget these experiences. They have10me to care about other people more than about myself. I like who I am today, and I could not say that a few years ago.

Leaflet for Field Trip Day
On Friday, June 25, our class will take a field trip to North Park Zoo. The Zoohas lions, elephants, and other interesting animals. Many of the animals we are studying will be there for us to watch closely.
Our class will be divided into six teams. Each team will have five students and one leader. The leaders are listed in the table below.
What You Need to Know
On the morning of the trip, the students will be divided into teams. One student from each team will receive a camera. The camera person will take pictures of the team, the animals, and other fun sights at the zoo.
All the students should wear blue shirts. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes because we will be walking all day. Please bring a bag lunch and a drink. We will have a picnic at the park inside the zoo. Bring a healthy snack, such as a piece of fruit and a drink, for later in the day.
When we are at the zoo, always stay with your team. Do not leave the team without telling the team leader.
Feeding the Animals
The ONLY animals that students are allowed to feed are those in the Children's Zoo. Special food can be bought at the zoo for 5 yuan and given to these animals. Do not feed your lunch to them. It is not good for the animals.
After leaving home and starting his first job, David stayed in touch with his mother.
David had just moved into his first apartment in the city, far from their village home. He thought that he should invite his mother to the city and show her around. He called her and made plans for her to come to the city on July 7th—a Tuesday.
July 7th came around and David went to the train station to pick up his mom. But she didn't show up. David called her and asked what was going on. She said, "Oh, I checked my calendar and it said July 7th was a Sunday! I'm sorry, dear. Can you come back to pick me up on Sunday?"
Of course, David didn't mind. However, he worried about his mom, who had always been good at remembering important dates. He asked, "Mom, how did you confuse(混淆)the date?"
"The thing is, I'm still using last year's calendar. I know it's silly, but it's the last thing your dad gave to me before he died. When the new year came, I didn't want to throw it away. I've missed a few appointments(约定), but I don't miss them almost as much as I miss your father."
I was filled with worries until my grandfather told me to stand tall.
For me, height (身高) was my trouble. I was much taller than other girls, so I often bent my body at the back of the line. I had always felt unsafe as the tallest student of my class in Bala Cynwyd. And I wasn't looking forward to entering the ninth grade.
My grandfather didn't laugh at me. Instead, whenever I tried to bend myself in order to appear shorter, he would tell me "Stand straight and tall, Alisa." And whenever I was afraid of something, he always told me stories of his life.
My grandfather grew up in war-torn (战乱的) Europe. "Stand straight, stand tall" meant something else then. After the war, he went to America. He lived a hard life. "If they could do it, why couldn't I?" "Stand straight, stand tall," he often reminded himself. Thanks to the help of a friend, my grandfather got a job. He once told me that he was very nervous at first. He was trying to learn not only this hard new job but also a new language.
"Stand straight, stand tall," he would always tell himself. I am so proud of my grandfather. After listening to my grandfather's unusual experiences, I have changed the way I look at my own life.
"Stand straight, stand tall" has become not only a piece of advice to improve my posture (身姿). It also tells me to be proud of who I am. And I do.
Last year, some groups of students in their community made a survey about "How do people spend their free time?" The following diagrams show some results of it:

Once there lived two pigeons(鸽子). They were husband and wife. They spent their time looking for food in the forest. One evening, the wife returned home early. As usual she was waiting for her husband to have dinner, when suddenly it started raining. She was worried.
Just then, she saw a bird-catcher(捕鸟人)coming towards her. In a cage(笼子)he had a pigeon. It was her husband.
Soon, it stopped raining, but the bird-catcher's clothes were wet. The poor wife sat by her husband's cage. And she started to cry. The husband said, "Don't feel sad, dear. We now have a guest. This man is cold and hungry. He needs your help." Hearing this, the wife flew around to get dry twigs(细枝). She made a fire for the bird-catcher. Then she looked at the bird-catcher and said, "You are our guest. Since I have no food to offer, I will jump into the fire. You can eat me."
The bird-catcher was overwhelmed by the hospitality of the humble pigeon. He stopped the wife from jumping into the fire. He opened the cage and set the husband free. The two pigeons were happy to be together.
A little boy always thought he was the unluckiest child in the world because he was kind of disabled. So he was quiet and hardly played with his classmates.
One spring, the boy's father gave each child a small tree to plant. The father said to the children, "I'll buy a gift for the child whose tree grows best." So every child tried their best.
Several days later, when the little boy went to see his tree, he was surprised to find his tree grew better than his brothers' and sisters'. His father kept his promise and said the boy would become an excellent botanist (植物学家) in the future. Since then, the little boy became confident (自信的).
One night, the little boy remembered the teacher once said that plants usually grow at night. Why not go to see the tree? When he went out, he found his father watering his tree. Suddenly, he knew his father helped him take care of his tree!
Years passed. The little boy didn't become a botanist, but he became the president (总统) of the United States. His name is Franklin Roosevelt.
