Nowadays there'8 less and less contact between the old and the young. There're mainly four 1 for this, including the breakdown of the big family, working parents with little time to take care of their children, families that have moved away, and smaller flats(公寓)with2room for grandparents. But the results are the same. More old people are lonely and feel useless, and more and more3with young children need more love and care. It's a big problem in many countries. Now inter-generational(两代间的) programmes, designed to bring the old and the young together, 4growing popular all over the world. There're successful examples of such programmers. There're schemes(方案) which involve older people visiting families who're having5, maybe6the children for a while to give the tired mother a break; or "adopt (领养) a grandparent" schemes in which children write letters or visit a7old person in their area. One successful scheme in London pairs young volunteers with old people who're losing their sight(看不见). The young people8. with practical things such as reading newspapers, reading bank statements(对账单)or helping with shopping, and the older people can pass on9 knowledge and experience to their young visitors. For example, a retired judge may be paired with a teenager who wants to study law. If older people can understand and accept the youth of today, and so do the youth, there will be10conflict(矛盾)in the world.
In Britain you're allowed to drive a car when you are seventeen. You have to get a special two year driving license before you can start. When you are learning, someone with a full license always has to be in the car with you because you aren't allowed to drive the car on the road alone. You don't have to go to a driving school- a friend can teach you. The person with you isn't allowed to take money for the lessons unless he's got a teacher's license. Before you are allowed to have a full license, you have to take a driving test. You can take a test in your own car, but it has to be fit for the road. In the test you have to drive round for about half an hour and then answer a few questions. If you don't pass the test, you're allowed to take it again a few weeks later if you want to. In 1970 a woman passed her fortieth test after 212 driving lessons! When you have passed your test, you don't have to take it again, and you are allowed to go on driving as long as you like, if you are healthy. Britain's oldest driver was a man who drove in 1974 at the age of 100. Before 1904 everyone was allowed to drive, even children. Then from 1904 car drivers had to have a license. But they didn't have to take a test until 1935. In the early days of car driving, before 1878, cars weren't allowed to go faster than four miles an hour, and someone had to lead a car with a red flag.
Liu Wei is very famous in China because he can play the piano with his feet. One day when Liu Wei was only 10 years old, he played a game with some friends. He lost both his arms because of electricity.
Liu Wei was very sad when both his arms were cut off after the accident. But soon he had to make a choice. "For people like me, there were only two choices. One was to give up all the dreams, which would cause a quick death. The other was to work hard without arms to live an excellent life. "says Liu Wei. Liu's dream was to be a pianist, His excellent life included a show on China's Got Talent and a wonderful performance playing the beautiful Marriage D'amour with his two feet on the piano. Liu Wei learned to play the piano with his feet. And teaching himself to play the piano with his feet was very hard. Many times he wanted to give up, but his parents went on encouraging him and he wanted to make his parents proud.
Maybe you cannot believe that Liu Wei is able to play well only with his toes. The audience were deeply moved and very excited when they watched his performance.
More and more Chinese would like to travel to the USA and prefer to drive by themselves. They need to know something about driving in America, which will be helpful to them and bring a happy holiday to them.
Keep Right
The traffic follows the "keep right rule". While driving, drive on the right side of the road, which is completely different from that in Britain. On one way, multiple lanes(车道) road, the right- most lane would be slowest and left- most lane is fastest.
Hand Signals
Though indicators(指示灯) are used for the purpose of showing which direction you are going, knowing some hand signals is very important and they are always asked in a driving test. When you want to turn right, you can put your left hand out of the window and point upward. When you want to make a left turn, you can reach your left arm out of the window and point to the left. If you want to slow down or stop, you can just point downward.
School Buses
Yellow school buses have flashing red lights and stop signs that reach out from the driver's side. The drivers use these warning signals when letting pupils on and off. No matter which side of the road you are traveling on, if you come upon(偶遇) a school bus with its lights flashing and a stop sign used, you must stop. It's the law. Remain stopped until the lights stop flashing or the stop sign is removed.
Using the Horn
Using horns is not common in America. Actually they are very rarely used. You may use your horn to warn walkers or other drivers of possible trouble or to avoid accidents. Do not use your horn to express anger or complain about other drivers' mistakes or to try to get a slow driver to move faster.
People can often see beggars (乞讨者) sit by the side of a street with heads low as they pass by. Some ask people passing by for a small amount of money and some just sit and wait to be given money.
To solve the problem of aggressive(有攻击性的) begging, an alternative(供选择的) giving plan has been suggested, Ten blue money boxes will be placed in busy places with the encouragement people to give the money to the local charity for the homeless.
But the police are against the plan arguing that beggars who do not receive money may turn to criminals. The homeless charity believes the success of any plan will depend on its style. They think that imaginative and positive plans can help create local understanding and kindness instead of hardness. Most of the beggars dislike the plan because they think they will not get enough money from the boxes for their showers, food and clothes.
Governments must play a big role in solving this problem, Training beggars to work and helping them to find proper jobs are especially true for developing countries where many low- skill jobs are offered. The general community should also be educated to see beggars not as dirty and dangerous, but as people who need understanding and help.
A. It's not safe to give money directly to beggars.
B. People can give money directly to beggars.
C. Begging is a big social problem in all the countries.
D. A few use aggressive behavior to make money.
E. Those who support this plan think it will not be a good way.
F. Begging problem.
G. Those who support this plan think it will be a good way.
We live in a small town and almost everyone knows each other. It used to be very quiet. Nothing much ever happened around here.
However, these days, something (usual) is happening in our town. Victor, a teacher at my school, is (real) nervous. When he (interview) by the town newspaper, he said, "Every night we hear strange (noise) outside our window. My wife thinks that it could be an animal, but my friends and I think it must be teenagers having fun. My parents called the policemen, but they (can) find anything strange. They think it might be the wind. I don't think so!"
(Victor) next door neighbor Helen is worried, too. "At (one), I thought that it might be a dog, but 1 couldn't see a dog, or anything else, either. So I guess in can't be a dog. But then, what could it be?" One woman in the area saw something running away, but it was dark so she is not sure. "I think it was too big(be) a dog," she said, "Maybe it was a bear or a wolf. "Everyone in our town is feeling uneasy, and everyone has (they) own ideas.
There must be something(visit) the homes in our neighborhood, but what is it? We have no idea. Most people hope that this animal or person will simply go away, but I don't think that is going to happen. The noise maker is having too much fun creating fear in the neighborhood,
