Let's face it. No one drinks diet sodas for the taste. People drink diet sodas in the hope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it. Yet it seems to have exactly the opposite effect, according to a new study.
Researchers from the University of Texas said those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist size increases that were six times greater than those who didn't drink diet sodas. "What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drank, the more weight they were likely to gain," said Sharon Fowler.
The study was based on data from 474 participants in a large, ongoing research project, where the participants were followed for nearly 10 years.
While the findings are surprising, they also offer some explanations. Nutrition expert, Melanie Rogers, who works with overweight patients in New York, has found that when patients are switched from regular to diet sodas, they don't lose weight at all. "We weren't seeing weight loss necessarily, and that was confusing to us", said Rogers.
So why would diet soda cause weight gain? No one knows for sure yet, but it could be that people think they can eat more if they drink diet sodas, and so over-compensate for the missing calories.
A related study found some sweeteners (甜味剂) raised blood sugar levels in some mice. "Data from this and other potential studies suggest that the promotion of diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may be risky, said Helen P. Hazuda, professor at the University of Texas's school of medicine. "They may be free of calories, but not of consequences."
As part of a health initiative, Berkeley is getting ready to become the first city in the US to require large grocery stores to stop allowing the sales of junk food and candy in checkout aisles(过道). The new rule is expected to go into effect in March 2021.
The "Healthy Checkout Ordinance(法规)" was approved by Berkeley's City Council. It requires stores over 2,500 square-feet in size to sell at least 25 square-feet of healthy items within a three-foot radius(半径) of checkout registers. So now instead of candy and soda and other high calorie items, shoppers can expect to see fresh fruit and whole grain alternatives at checkout counters.
"Placement of unhealthy snacks near a register increases the likelihood that customers will purchase these foods and drinks when willpower is weak at the end of a long shopping trip," City Council member Kate Harrison said. The new rule will affect at least 25 retailers(零售商)in Berkeley. These include Whole Foods, CVS, Walgreens and Safeway.
"It's not a ban: it's a nudge(推动)," Harrison said. "Stores can still sell candy and soda, just not at your child's eye level in the checkout." The council said the shift to selling more healthy products at checkouts will still be profitable for stores because data shows customers are looking for more low sugar and low sodium products anyway. They also said retailers in test cases around the country and in California have seen dramatic increases in sales of healthy foods since they changed their checkouts to include more fresh options in displays.
The ordinance will make grocery stores a "more neutral and health-friendly space for consumers," said Ashley Hickson, senior policy associate at the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). Junk food makers spend a lot to make sure their products are front and center in stores, Hickson said, but some consumers don't like the practice. In a CSPI survey, 76% of shoppers who bought unhealthy food or drink at checkout regretted the purchase, she added.
Despite earning more than $ 100,000 in household income, many people feel that they are living month to month and that a loss of employment or sudden medical emergency could easily move them from the upper middle class to low income earners. This feeling of being on the "edge" of poverty, despite these levels of income, seems a bit ridiculous but it really comes down to easy credit, misunderstanding of their incomes and peer group pressures.
Even in today's tough economy, for those with six-figure incomes credit is easy to come by. Credit companies may have cut back offerings to those in lower income brackets due to the recent credit reforms, but there seems to be little or no effect on high income earners. Their being able to get credit without difficulty gives them a false sense of security that makes them spend way more than their incomes can afford. That's why they accumulate credit card debt faster than average.
Many higher income earners feel like they are making lots of money now, and believe that they will continue to make big money. This may reduce their feeling that they need to watch their money carefully now. Hand in hand with that, many of them probably believe that they are making more money than they really are — or said another way, the money they make will go farther than it really does.
Meanwhile, many young professionals who are earning good incomes don't come from particularly privileged backgrounds, and their reference point may be that they are making twice (or more) than their parents were — so they spend like that as well. They don't take account of the effect of inflation, which means that the cost of living is much higher than that in their parents' generation. Further, the more you earn, the more you pay in tax. Rather than focusing on after-tax incomes, many high income earners only look at the top line figures. A $ 100,000 income before tax is only about $ 70,000 after tax.
How to Love Your Parents
Even if you think that your parents are mean-spirited at times, loving your parents is a normal and fulfilling part of life. You love them for the fact that they created you, raised you, and are in part, a source of who you are. .
A gentle "good morning" and "I love you" will warm a coldest heart. Remember that they brought you into this world. Without your parents, we might still wander at an unknown corner in an unknown world.
Respect them more and cherish these moments. You can use these moments to learn from them when you're off on your own. It's OK to get angry but angry actions don't help you or your parents. Act calmly, cool off, write down your feelings, or talk to a friend. .
Obey their requests. It will make your attitude better and earn you more respect from them. It may seem like you are going through hell when you don't get what you want or you have to clean. However, you had better remember they keep a roof over your head when it's cold, raining, snowing, or too hot. Understand that parents are human beings and make mistakes. Since you can forgive your friends, why not forgive your parents?
Keep company with them. Do things with your parents like watching TV, or go somewhere with them. Listen to their old stories and learn from them. You will find they are your teachers in this way or another.
Some people simply may not be able to love their parents. Seek help if you are being abused in any way. Parents do not have a right to harm you.

While I was painting in the studio, an insect kept (hit) against the window, trying to get back outdoors. I felt just brief moment of concern and pity because I imagined its sense of fear. I kept a door open nearby so that it (give) a chance to get free.
Hours later I learned it was a honeybee. It (fly) right towards me, and then landed on the front of my shirt!
(amazing), my first reaction was not fear, but rather care and concerns. It seemed (tire) because it had made efforts (get) to its way out. Together we made our way outside, where it took flight to the sky, most probably back home. A feeling of joy for its freedom came up.
It was lucky love came first. It could so easily have been otherwise. I felt grateful that I did not fight back in panic or fear or try to cause harm to it. It reminded me of my teachers. I couldn't help saying (thank) to my teachers for their working day night like bees and showing me all possible risks.
"I've lost my home. The home I bought, treasured, loved."
It now stands 1. The bare picture windows stare out like hollow (中空的) eyes. The flowers I planted and watered become 2, hanging low as if weeping. Putty (油灰) and paint cover the holes in the walls where pictures 3 hung.
Even though the house is empty, images 4 my mind of a time when it was filled with life.
On the driveway, we 5 our son how to ride a bike. In this house 6 both kids learned to read and write, we taught our son to tie his shoes, and for several terrible months 7 our daughter's toilet-training.
8 it was our first home, we set right to decorate, make it our own. My arm 9 aches from painting my son's bedroom wall a bright blue that needed three coats 10 it stopped appearing streaky (有纹理的). I remember the 11 to paint my daughter's room pink that never came true.
Many injuries accumulated (累积) over the years. There's the 12 my daughter tried to climb on top of her dresser and it fell over on her. 13, she wasn't badly hurt. Or the time my son fell off his bike and scraped his knees.
I remember the 14 about having a master bedroom with our own bathroom and walk-in closet. Many fond 15 are associated with the room I shared with my family. The room we talked in, embraced in, laughed in.
My heart hurts 16 we drive away from the house, 17 it in the dust like nothing more than a distant memory.
Behind me my kids' chatter fills the back seat. My husband at my side threads his fingers through mine. It's then 18 I realize I haven't truly lost my home. My home is not a structure 19 four walls and a roof. It's not something that can be bought or sold. My home is not the place I live. It's the people I live with. The people 20 here in this car.
My family is my home.
