My grandfather was a house painter whose job is painting buildings, walls, etc. In his lifetime, he must have1hundreds of houses inside and outside. He was a happy, outgoing man who made friends easily while working. It wasn't hard to tell that he loved his2 as well as his life.
Once, when I was in college, I helped my grandpa paint a house. While working inside, I noticed he was very skilled at giving a wall a quality coat of paint so3. In fact, while he was painting, he could have a(n)4with the homeowner, laughing all the time.
At one point, he stopped to watch me. He noticed5I dipped (浸; 蘸)the brush into the paint bucket (桶) and how I carefully wiped (擦) off both sides of the brush as I pulled it out so not to 6 any paint. Then without spilling (泼洒)a drop, I7 the thin coat of paint on the wall. It was a slow and8 process, but I dared (敢) not laugh or have a kidding for fear of making a mess.
Finally, he gave me some9. "Eric, watch this," he said, as he took the brush from my hand and dipped it into the bucket. "See, this is how you do it. Don't 10 spills or a mess. That's not a big problem because 11 can always be cleaned up. Treat a wall the way you treat people. Be generous (慷慨的) and have fun. 12 put enough paint on the brush. "
Yes, he did spill a few drops, 13 I noticed his wall looked much better than mine. I also noticed he was having great fun.
Life is not always 14. Some days, we spill few drops; some days, we spill a lot. The only thing that really 15is what the wall looks like when we are done and how much fun we have painting it.
One Saturday morning, Detective Carey was called in to solve a case. Mr Smith had mysteriously (神秘的)disappeared from his one-story home, according to Carey's partner Detective Green.
"Everything is set (安排好的). Mrs Smith will be expecting you in half an hour at 232 Parker Road," Green told Carey inthe phone call.
Carey got there quickly. She got out of her car and walked up to the house. Mrs Smith brought her inside right away. "Detective, I'm so glad you came. The last place I saw my husband was in his room. I thought that might be the first thing you would ask me," Mrs Smith said.
She walked Carey into the other room. "Up here," Mrs Smith called from the stairs. The front door banged (砰地关上) shut just as Carey started up the steps. "Oh, I must have left the door open. The wind must have shut it," Mrs Smith said. Again they started up the stairs.
Half way up, Carey looked through a window and saw a weathervane (风向标). She noticed that the wind was blowing west. But in order for the wind to shut the door, it would have to be blowing east. Suddenly, she heard loud footsteps on the stairs.
She realized she had walked into a trap(陷阱).
Do you enjoy listening to music? What kind of music do you love? Researchers at the University of Westminster have looked at 80 guests on the BBC radio show Desert Island Discs(《荒岛唱片》). The show invites celebrities like well-known actors and film stars to choose eight songs that they would take with them to a desert island. There are no people living on it.
The researchers found that half of the songs that were chosen were linked to important memories from when the show's guests were between the ages of 10 and 30. Catherine Loveday, who led the study, and other researchers call this time the "self-defining (自我定义)period", as they think it is when people develop their sense of self.
The study found that the most common reason (17%) guests had for choosing a song was that it reminded them of someone like a parent, partner or friend. The second most common reason(16. 2%) was that the song was connected to a period of time. The third most popular reason (12. 9%) was the song's connection to life-changing moments, like finding a partner or going to college.
Loveday said the songs people listen to when they are between 10 and 30 also often influence their taste in music for years to come.
The researchers are now working on a new study that lets people create and share their own Desert Island Discs experience. Through an online survey, people are asked to choose eight songs, a book, and one luxury(奢侈品)that they would take with them to a desert island.
"If you are not fat, you must be a thin man." "For every minute of breathing, 60 seconds pass." "Why do you say I am lazy? Obviously, I didn't do anything. "
Nonsense? Yes. These sentences look like they make sense, but they actually express little useful information. They are part of a recent Internet sentence-making craze called "nonsense literature(文学)".
"Nonsense literature" was originally invented by Internet users to make fun of the empty, fussy (过分讲究的)and redundant (累赘的)writing style often used by media and some famous people. Like any good Internet joke, it became a popular word game. Plenty of "nonsense" has been created. "Every time I don't know what to say." "Listening to your words is like listening to words."
Some even said that famous writers like Lu Xun used the style. For example, they said, Lu Xun once wrote: There are two trees in my backyard. One is a jujube (枣) tree, and the other is also a jujube tree.
Is it true? Not really. Repetition in writing is not necessarily "nonsense literature". Lu Xun's writing on the jujube trees comes from a piece of his articles. If you have read it, as well as understanding his time of writing, you'd find these repeated lines are powerful, showing that the writer was frustrated (挫败)by social reality.
Actually, "nonsense" and "literature" are two incompatible (矛盾的)words. Nonsense is silly and useless. It will soon be forgotten. But literature is written work considered to have artistic value. It is a spiritual treasure worth passing down.
Internet crazes like "nonsense literature" might make you laugh for a while. Don't throw___▲___ yourself into it. Read some real literature. It will help us stop talking nonsense.

As we all know, travelling has become a popular way for people to(度过)holidays.
However, it seems that many people have forgotten the meaning of travelling.
In the past, we went(某个地方)to learn about the history or the culture. We couldn't help feeling excited and(骄傲的). We used our "eye camera" to record the amazing moments or scenes.
Things have(变化) now. These days, you can see lots of people travelling in the holidays. However, many of them are more interested in playing on their smartphones (比) looking at the scene. Maybe these people don't like the places they have chosen at all. They just don't(在意).
So ask yourself: What is your (目的) when you go to visit a place? Is it to enjoy the scenery, or to play on your smartphone and take pictures? Isn't travelling (在.……期间)the holidays a good chance for us to enjoy some time with our families while learning the(当地的)customs and culture?

There are many steps in making a bottle of water and through the process many natural resources are used. Transportation also uses petrol(汽油)and releases (释放)a lot of CO2 into the air, which makes air pollution.
First, the oil is taken out from the earth. Then the oil is cleaned at the refinery(炼油厂). At a plastic factory the oil is made into plastic pellets (塑料颗粒) and then bottle preforms (粗加工的成品).
Preforms are heated and shaped into bottles. The bottles are brought to the bottling factory where they are filled with water. The bottles are ready and they are transported to the stores.
Bottles of water are sold and brought to thousands of families. Most of the plastic bottles are thrown away and end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场) or in the environment.
The plastic bottles need 400 to 1000 years to break down. Some are recycled and brought to a factory that turns them into other plastic items (物品). Finally, those items are thrown away and end up in the landfill.
