Judy Wright and her husband decided to move closer to their son, Chris, who lived in Georgia. About a month after the move, Judy fell ill, suffering from her ongoing battle against Parkinson's disease.
Her condition worsened rapidly and she required medical care at home. The family hired a nursing aid who canceled at the last minute. Instead, a woman named TunDe Hector showed up in her place.
One day, TunDe shared a story with Judy and her family. She remembered a particularly difficult day in 2017, when a stranger had helped her with a kind gesture. She had run out of gas, and with only $5. in her pocket, was walking to a gas station, gas can in her hand. A man saw her walking and turned his car around. He paid for her gas and gave her all the cash left in his wallet. Upon hearing the story, Judy's son, Chris, took off his hat and said, "That was me!" He was the stranger that had helped TunDe on that difficult day.
During the care of Judy, the Wright family learned about TunDe's family and her own dream. The nursing aid, TunDe hoped that one day she could become an OB-GYN nurse. Her tuition was past due(逾期)and she had a family to care for, but she was determined to achieve that goal for herself and her family.
Judy died on July 9, 2018. Instead of flowers, her family asked mourners(悼念者)to donate to TunDe's education, to assist her in paying for her nursing school. In less than a week, they raised more than $8, 000 and presented her with the surprise check.
Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your choice of sport might have great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses(球场)in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in so me local areas.
There are many environment friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don't need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don't have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be "green gyms". They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it's free.
Do cell phones cause cancer? No one knows for sure. Mobile phones have only been widely used for around 30 years, with the very first ones introduced just over 40 years ago. It's too soon to tell just how harmful cell phones are.
In February 2017, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association recorded changes in brain glucose metabolism(葡萄糖代谢)during cell phone use. The study became the first to prove that cell phone use changes brain activity by monitoring 47 healthy volunteers seated and on the phone for 50 minutes. The volunteers' brains were monitored by special scanners to measure glucose metabolism.
Then in May 2017, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)added radiation from cell phones to its list of substances that possibly cause cancer in humans. The IARC'S research found that most cell phone use did not lead to more risk of glioma, a dangerous type of brain cancer, or meningioma, a more common, but typically not harmful cancer. However, the study did find enough evidence that using cell phones for long periods of time on the same side of the head could mean an increased risk of glioma.
In a contrasting report released in July 2017, a British Institute of Cancer Research study found little evidence of cancer risk in 10 to 15 years of use. The study showed that there have been no increases in brain tumors(肿瘤)in several countries over the last 30 years since cell phones were introduced or even in the last 20 years since their use became more widespread.
With no long-term research available yet, limiting exposure to cell phone radiation by texting more and talking less is recommended. Stay off the phone when you have a weak signal, as it will need more radiation to contact the tower. Phone use for children should also be limited because their brains absort twice as much cell phone radiation.
How to get pumped(满腔热情的)after working hours?
After a long workday, all you want to do is go home, sit on the couch and turn on the TV. So you've planned to go to the gym after work?" I'll go tomorrow, I promise. " Here are some tips for getting yourself to hit the gym after a tiresome workday, offered by Women's Health magazine:
Why not change the "Keep calm and carry on" poster to some inspirational shape-up messages around your workplace? If you think "No pains, no gains. " is too ordinary, how about "And though she be but little, she is fierce"? When your colleagues ask about it, tell them the quote is from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Eat breakfast.
Even though it's hours before your trip to the gym, having a balanced breakfast will keep you energized throughout the rest of the day.
Eat a little lunch.
No matter what you're eating, if you have too much of it, your blood sugar is going to rise sharply and then drop rapidly. Try to avoid foods with refined carbohydrates or lots of sugar. Keeping your blood sugar steady will stabilize your energy, help you get more done, and feel awake enough to make it to the gym.
Set the bar really low.
And once you're at the gym, you might think: "Well, I could probably stay just a little longer." Also remember, some HIIT(high-intensity interval training)workouts are short but very effective. Just search for HIIT workouts online and you can find loads to teach yourself.
A. Take advantage of tech. B. This will leave you sleepy and unproductive. C. But of course, tomorrow will be exactly the same. D. This will guarantee that you won't "forget" to go to workout. E. Decorate your office space with motivational photos or slogans. F. Try to include eggs, fruits and whole-grain bread in your breakfast. G. If you make your goal really easy, you will be willing to achieve it. |
One day I was driving to the marsh(湿地)for bird-watching. The weather forecast called for the possibility of fog. As I1the destination, the fog began to2. At a turning point, I lost3of the car and ran into the wet land.
I tried to open the door, but it was locked as the water had4the electrical system. I remembered I had a fire extinguisher(灭火器). I5it and gave the window a.6hit. It merely bounced off. I hit it again, with the7result.
The water level had risen. and soon I was swinging(挥动)the extinguisher underwater. I had to8for air and down to take as many9as my breath would allow. I was nearly10. A part of me just wanted to give up. But then another thought came to mind, "You have11more time. What will you do with it?" "I'm going to try12," I responded.
I13swinging the fire extinguisher as hard as I could and suddenly the impact felt different. I14my left hand and felt a hole in the15. I. knew I was going to live.
Artificial intelligence, also known as machine intelligence, is branch of computer science that aims (create)intelligent machines. It is the development of computers since the 1940s that has made the dream of AI n reality. Since the field of AI was(official)founded in the mid-1950s, people have been predicting the rise of intelligence machines.
However, AI technology developed very slowly for a long time. Not until 1997, Deep Blue defeated the world chess champion, did AI make a major breakthrough. In 2017, KeJie, arguably the best human Go player, (beat)by a computer program named AlphaGo, marking a significant advance in deep-learning AI systems.
AI is currently being applied in many fields, (transform)the way we live. Apparently, we are at a turning point in history. Although intelligent robots will be working to (us)advantage someday in the future, these undoubted benefits also bring concerns and fears. Where will all this lead? Will we fall victim AI? Stephen Hawking warned, "The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race." Such (warning)deserve our attention. Indeed, it is fantastic to allow a robot to do all the work for us, we shouldn't be too greedy and rather be careful what we wish for.

An eyesight test was held by our school recently.
Dad and Madison were walking through the party store, gathering decorations for Madison's upcoming birthday party.
"But I don't want to invite Lucy Gilbert! I don't like her!"
"Madison, you are being unreasonable. If every girl in your class is invited to party but you, you'll feel left out. It would be a big mistake to not invite Lucy to the party. ""She never even talks to me!"
Dud sighed and moved down the aisle(走廊). "Lucy is a new girl in class. She just moved here a little over a month ago. Think about how that must feel. She doesn't know one single person in the school. She left all of her old friends behind and now she has to try to make new friends. Your party will be a great chance for her to get to know everyone. "
"No, it won't. She will probably sit in the corner and not talk to anyone. Every day at lunch she sits all by herself. She wants to eat alone!" Madison shrugged and rolled her eyes.
"Madison, I'm done discussing this. You will invite every girl in your class. Including Lucy Gilbert!"
On Saturday morning, the family blew up balloons and decorated the house cheerfully. Madison was dressed beautifully for the day, wearing her new blue dress. It was not typical of her to dress herself like this. She usually wore sports clothes because she loved to be outside riding her horse Star with a lead rope(缰绳).
Madison greeted her friends at the doorstep, picturing various presents her friends would bring her. In the meanwhile, she was wondering whether Lucy would ruin the party if she came. Anyhow, all the girls she invited came finally, including Lucy.
The girls had a fantastic time by singing and dancing while Lucy sat in the corner silently alone. Later, all the girls gathered around the table as Madison opened her presents. Opening them one by one, Madison thanked her friends, with a bright smile on her face.
Paragraph 1: Lucy's present was the very last to be opened.
Paragraph 2: Deeply moved by what she said, Madison held the lead rope tightly in her hands.
