A 99-year-old woman and a high school student in British Columbia have formed a wonderful friendship through a program that connects seniors with young people.
Myrtle MacDonald, 99, says she signed up for the local program after feeling lonely because her daughter and son couldn't keep her company. She was paired (结对子) with Jaelyn Brown, 17, based on their common interest -- nursing. "I just found her more interested and less in a hurry than I expected. It has filled an empty spot," said MacDonald.
For the high school students taking part, the time spent with seniors can be used toward volunteer hours needed for graduation. They're supposed to speak for 30 minutes each week, but many go far beyond that. "I love and look forward to getting to talk to her every week. We talk about an hour and 15 minutes, and the time just goes by so quickly," said Brown.
MacDonald, a former nurse, spent much of her life teaching and living in other parts of the world helping people in need. The stories are inspiring to Brown, who also wants to become a nurse. "In high school they kind of say you go to school, you get a job, you have kids. It's a regular practice but talking to her has made me realize I don't have to limit myself to one thing. I can have it all," she said.
The program has been a good fortune to both seniors and high school students. Due to various reasons, seniors can't meet with their families and students are having trouble getting their volunteer hours. "Therefore, there's been a huge positive response from them," said the program's organizer Connie Stam.
Group buying websites are getting popular in China since people like to spend their money more wisely. Thus it is not surprising to see that the number of such websites is growing. However, consumers (消费者) are facing a problem — too much information. They have to surf many sites to know about the best offer. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a single place that combined (组合)all the information and presented it to the users so that they could easily make a better shopping decision? Ronald Li recognized this was a good business opportunity and he started to do some research. Ronald Li found that there was no such app in the market at that time. He decided to develop one himself.
Ronald Li knew that he had to step up the speed. The market is all about offering the right solution at the right time. He had to learn from other sites so as to develop one that provided great user experience. He had to put himself in the buyer's shoes so as to know what they want. The process was not without difficulties. The most challenging one was the automatic(自动的) system that is required to actively search the information from the various group buying sites. Besides, Ronald Li was aware that some other people were starting to work on it. Eventually, he spent about two weeks on the development and had it done.
The app was then presented to Apple. It took a few days to get approved (获准). The app finally came into the market on 18 February. On 24 February, it reached the number one position in the list of Top Three iPhone Apps. In just three days, it has achieved over 30 thousand downloads.
Learning other languages, you discover how to say the same thing in many different ways. In English we say "goodnight". In Russia, people say "ΠoЗДpаΒЛеНИе". In Vietnamese, people say "chúc ngú ngon", which means "have a delicious sleep". When I think about the word "delicious, I think of pizza, chocolate and ice-cream. I don't think about going to sleep. So depending on the language, different phrases will improve your creativity and force you to think about how to say things in a different way.
Studying a new language, you will notice that you have to learn a new sense of humor that comes along with the culture of that language. Sometimes jokes that work in English won't work in French or Japanese. But sometimes things that nobody would laugh at in English work in Vietnamese. I learned this when I performed the stand-up comedy in Vietnam. A lot of my non-Vietnamese speaking friends would ask me to translate the jokes for them, but when I translated it back into English, no one laughed.
When you learn a new language, you have to learn a lot of vocabulary, new grammar, idioms and much more besides. Doing this, you have to learn memory skills. These could be flash cards, using recall methods, or building a memory palace. Whatever tactic you use, it will strengthen your creativity.
Next time you meet someone who speaks several languages, before you think that they have something special going on in their brain, take a step back and think. Maybe they do. But maybe they've got that special thing because they've made the effort to learn several languages. An effort is something we all need.
During my first year teaching middle school students, I found myself in a bit of a dilemma (进退两难). When the bell rang, I knew that my class should be orderly and on task. I had an activity on the board for the students to complete. However, no one did it. Instead, they just kept chatting and laughing.
I desperately needed some classroom management strategies that actually worked.
She gave me the following idea: When the bell rings, write down the names of everyone who is talking on the board, and tell them if they speak out of turn again they will receive a discipline (纪律) essay.
I tried it. Wow, it worked! Firstly, watch carefully for the very first person that talks and be sure to give him a warning in the form of his name on the board. Meanwhile, say something like, "Taylor, this is just a warning to you. You are not in trouble at this point, but you will be if you continue talking."
There would still be days when the bell rang and half the class were still talking, but instead of allowing my stress level to rise, I would calmly start writing names. It normally only took three or four names for the class to notice. Then they would quickly quiet down.
If you teach high school, or are just not crazy about this method, look for ways to adjust it. For example, you could give a student a warning by putting a Post-it (便利贴) on their desk.
But if you've had trouble keeping order in your classroom, I do highly recommend that you try it.
A. But it simply wasn't. B. Now let me make an introduction. C. Eventually, I went to an old teacher. D. Therefore, I referred to some relevant books. E. And I felt like a failure in my own classroom. F. Writing names down may not be a good fit for everyone. G. This method made the biggest difference at the start of class. |

I experienced the Naadam Festival in China's Inner Mongolia in this year. Naadam meant "games" in Mongolian. It's represented by three events: horse racing, wrestling or archery, which are all so exciting to watch. Before the game, the competitors sang and danced happily, waved their arms. After these amazing performance, the wrestling competition began.
I absolute enjoyed the horse races. However, I was surprised that the riders was children of the same age with me. In beginning, I was worried about their safety, but the locals said they enjoyed them by riding horses all the life. At that moment I started to understand what people say "Horses are at the heart of Mongolian culture."
