Many years ago, the Pandetti family lived in the mountains. Grandpa Pandetti traveled into the village to trade his goods.
While he was there, he looked for a special gift for his family. After a long search, he found a lovely mirror. Grandpa Pandetti bought the mirror and hurried home to his family.
It was late when Grandpa arrived home. He hung the mirror on the wall and then fell asleep quickly. Early in the morning, little Paul Pandetti woke up. As he walked into the room, he saw a young boy looking back at him. "Papa, Papa, someone has broken into our house. " Paul cried. Papa hurried down. He quickly looked at the mirror and saw a strong man looking back at him. He stared at the man. The man stared back soon. He hit the table hard and watched as the man hit hard on the table, too.
Mama Pandetti came into the room. She stopped in her way when she saw a young woman looking at her. Mama Pandetti smiled and waved at the woman. The woman also smiled and waved back at Mama.
Papa watched her with curiosity (好奇心) and then stepped up to the mirror with a smile. The strong man appeared once again in the mirror, but this time he wore a smile on his face.
From that day on, the Pandetti family smiled as they walked through the room. They were always greeted by a smile in return.

It just hadn't been a very good week. On Tuesday, Sam's father lost his job. Then on Wednesday, Sam's mother got to know the cost of their apartment was going up. Now it was Friday, and Sam received an invitation from Rosa to her birthday party.
Sam knew Rosa from Adventure Club. He knew he would enjoy Rosa's party, but he didn't want to go without a gift. What could he possibly buy her with the little bit of money he had? Sam knew he couldn't ask Mom or Dad for any money—not this week!
Later that afternoon, Sam noticed a second-hand book sale going on. He went there and had a quick look. Two books caught his eye, The first was a cookbook of Puerto Rican foods, and the second was a book about women explorers. "Rosa would like these," Sam thought, "but would it be ashamed to give her second-hand books for her birthday?"
Sam decided that a second-hand gift was better than no gift at all. Besides, Rosa supported recycling in a big way. So, she would probably like it. With his last dollar, Sam bought the books and went home. He felt a little better.
The party was on Saturday. Rosa opened all her gifts and thanked everyone for the nice things they had given her. She paused when she opened Sam's gift, which made him wonder if she liked the books, but nothing was said.
When Sam got home, he opened his e-mail and found this note from Rosa.
Dear Sam,
Of all the gifts I received today, yours was the nicest. How did you know I would love a book about women explorers and a cookbook of Puerto Rican foods? Now I have something to read that will inspire me to follow my dream of becoming an adventurer, and I have a book that I can share with my grandmother. She is getting older and wants to be sure her granddaughter knows how to make the -wonderful foods of Puerto Rico. Thank you so much.
Love, Rosa.
The week turned out to be a good one after all.
Does every dinner with your parents seem to turn into an argument? Have your once warm and open conversations become cold and guarded? You are not alone. Heated arguments and cold silences are common between teenagers and their parents.
Teenagers' physical changes may result in such family tensions. You may feel worried that you are developing at a different rate to your friends, shooting up in hight or getting left far behind. You might worry about your changing voice and weight problems. When it all gets too much, your parents are often the first goals of your anger.
It can be a big headache to balance your developing mental needs too. You enter a strange middle ground-- no longer a small child but not quite an adult. You have both a new hope for independence and a continued need for your parents' love and support. You feel ready to be more responsible and make decisions on your own. Unluckily, your parents do not always agree and that makes you feel unhappy. "Why can't they just let me go?" You may wonder. On the other hand, when you are trying to control your feelings, you wish they could be more caring and patient-- sometimes they forget that growing up is a hard ride. It can be difficult when your parents treat you like a child but expect you to act like an adult. All of this can lead to a breakdown in your relationship.
_____▲_____. The key to keeping the peace is regular and honest communication. When you disagree with your parents, take a minute to calm down and try to understand the situation from their point of view. Perhaps they have experienced something similar and do not want you to go through the same pain. After you have thought it through, explain your actions and feelings calmly, listen carefully, and address their concerns. Through this kind of healthy discussion, you will learn when to back down and when to ask your parents to relax their control.
Just remember that it is normal to fight with the stress and that you and your parents can work together to improve your relationship. The good news is that this stormy time will not last. Everything will turn out all right in the end, and the changes and challenges of your teenage years will prepare you for adulthood.

Last night I went to a concert of Chinese folk music with my Chinese friends. A piece of music named Erquan Yingyue (Moon Reflected on Second Spring) deeply moved me. It was one of the most (感人的)pieces of music I've ever heard. It sounded so sad that I almost cried along with it as I listened. Later I got to know the music was (写) by a folk musician Abing. Today it has become one of China's national (宝藏).
However, the road to his(成功) was not easy. His mother died when he was young. His father taught him to play many(音乐) instruments. By age 17, he was known for his talent in music. (不幸地)his father died. What was worse, he developed a serious illness and became blind. He had no choice but to perform on the streets to make money. His excellent skills made him popular (在……期间)his lifetime. He played and wrote many pieces of music. When we listen to his music, we can sense the beauty and (悲伤)in it. It makes us think about the wounds and pain we have (经历). For this reason, many people praise him as the musician who has greatly influenced erhu music. So it's really a pity that not many pieces of his music were(录制).
My friend, Robert, has a twin sister named Amanda. Though they get along well, there are some things about Amanda and her friends that(trouble) Robert. He can't understand how girls can talk for so long. For example, sometimes he leaves home to play football, Amanda and her friend, Sharon, are sitting on the sofa, talking. When he comes back two and a half hour (late), they're still staying in the same place, continuing the same conversation on the same topic. One day Robert was so curious that he asked Amanda what they talked about, but she (reply), "We're best friends. We talk about almost everything— film stars, pop songs, recipes, everything!"
Boys and girls have different attitudes towards friendship. Friendships between girls are usually based on shared feelings and support, but friendships between boys are based on shared activities or interests. A boy might be (careful)about sharing his feelings with his close friends. A (girl) closest friend, however, might be eager (急切的) to tell her about something that has happened in her life.
Many studies worldwide show that girls have more friendships than boys. In fact, many teenage boys can't name a single best friend. When they (ask), they often think for a while before answering, "My best friend? I can't think about that. I am busymy homework, and I have so many different friends that it is hard to choose just one best friend. "
Girls, , can usually answer the question immediately, "A best friend? Of course. We have a lot to share with each other. We get much more pleasure from talking, daydreaming. "
We have to realize: boys share activities, while girls share feelings. The qualities (品质) that boys and girls consider important in a friend (seem)to be the same, regardless of (无论) the basis of these friendships. The important thing to remember is that both of them are friendships. We all need friends in our lives.
Smart phones have become an important part of our daily lives. This is worrying, as long-time use of smart phones harms children's eyesight and even the brain. It was reported China had 175 million Internet users under the age of 18, with 74 percent having their own mobile phones.
It's already common practice in some countries to limit students' use of mobile phones, France passed a law stopping the use of mobile phones on school grounds for children under the age of 15. Other countries, including the United States, Italy and Japan, have also passed laws banning students from bringing phones to schools or classrooms.
The Ministry of Education (教育部) in China said primary and middle school students must be stopped from bringing mobile phones to school. Those who require their phones for some need must get their parents' and teachers' agreement and must hand their phones over during class time.
An English teacher from Beijing noticed that many students lost themselves in their phones. She said, "Most students are short of self-control. Spending too much time on the phone prevents them from learning." A parent from Shanghai said, "The rules are good for children and controlling phone use is the right way to put their focus back on studies."
A 16-year-old student said, "It is unwise to stop all the students taking their phones to school." He thinks adults can't simply cut them off from the Internet in the digital times and it's more important to develop students' ability to manage themselves.
