One morning, when I was leaving for my business, a middle-aged man came up and asked me for help. He said he had no1to get food for his large family.
"You look2. Why don't you work?" I asked. "Simply because I cannot get work, sir." "If I give you work, what you want?" "As long as I can get bread for my family, sir." he3.
I decided to find out if he4meant what he said. "OK. I'll give you one pound an hour, if you can5a brick(砖)under your arm and walk around the square for five hours without stopping. "Thank you, sir. I will. "
I found a brick and started him on his walk before I went to my6. I never thought he would do what he had7.
When I came back five hours later, I saw him8walking, with the brick under his arm.
I stopped him and gave him9pounds. He thanked me and told me that some people had10to help him when they knew why he was doing all this. He would go and ask11for work. Before leaving, he asked if I would give him the12. I did.

Shenzhen is a city in South China. It is not very big, but it has attracted people of the whole country and the whole world as well.
Just about thirty years ago, it was only a small fishing village. There were not many people there. Most of them lived on fishing. Things have greatly changed since the 1980s. It became the first special economic zone(经济特区) in China.
Because of the opening policy(政策), economic changes between China and the outside world have increased greatly. People can come and go easily between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Both foreigners and Chinese have built a lot of factories, companies and tourist attractions there. People all over the country have come to find jobs. Many of them have settled down in this new booming(兴起的) city.
Shenzhen is developing so fast that it has become a well—known metropolis(大都市) in China.
A jobless man wanted very much to have the position of "office boy" at Microsoft. The HR manager interviewed him and then watched him cleaning the floor as a test. "You have passed the test," he said. "Give me your e-mail address and I'll send you the form to fill in and the date when you may start. " The man replied, "But I don't have a computer, neither an e-mail." "I'm sorry, " said the HR manager. "If you don't have an e-mail, that means you are not living. And anyone who isn't living cannot have the job. "
The man left with no hope at all. He didn't know what to do with only $10 in his pocket. He thought and thought. Then he went to the supermarket and bought 10 kilos of tomatoes. He sold the tomatoes from door to door. In less than two hours, he had 20 dollars. He repeated the operation three times, and started to go early every day, and returned home late. Shortly, he bought a cart , then a truck, then he had his own fleet of delivery vehicles (运货车队). Five years later, the man was one of the biggest food retailers (零售商) in the US.
One day, one of his friends asked him for his e-mail. He said, "I haven't got one." His friend couldn't believe his ears. "Can you imagine what you could have been if you had an e-mail?" The man thought for a while and replied, "Yes, I'd be an office boy at Microsoft!"
Men have always wanted to fly like birds. Birds can fly easily because they are light, but men's bodies are heavier.
Men first went up into the air in balloons. These were big bags, and they were filled with gas. Hydrogen (氢气) is a useful gas for balloons. It is lighter than air. Helium is also lighter than air, but it costs a lot of money. So balloons are usually filled with hydrogen.
Balloons have to fly with the wind as they have no engines (发动机) to drive them. Later, men made airships. They are balloons with engines. They are also filled with hydrogen.
Aircraft (飞机) with wings now take people across the world. Powerful engines drive these machines across the sky. Some of the engines are like the engines of cars, but they are more powerful.
There is another kind of engine, we call it the jet (喷射) engine. An English engineer invented the jet engine. At the same time, Germans were also building a jet engine. In May 1941, the English engineer's new engine was fixed in an aircraft, and the aircraft flew quite well.
Jet engines are very powerful. Usually two to four are enough for an airplane, but some big aircraft need six. Anyone in a moving jet plane can feel the power of the engines. Jet planes can travel faster than sound. As a flying jet plane leaves its noise behind, we do not hear it until it has gone.
Rabbit Shiny and tortoise(乌龟) Smily were neighbours. One day they were reading a story about their great grandfathers:Shiny's and Smily's great grandfathers decided to have a race. While Shiny's great grandfather fell asleep during the race, Smily's great grandfather won the race by slowly walking towards the finishing line.
Smily said, "If your great grandfather didn't go to sleep, my great granddad might never win. So his win was not a real win. "
The next day there was a notice in the jungle(丛林) newspaper. It said that there would be a race and the winner would win many prizes. The race started from the bear's house. From there, the runners had to cross the river. But most of the animals could not both run fast and swim fast. So they didn't know what to do. Shiny and Smily made a plan.
Shiny ran, while smily was sitting on his back. He and other animals, like the deer, reached the river side at the same time. But they saw the swift(湍急的) water and stood there because they were worried. None of them liked the idea of crossing the river. Smily quickly got into the water and Shiny sat on his back. Smily started swimming. Soon they reached the other side of the river. Shiny got down from Smily's back and Smily climbed on Shiny's back again. Shiny ran fast. They reached the finish line first.
"Both of them are the winners." The president of the jungle said, "Shiny and Smily helped each other during the race and they won. So let's give them a big hand. "
