Some British and American people like to invite friends and colleagues for a meal at home. You should not be upset if your English friends don't invite you home. It doesn't mean they don't like you.

Dinner parties usually start between 7 and 8 p. m. , and end at about 11. Ask your hosts what time you should arrive. It's polite to bring flowers, chocolates or a bottle of wine as a present.

Do you want to be extra polite? Say how much you like the room, or the pictures on the wall. But remember not to ask how much things cost.

You'll probably start the meal with soup, or something small as a “starter” (第一道菜), then you'll have meat or fish with vegetables, and then a dessert (甜食), followed by coffee. It's polite to finish everything on your plate and to take more if you want it. Some people eat bread with their meal, but not everyone does.

Before they take out their cigarettes after the meal, most people usually ask, “Do you mind if I smoke here?”

Did you enjoy the evening? Call your hosts the next day, or write them a short “thank you” letter. Perhaps it seems funny to you, but British and American people always say, “thank you, thank you, and thank you.”

    1. (1) If you aren't invited to dinner at home by English or American friends, __________.
A . it shows they don't like you B . it shows they have no time to get together C . it shows they don't want to make friends with you D . it doesn't show they don't like you
    2. (2) What does the underlined word “upset” mean?
      A . happy B . hard C . unhappy D . bored
    3. (3) When your friend invites you to go to his or her home, _____________.
A . you shouldn't take anything with you B . you may take a small present with you C . you must take some flowers D . you may go at any time
    4. (4) In England and America, it's not polite to _____________.
A . ask the price of a thing B . eat all the food on your plate C . talk to your hosts D . eat bread with their meal
    5. (5) Which is NOT right?
A . In England, it usually takes more than three hours to have a dinner party at home. B . If you are invited to go to a dinner party, you must arrive early. C . It's not polite to smoke after a meal without asking. D . If you enjoy the evening, you can write a short “thank you” letter to your host or call them the next day.

Feb. 17 should have been the start of the spring semester for many middle and primary schools in China. However, to control the new coronavirus outbreak (新型冠状病毒疫情), many schools have delayed the start of the semester, following instructions from the Ministry of Education (MOE). But students in China are still studying.

Instead of having class at school, many students in Beijing and Guangzhou began their first day of online classes on Feb 17. “Online courses are only temporary measures (暂时的措施) taken during the epidemic, so when the new semester begins, schools should not replace (替代) classroom teaching with online classes,” Lü Yugang from the ministry told China Daily.
