When 36-year-old Andy Duran decided to return to his favorite high school hobby—skateboarding(玩滑板)—in January 2021, the only problem he expected to meet was his own ability to master the sport after such a long time. However, the 340-pound skateboarder soon realized that was the least of his problems. Duran's challenges began before he even stepped on a skateboard. "I couldn't find any resources for fat skaters, what types of boards to try, or where to buy pads or shirts," he said.
What Duran did find instead was a false belief that plus-sized people should not be skating. To change this, Duran founded Chub Rollz—a skating and skateboarding community for overweight skaters. "I knew that not only did I need to get back into it to prove people wrong, but I needed to create a safe space for other overweight skaters to enjoy skateboarding without worrying about being laughed at," Duran said.
To encourage plus-sized people to join in the fun sport, Duran created a list of recommended products for fat skaters. He also held roller skating and skateboarding classes, teaching beginners in person. So far, the reaction to Chub Rollz has been "really positive". Duran has also been contacted by some skateboarding brands offering to create larger clothing sizes and been offered free equipment by skating organizations like Skate Like a Girl.
Though encouraged, Duran believes a lot more needs to be done. "I want to see more changes in communities. Maybe skate shops can create a more welcoming environment for all types of skaters," he explains.
For those hesitant to join in their desired activity due to their body size, Duran has this to say: "Be confident, as you're often your worst critic."
When the Apollo astronauts(宇航员) landed on the Moon in 1969, millions of people were rather sad. The person to blame for this was an artist named Chesley Bonestell. For many years, Bonestell had been creating beautifully detailed paintings of the Moon and planets. Viewers of his artwork were unhappy because the real Moon did not look like Bonestell's pictures of it.
As a space artist, Bonestell tried to make his drawings look exciting and as true as the Moon is. He worked closely with astronomers and scientists to get the most up-to-date scientific information available. But in the 1940s and 1950s, no one had ever seen another planet up close. Yet Bonestell's paintings looked so real that some people thought they were photographs.
Even though Bonestell was interested in astronomy, he did not start out as a space artist. As a young man he studied architecture—the art and science of designing and making buildings .In 1938, Bonestell became a special effects artist in Hollywood. It was here that he learned he could improve his paintings by following the methods used in the movies.
In 1944, a popular magazine published a series of Bonestell's paintings of the planet Saturn. He drew Saturn as if it were seen by someone standing on each of the planet's moons. The results were dazzling. Within a few years, Bonestell's artwork was appearing regularly in magazines and books on astronomy and space flight.
Many of Bonestell's artworks had been right all along. But the biggest surprise was the Moon. Someone asked Bonestell what he was thinking when he saw the first pictures from the Moon. "I thought how wrong I was!" he said. "My mountains were sharp, and they aren't on the Moon."
But he shouldn't have felt bad. No space artist had ever before taken so many people to so many faraway worlds. In the years just before the first manned space flights, Bonestell's artwork prepared people for the amazing space adventure to come.
The food, by its very nature, may be harmful for us; it may change while stored; or various chemicals may be added. It may grow in soil contaminated (污染) with lead or arsenic, or it may be watered high in arsenic. Grains, fruit and vegetables are sprayed with chemicals, and these may combine to be far more harmful than one chemical alone. Fish may be caught in areas of sea contaminated with mercury (汞) and arsenic. Meat may contain antibiotic residues.
Furthermore, there are additives we are concerned about. What are added to food to maintain or improve the safety, freshness, taste, or appearance of food are known as food additives. Some food additives have been in use for centuries for preservation—such as salt (in meats such as bacon or dried fish), sugar, or sulphur dioxide (in wine). Additives are also needed to ensure processed food remains safe and in good condition throughout its journey from factories or industrial kitchens, during transportation to warehouses and shops, and finally to consumers.
However, food production is highly competitive. If companies can cut their costs by using additives like chemical flavouring, they are likely to do so. It will increase profits, and consumers won't always realize they are being tricked. As a result, most drinks stating that they are fruit flavoured contain no fruit at all, while most of the rest contain only a small quantity of fruit.
Oh dear! We have to eat, and we just have to find the best food we can, and treat it carefully. Compared with those in other countries, it is fortunate for us to have access to information, and to have choice available in the shops and markets. Consumers have the rights to know clearly about what they have bought.
Besides, food should be prepared by someone who knows how to make the food safe. Eggs need enough cooking to kill off salmonella. Green potatoes should be thrown away, and the end of a mango should be cut off and thrown away.
As a parent, you must have a lot of concerns about the various skills you would like your child to acquire. Music is one of them. On the other hand, it is great for a child's overall development if he or she has an interest in art.
The concentration helps them with their grades. Their learning and communication skills will be better than others of their own age. They also develop lots of confidence and selfesteem.
Another advantage of your child to learn music becomes apparent only at a later stage. It can be very beneficial and many top musicians have a very early exposure to music and connect this with their later success.
You can start when your child is only a baby, by exposing him or her to a wide range of music at home. And you could sustain your child's interest by having both of you singing together.
Some parents start their children on a musical instrument as early as 3 years of age. This is great if the child is having a good time, especially when a child's brain has a wonderful capacity for mastering new skills. It goes without saying that you should not have to drag your child to lessons. You can be assured that nothing productive will come out of it.
If you start your child on music lessons by the age of 5, taking care to encourage him or her and not to push him or her, your child will grow up into an accomplished adult with a wellrounded personality.
A. It can have good effects on your child.
B. This is selecting music as a career.
C. And your child will have a lifelong dislike of music.
D. Otherwise, you'll completely spoil your child's future.
E. You could ensure that there is a song or tune played in the background.
F. The advantages of teaching children to play a musical instrument are many.
G. On the one hand, you can encourage your child's creativity and natural hobby.
Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do. Her name was Mrs. White.
I still remember I 1 to write a lot in her class. When I brought back what I wrote, my mother would look at it and see there were so many 2. No red corrections, though. And always a star. Sometimes 3 a "Good!" That would make my heart filled with happiness. But it no doubt 4 my mother, so one day she went to meet Mrs. White and asked her why she never 5 the wrong spellings of words in red pen or 6 grammatical errors.
And Mrs. White told her, "The children are just beginning to get 7 about using words and 8 sentences. I don't want to 9 that excitement with red ink. Spelling and grammar can 10 . The wonder of words won't..." Thanks to Mrs. White, I grew up learning to use words with full 11 . I had no worries about writing what I meant even if I couldn't quite spell it out.
And it 12 me that if Mrs. White had used her red pen then, I 13 wouldn't be telling you about this now. She is such a 14 teacher who allows the joy, wonder and excitement of expression to 15 , however imperfectly. Because to flower is better than not to flower. And a bud (花蕾) once removed never opens.
To celebrate the Lantern Festival the Palace Museum organized its first light show in the Forbidden City.
The complex, home to Chinese emperors for five (century), was opened at night the first time in 94 years. It was lit up with giant red lanterns and projections of ancient paintings. Masterpieces such as Along the River During the Qingming Festival were projected on the roofs, giving visitors a feeling like walking through time. The design team (smart) combined high technology lighting with the principles of cultural relic preservation.
Only 3, 000 people (allow) in on that day: 500 people who booked their tickets online, and 2,500(invite) guests including model workers, officers, soldiers, and ambassadors.
Withseries of well-planned and tourist-friendly cultural activities, the Palace Museum is now on a campaign to make traditional Chinese culture more (access) to the general public. It has set an example to other museums in our country, most of seem to be still living in days gone by. Hopefully, the handsome turnover will be used appropriately (protect) the Forbidden City and improve (it) international image of being part of the world's cultural heritage.

Dear fellow students,
……
Yours,
Li Hua
It was an evening in July. The skies were darker than normal. Rain fell in big drops, thunder crashed in and lightning flashed across the skies. I shook with cold and fear as I walked through the streams of muddy water. Cars moved slowly because of the traffic jam, while passers-by were rushing by, completely wet in the heavy rain.
Along the way, I saw some schoolchildren grasping their heavy schoolbags and heading home. As more thunder crashed and boomed, I also sped up. Near a crossing, some road repair work was left unfinished. Obviously the workers had left in a hurry because of the storm. There were a few warning signs but it was hard to see what they said and what was on the road. I took a pace towards them — there were pieces of wood and metal as well as a hole which now was half-covered with boards.
I carefully avoided the possible danger and moved on. Seconds later, I stopped as I heard some sounds. They sounded like crying. I turned around, held my breath and listened, trying to figure out where the sounds were coming from, but all I could hear was the wind and the rain. "Maybe it is just the wind," I thought to myself and was about to leave.
"Help!" a loud and desperate scream came behind. Quickly, I turned back and traced the sound to where it had come from. My eyes fell on the place. It was horrible — one young child had fallen into the gaping hole in the road. My heart grew heavier. The boards had been moved away by the force of the rushing water and wind. I could barely see the child as it was dark all around me. I tried to save him, but all my efforts were in vain (徒劳). "Don't panic!" I pretended to be calm and shouted at the top of my voice. "I'll soon get you out of there."
