As I look up at the hundreds of fireworks in the sky, I hear the bells ringing in small temple welcoming the coming of the Chinese New Year. Though I may not believe in or understand many of the New Year traditions here, the similarities between the coming of this New Year and the beginning of my new life in China are not lost on a big boy like me.
My fist few days in China were a cultural shock to say the least. Having arrived late in the semester, I immediately had to begin my beginners' Chinese classes, along with the newest class of overseas students. Being surrounded by a language that int your own is unbelievably annoying. Due to the picture-based fashion of Chinese writing, it's not like you can have a guess, or work it out through whatever knowledge you have from other Latin-originated languages. If you don't know what it says, then that's it. However, with time passing, I have found myself progressing, though painfully slowly. The first time I called a taxi by myself, the driver actually understood where I wanted to go,which is hugely rewarding(有益的). Sill it is never long before my lack of language skill is exposed(暴露的)and I come crashing back to earth, usually immediately upon leaving the taxi.
Gaining a language is a huge valuable skill. However, it is not the only thing I will gain in China. After this year of learning Chinese, I aim to gain my master's degree here at University of Jinan. Opportunities do come around rather often: from being offered jobs teaching English, to being asked to appear on game-shows for Shandong TV. So, for now, I am just looking forward to expanding my cultural horizons(眼界)and enjoying my time here. I takes some time to get used to everything, but that's part of the adventure and, most of all, employment. So, much like the Chinese New Year that I am lucky enough to be part of, I am just looking forward to a fresh start and a new journey in China.
In American English, when someone says he has to "face the music", it doesn't mean he is going to a musical performance or a concert.
Imagine a friend asks you to take care of her beautiful sports car. She says, "Please don't drive i. I's an extremely fast car." But you want to pretend the car i yours. So, you drive it around one night. As bad luck would have it, you lose control of the car and drive it into a stop sign. When your fiend returns, you must "face the music". It can be losing her friendship or paying for repairs to her car or both.
In 1851, the writer James Fenimore explained "face the music". In a theater the orchestra(管弦乐队)sits in front of the stage. So, the actors on stage face the musicians. Many actors are very nervous, and this condition is called "stage fright "They may want to run away. "Facing the music" means accepting it and not giving in to it.
Word experts say "face the music" may come from the army. A soldier could be forced out of the horse cavalry(骑兵团)because of the serious mistake in the war. The army drummers would play a sad beat. The soldier would be seated backward on a horse and face the music of the drums.
To "take your medicine" is to accept the bad result from something you have done. And if someone says, "You made your bed. Now lie in it, "he means you create a bad situation and you must deal with it. "Pay the piper" is also similar to "face the music". But it's fun to "lie in the bed and enjoy music".
There are many idioms(习语)in the English language, whose real meanings are largely based on the context. Don't read only with your eyes, or you would make a foo of yourself.
On July 1lth Virgin Galactic(维珍银河)finally realized the promise that it would take passengers on life-changing trips in its spaceships. For 4 minutes, its 6 temporarily weightless passengers, including the firm's co-founder, Sir Richard Branson, saw the planet's curvature(曲度)against the blackness of outer space. He may have been pleased to beat Jeff Bezos, Amazon's retired boss, who would go slightly higher for slightly less time in a vehicle built by his own company, Blue Origin, on July 20th.
The two are among a growing group of fans who believe space travel's time has come. Suborbital(亚轨道的) tourism is part of a broader space economy that has boomed over the past decade thanks to technological advances. Those at Morgan Stanley expect the entire space economy to bring in $1 trillion by 2040, from $350 billion today. UBS expects the entire space economy to produce $800 billion by the end of this decade. Space travel, it thinks, will make" a big contribution" to that total.
But that is highly unlikely. For example, space travel is not even Blue Origin's main goal. The company is focusing on developing a large new rocket for launching satellites, on selling advanced rocket engines to other companies and on winning NASA contracts such as that for a system to land humans on the Moon. In the long run, Mr. Bezos doesn't see Blue Origin as a provider of services to thrill-seekers.
The business can be promising once regular flights begin to offset(抵消)the rockets' development costs. But how fast and by how much is uncertain. Without tourist-friendly places to visit, space travel, with its far higher ticket prices, will not be a huger earner.
Another challenge-also the biggest uncertainty-relates to safety. History has shown that a disaster can set progress back by years. Even with no accidents, problems may come up. Strict top-down rules could mean that industry will no longer have the freedom to pursue new approaches to improving safety.
Space travel may remain a hobby for a few super-rich with a desire to take risks and lots of time to spare. Not exactly a mass market, then, for the time being.
Think of any objects in your house, meals you eat, or gestures you use, and you'll find evidence of culture. You should learn more about it and know how you can keep it strong. Here are some tips.

※

A few weeks ago, I was siting at a picnic table with my wife outside a beer factory. We were having a1when a car pulled up near its entrance.
The doors opened and out2whom I believed to be a family of three-mother, father and daughter. They3to be the entertainers for the evening. Quickly, the father and the mother began constructing a singing site in the parking lot. They4a guitar and a microphone. It was a hot evening, but they carefully set up the5 _.
Meanwhile, the daughter stood behind their car. She wasn't6.She was on her phone and looked to be texting. I thought to myself, "Why doesn't she help her parents7the equipment?" I8did what I should never do: formed a view of this girl.
It turned out that I was9when I had her in my office a few days later to talk about her story: a 9-year-old playing a small guitar who later10with popular singers Scotty McCreery and Scotty Williams, and has written over sixty11.
That night outside the beer factory,16-year-old Ayla Lynn Mayo was not helping her parents set up the equipment because they didn't12her to. They have a13way of doing things and she is not needed. She was on the phone texting people to come to hear her perform. That's how14build an audience. It's not her singing gift but what kind of person she is that15me. She is patient and16."I have got plenty of chances to perform and god pay, but I'm holding myself back," she said. "I want to finish school first."
Life in music won't be17for Ayla. But she has plenty of family support, a great18, and the ability to write music. She has a chance and she has already19me wrong. Don't be too influenced by first impression. It's the second impression that may delightfully20you.
China's Long March 8 rocket set a new record at the Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan on February 27,2022. It's the first time that the rocket(lift) off with 22 satellites, and they were later launched into space.
The technology behind a single rocket lifting off with multiple satellites inside is complex, as all the satellites must be arranged(suitable)apart inside, like "passengers" in a crowded vehicle. The design of the rocket must be such that the satellites inside don' touch or block(阻挡) each other in the launching process.
Also, when the rocket reaches its launching point, the doors must open(let) the satellites come out. The timing(control)so that the satellites have enough time and do not hit against each other. In 1981,China sent 3 satellites into orbit with one single rocket launch, thus (become)the third country in the world to have mastered the technology. Even today, only 5 countries and the European Space Agency have the technology, but the others .
More satellites are needed to meet the demand of(variety) fields, from remote communication to weather forecasting, even automated driving. Starlink, is part of Elon Musk's SpaceX project, plans to launch 40,000 satellites. Some of them are even smallera coffee cup or a book, but they still need a rocket to send them into space first.
The more satellites China can send with a single rocket launch, the more competitive it will be. This means China still has a long way to go in developing "single rocket, multiple satellite" technology.
In January 2021,a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carried 143 satellites into orbit, setting a new world record for the most satellites(launch)by a single rocket. But due to the efforts of Chinese scientists and engineers, China might break that record one day.
