Once there was a poor little girl living near a forest. She had no family and no one to love her, so she often1 sad and lonely. One day, when she was walking in the forest, she found that a small 2 was trapped unluckily in a bush. The butterfly tried to fly away 3 failed. The kind little girl saved the butterfly with great care. Instead of flying away, the butterfly turned 4 a beautiful fairy(仙女). The little girl was very5. "Thank you for 6 me. You are so kind. I will make any of your dreams come true, "said the fairy. The little girl thought for a moment and then said, "I want to be7!" The fairy said, "Very well. I will help you. " And she said something in the little girl's ear. Then the fairy disappeared.
As the kind little girl grew up, she was8 ready to help people in need and was popular among the villagers. No one in the village was as happy as she was. Everyone asked her the 9of her happiness. She always smiled and 10. "The secret of my happiness is that I listened to a kind 11 when I was a little girl."
When the kind girl became a very old woman and was dying, the neighbours in the12 all gathered(聚拢) around her bed because they were 13 that her secret of happiness would die with her. They asked, "Please tell us what the kind fairy said."

Dear Mr. Hunt,
My problem is that I can't get on good with my family. |
|
Relations among my parents have become difficult. They fight a lot, |
|
and I real don't like it. It's the only communication they have. |
|
I don't know if I should say something to them about this. |
|
When they argue, it's like a big, black cloudy hanging |
|
over our home. Instead, my elder brother is not very nice to me. |
|
He always refuse to let me watch my favorite TV show. |
|
Instead, he watches whatever he wants until later at night, |
|
I think this is fair. At home, |
|
I always feel alone and worried. Is that normal? What can I do? |
|

Being safe at school and in your everyday life needs knowledge. If you remember the following information, your life will be safer.
You should think it over by yourself when you meet trouble. If you don't know how to deal with it, you may ask for help from your teachers or classmates.
If you cannot swim, don't get into the water. Cry for help if you drop in the water. Look after yourself all the time.
Don't play with matches or candles, because it may cause fire. If your house catches fire and you have to run away through smoke, move on your hands and knees with your head 30-60 centimeters above the floor. Remember there's cleaner and cooler air near the floor during the fire.
If you are hit by a car, remember the number of the car. And then call the police or your parents right away.
You must lock the door inside and close the window when you are at home by yourself. You should put the mobile phone near you. Never open the door when you hear someone knocking at the door because your parents have the keys and they know your phone number.
A. If you fall into the water B. Stay at home by yourself C. If you are in a traffic accident |
D. When you meet trouble at school E. When there is a fire F. When you are ill |
My grandfather Jack is 96 years old and he has had an interesting life. He has travelled a lot in his life in the Far East. He visited the Taj Mahal (灵庙) in India and the Pyramids in Egypt. He hunted (狩猎) lions in Africa and rode a camel in the Sahara Desert (撒哈拉沙漠). He says the most beautiful place he has travelled to is Kathmandu (加德满都) in Nepal.
Jack has married twice. His first wife died when she was 32. He met his second wife Maria while he was cycling round France. They have been married for 50years, and they have lived happily in a small village since they got married.
Jack says that he has never been ill in his life. The secret of good health, according to my grandfather, is exercise. He goes swimming every morning. He has done this since he was a boy. He also has a glass of wine every night! Perhaps that is his secret!
John is 14 years old. He is a student of Grade Eight. He was a very active and happy boy two years ago. But everything changed after he started to play computer games. He never plays basketball or football with his friends any more. And when he sits in the classroom, he can't listen to the teachers. He sleeps in class. And he spends less and less time in studying. So he gets bad marks in tests. But he is very different after school is over. He stays in the net bar until it is closed. Ah, he loses himself in computer games. His parents can do nothing to stop him. Every morning in the school, when we see that he is so tired after a night's "busy working", we really feel sad. He is too tired!
(A): Headaches have many causes(起因). We often say, "Take two aspirins(阿司匹林)." It is not always the best idea. First, stop and think you have a headache.
Do you drink lots of coffee tea or cola? These all have caffeine. People who take a lot of caffeine every day often get headaches. The cures? Drink a little of these every day. Take a week or ten days to give it .
Do you get a headache after reading or watching TV? Some headaches happen when you make your eyes (work) too hard. Go to see eye doctor. You may need glasses.
How much did you eat today? (eat) nothing can also cause a headache. The cure is to eat three meals a day at right times.
(B). In the past 10 years, my hometown (change) a lot in many ways. The (big) change is the environment. The air is fresh and the streets are clean. Many people don't live in the old houses anymore. Builders have setup (thousand) of buildings of different styles. I think my hometown is becoming more and more beautiful. I think you should think about (visit) the beautiful city. I'm sure you (love) it.
Shyness means feeling afraid when other people are around you. Some children were shy when they were born. Some become very shy later because of their life experiences. In fact, everybody gets shy sometimes. It is just how much they feel shy. Most people have red faces and talk in broken sentences when they are shy. Some won, t go to a restaurant because they are too nervous to order and pay for their food. Some are afraid of meeting new people, so they seldom go outside. This kind of shyness can be bad for a person.
If shyness doesn't stop you from doing what you want to do, being shy isn't a big problem. Some experts say shy people are good at working because they think more and talk less. But remember not to let good opportunities pass you by just because of shyness. If you have to sing a song at a birthday party or give some performances in front of others, just do it. There, s nothing for you to be afraid of.
Almost everybody in America will spend a part of his or her life behind a shopping cart(购物手推车). They will, in a lifetime, push the chrome-plated contraptions many miles. But few will know-or even think to ask-who it was that invented them.
Sylvan N. Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937. At that time he was in the supermarket business. Every day he would see shoppers lugging (吃力地携带) groceries around in baskets they had to carry.
One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract more business.
On June 4, 1937, Goldman's first carts were ready for use in his market. He was terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldn't wait to see them using his invention.
But Goldman was disappointed. Most shoppers gave the cart a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try. After a while, Goldman decided to ask customers why they weren't using his carts. " Don't you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket?" one shopper replied. But Goldman wasn't beaten yet. He knew his carts would be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try. To this end, Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony customers.
As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and larger numbers of customers to his market. But not only did more people come-those Who came bought more. With larger, easier-to- handle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a greater number of items than before.
Today's shopping carts are five times larger than Goldman's original model. Perhaps that's one reason Americans today spend more than five times as much money on food each year as they did before 1937-before the coming of the shopping cart.
