Many Chinese people will wonder what presents to get for their moms on Mother's Day, but not many know Mother's Day is actually a festival from overseas.
Mother's Day originated (起源) in America during the early 20th century. The festival spread to China as early as the 1980s and was widely accepted.
Why did a foreign festival become popular in China? In fact, Chinese traditional culture has always encouraged filial (孝顺的) devotion to parents. There are many stories which show filial respect in ancient China. For example, the story of "Taste Liquid (液体的) Medicine for Mother" tells us the filial virtue (美德) of Emperor Wen of the Western Han dynasty. His mother had been sick for three years. He often stayed up by her bedside and cared for her day and night. He tasted the liquid medicine first before she drank it. Also, mothers' love is a repeated subject in Chinese ancient poems, like "Song of the Parting Son" by Meng Jiao, a poet of the Tang dynasty. Now this poem is still a must in the school textbooks. Children in China are brought up with the education of filial devotion. On special days, people often use roses or forget-me-nots to express love. Carnations are considered as the perfect flowers for mothers around the world, but few know that China has its own flower for mothers — the tiger lily.
Love for mothers can have different ways of expression. What matters most is love, not the festival itself. What mothers truly want is perhaps just a simple expression of love from their children.
Technology is developing fast and it has become an important part of our life. Then what will the world be like in the future?
3-D food will be both delicious and nutritious (有营养的). We can use 3-D printers to print some basic materials. ① And we can go further. Scientists believe that we just need to turn on a printer in the kitchen and then we can enjoy our favourite food whenever we like.
② 5G network will allow many more people to get information. Big companies like China Mobile and China
Unicom will start to offer 5G. It is said that 5G promises download speeds 10 to 20 times faster than 4G. For example, we can download a film within just 1 second. But with a 4G network, it takes a few minutes. There will be much bandwidth (带宽) and we can get unlimited (无限的) information.
Underwater cities will provide more space. The earth is becoming more and more crowded. We may turn to underwater homes, which will be built as low as 15 kilometers below the sea. And the different temperatures at the different depths (深度) of the sea can be used to provide power for the homes.
③ For us common people on the earth, the dream of travelling around space will come true. In the coming years, spacecraft will be as popular as buses, trains and planes. We can leave our home and enter space to take an adventure. And even we will get used to living there.
A robot will be a part of life. Robots can do many of the same things as we humans do like driving cars. But they will be used in other areas as well. They will be able to think. They can tell the difference between right and wrong. They can feel sadness or joy. When we are lonely, they can have a talk with us like real friends.
④ In a word, just as Jules Verne said, "Anything one man can imagine, other men can make real."
I traveled to France with three other adults recently. During the first five days, we were in Paris. And in the second week, we were on a ship on the Burgundy Canal. Then I spent the last week in Ecorsaint, a tiny village about an hour away from Dijon, near Flavigny, where the movie Chocolat was filmed.
We had rented an apartment with a kitchen in Paris, expecting to cook our meals because I had peanut allergy (花生过敏). But we couldn't really find anything to cook in the supermarket, so we ate lunch and dinner at the little restaurants that line the main streets. They all put their menus outside on the street, which makes choosing a restaurant a little easier.
Most restaurants in France seemed very careful about food allergies. I was almost always advised to eat a salad.
In some cases, even the salads were controlled. I ordered the salads without sauce and used either my own salad dressing (调料) or just oil.
The second week on the ship was great and I would certainly introduce it to anyone with peanut allergy. The meals were great and the chef checked everything I ate many times. If something wasn't safe, he would serve something else instead.
The last week we rented a vacation house. Next time I'll do this for the entire trip. We went to the open air on Saturday morning and went crazy buying fresh fruits, cheese and vegetables. We also did some shopping in stores. Many labels (标签) were only in French and perhaps German. One of my traveling friends is a good cook, so she had a great time doing all the cooking for the week!
During the entire trip, I avoided breads for two reasons. I had a look at a few bakeries and saw lots of breads with nuts, but I was also concerned about lupin flour, a kind of flour added to wheat flour in France. It's easy to cause allergies.
In spite of a three-week diet of wine and cheese, I lost 4 or 5 pounds. It's amazing, isn't it?

Ben bought a new TV last month. But he found something wrong with it last night. The screen was always white and black. He didn't know what to do.
Read was late for his class this morning. He got up late because his alarm clock didn't go off. He was very angry because he just bought that clock yesterday.
Alice's watch doesn't work these days. It is a digital (数字的) watch, but the screen of the watch was broken when she was playing badminton. She would like to buy a new one, but she has no enough money.
Bess couldn't send the email to her English teacher because she couldn't visit the Internet. She tried to fix it, but failed. She didn't know what to do.

Once I heard a humorist (谐星) say, "I go to my psychiatrist (精神病医生) and pay him $75 an hour. But all he does is asking me the same question which my father used to ask me all the time —1do you think you are?'"
That's not a bad question, actually. I spent the first 20 or 30 years of my life 2who I really was. I thought I would never know what to study in school, and I wasn't sure I would work out what kind of person I might be happy to spend my life 3. Sometimes I thought I had known myself quite well, but quickly I 4my idea. And through the years, I changed my thoughts again and again. It seemed that I would never be able to 5the question "Who do you think you are?"
I like Benjamin Kubelski's story. In 1902, his father gave him a 6for his eighth birthday. It cost $50. That was a great deal of money in those days, 7for a Russian family that had recently moved to the US. Benjamin 8well and could play for some concerts. At the age of 18, he teamed up with a pianist as a musical band in Vaudeville. 9later he felt that the violin couldn't meet his wish. Then one night on the concert, Benjamin suddenly wanted to tell the audience a(n) 10event that happened during the day. He later said that when the audience 11, he felt so great. "That laughter ended my days as a(n) 12," he said. And it began his life as the comedian (喜剧演员) Jack Benny.
He found who he was and 13was ready. He followed his heart and 14as a famous comedian. Perhaps, you and I still haven't known ourselves surely. But listen to your heart. Listen to that small 15 and make up your mind to follow its advice. I don't know where you will end up, but it will be all right.
At my old school in Toronto, I was on the football and volleyball teams, so I was very popular and had lots of friends. Everything changed when I was 16 years old because my parents made a (decide) to move to Florida. The (one) few days in my new school were very difficult. The class timetable was different, and the teachers were (strict) than in my old school. Each teacher gave us a lot of homework every night. As result, my free time became limited. My homework kept me busy that I could only watch TV on Saturday nights. All the students dressed in shorts and T-shirts instead of school uniforms. Some kids tried to be nice me, but I did not want to talk to (they). To me, they looked and acted funny! After a few weeks, no one even tried to talk to me anymore. I began to feel lonely. Two months passed before I got the courage (talk) to some classmates.
Finally, I found they were (normally) people, just like me. I began to develop some relationships and even good friendships. I learned a valuable lesson about (make) friends that year.
