When my children were teenagers, I bought a fridge magnet(磁铁)with what was said to be a First Nations or Native American prayer. I 1it on the door of our fridge in full view. I found the words to be thought provoking (发人深省)and hoped 2 would teach my children to have more patience and be more forgiving of others.
3 my children are adults now. I have kept the magnet on our fridge door for the past twenty-five years. During that time, I've often found that the message has helped me 4situations from a different view.
For example, a number of 5ago, I was on my way to a farewell party with several workmates. A popular department manager was retiring. As we were leaving the6, We met our other workmate, Wendy, who had previously planned to attend the event with us. I asked Wendy if she wanted us to wait for her, and she replied in a quite rude manner, 7our invitation. One of my other 8was quite annoyed.
I don't know why you even bothered to invite her," she said.
Reflecting on how tired Wendy appeared as she rushed away from us, I commented that perhaps we9 just give Wendy a break and forgive her for declining at the last minute. She was 10having a bad day, and it wasn't worth holding a grudge(怨恨) against her if we weren't aware of what caused her11behavior.
A week later, I 12that when we met Wendy, she was returning to the office from a medical appointment where she was told she had cancer. She died a year later. Wendy wasn't being 13 to us. She had just received a very horrified diagnosis(诊断). On reflection, I'm amazed she was able to reply at all.
14 it's a family member who let me down, a friend who betrayed a confidence, or a difficult workmate, the words 15my fridge guides me. It's not always easy to forgive. I've been able to shed a lot of resentment over the years by focusing on my mantra(咒语).
Tom and Jerry
Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse are two of the most popular cartoon characters in the world. In the short cartoons, Tom is always trying to catch Jerry, although he never has any success. Almost every cartoon ends with Tom in trouble and Jerry laughing at him. The stories are full of fun and have a long history.
William Hanna and Joseph Barbera both worked for MGM in the late 1930s. Their boss told them to make funny cartoons for cinemas. Together they thought of the idea of a cat trying to catch a mouse. They thought it would be funny if the mouse was clever and always get the cat into trouble.
The first Tom and Jerry cartoon was shown in cinemas in 1940. It was a great success, so their boss told Hanna and Barbera to make more. Over the next seventeen years, they made a huge number of Tom and Jerry cartoons. Most of them are around seven minutes long.
In total, Hanna and Barbera made 114 Tom and Jerry cartoons. The cartoons were so good that they won a number of awards. The famous cat and mouse are still popular today, as the cartoons are still shown on the television around the world now.
A couple had a son eleven years after they married. They were a loving couple and the boy was the apple of their eye. When the boy was around four years old, one day the father was very tired after work so he asked his wife to pick up their son. The mother, who was very busy in the kitchen, totally forgot about it.
Later the boy lost his way in the street. When the son was found missing, the mother hurried to look for him, but she didn't find him. The mother felt very sad and didn't know how to face her husband.
When the father went to the police station after hearing that the son was missing, he looked at his wife and said just four words. What do you think the four words were? The husband just said," I love you, darling."
The son was missing. If she had picked him up earlier, this would not have happened. There was no point in blaming(责备) anyone. His wife had also lost her only child. What his wife needed at that moment was comfort and understanding from her husband. That was what the husband gave his wife. Several weeks later, with the help of the police, the couple finally found their lost son. The family's relationship became stronger over that time.
Sometimes we spend lots of time asking who is to blame. We miss many chances to give each other support and let each other feel the warmth of human relationships. Get rid of all your unwillingness to forgive(原谅), selfishness and fears and you will find the world is much more wonderful.
