Step back in time with these reminders, symbolic places, of the Britain that once was ruled by Queen Victoria.
Blists Hill Victorian Town, Shropshire
Visitors to this Victorian town could happily wave goodbye to their smartphones, cars and almost any modern convenience. Walk through the gates and enjoy the smell of freshly baked bread and carbolic soap, hear the sounds of steam engines, a horse and cart.
November and December are the perfect months to visit, as the town lays on its annual Christmas celebrations.
The Workhouse, Southwell, Nottinghamshire
Experience the life inside without enduring the punishing conditions, with a tour of the best-preserved workhouse in Britain, serving as a place of labour.
Life here for Victorian Britain's poorest was incredibly tough, with the 160 inmates spending their days pulling rope apart by hand or turning the mill, but today it's a peaceful site and an abundant vegetable crop, with heritage varieties.
Grand Hotel, Scarborough, North Yorkshire
The hotel was built in the peak of this domestic train tourism boom. In 1845 the town was linked to York by rail, a development that brought a flood of holidaymakers. When it opened, it was one of the largest in Europe.
Visitors can still book in at the hotel today and enjoy the same traditional seaside pastimes as their ancestors—watching Punch and Judy shows, eating ice creams or riding along the coastal path on donkeys.
Tower Ballroom, Blackpool
Another immensely popular Victorian seaside town, Blackpool, received a sudden increase in visitors following the erection of the Blackpool Tower in 1894. In 1899, the Tower Ballroom was opened, designed to rival the nearby Empress Ballroom. The specially designed dancefloor attracted dancers from all over the world, and even the most working-class locals could experience a night of luxury.
Today, visitors still flood to dance in its grand interior or enjoy afternoon tea under the dreamy painted ceiling.
China has successfully landed its rover on Mars, becoming the second country in history to have a rover on the red planet.
The rover, Zhurong, named after a god of fire in Chinese mythology, landed Saturday morning at the pre-selected area in Utopia Planitia on Mars. The six-wheel solar-powered Zhurong rover weighs about 240 kilograms (529 pounds) and carries six scientific instruments. It will be later released from the lander for a three-month mission in search of life on Mars' surface.
Tianwen-1, whose name means “Quest for Heavenly Truth,” will relay its signal to the rover during its mission and then conduct a global survey of the planet for one Martian year. It hopes to gather important information about the Martian soil, geological structure, environment and atmosphere, and to search for signs of water. The probe has spent three months in orbit scanning the landing area before releasing the rover to the surface, and sent back its first photo of the planet from more than a million kilometers (621,371 miles) away.
Tianwen-1 was launched by a Long March 5 rocket from the Wenchang space launch center in Hainan on July 23 last year, and spent seven months on the way to Mars before entering its orbit in February. “The probe is going to orbit, land and release a rover all on the very first try, and cooperate with an orbiter in observation,” the scientific team behind Tianwen-1 said before the rover's landing. “No planetary missions have ever been implemented in this way”.
Tianwen-1 is one of three international Mars missions launched last summer due to an alignment between Earth and Mars on the same side of the sun, making for a more efficient journey to the red planet. Unlike the US and China missions, the UAE probe is not intended to land on Mars—just study the planet from orbit.
Less than three months after a gunman walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, killing 17 students and teachers, seniors on Saturday night will celebrate their prom.
Still, the Parkland high school prom will be far from ordinary. Not only will it be held under tight security, but there will be a tribute honoring the lives of the four seniors killed during the February 14 tragedy.
With some students still saddened and emotions running high, local businesses, vendors and community members have come together to offer products and services at cost or even free of charge, in hopes of relieving students of their burdens- even if just for a night. The event should involve all the hallmarks of a typical American prom: eye-grabbing decorations, lots of flowers and a dance floor packed with students dressed to the nines.
The biggest contribution came from the Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, which has donated a ballroom and catering for the evening. The money saved allowed the prom planning committee to charge as little as $30 per ticket- down from the usual of about $100.
Other businesses also stepped up, offering hairstyling, makeup, photography and even prom dresses. To help ease students' pain, Gabriela Miller, an alumni and salon and spa owner, asked her staff to donate their time and services to girls preparing for the prom. They enthusiastically agreed. On Saturday, Miller and dozens of beauty experts from surrounding communities will do hair and makeup for more than 230 girls.
Apart from business, neighbors also did their part. Shawn Rosenthal, who lives a few miles south of Parkland, felt so moved by the attack that she organized a collection to provide free prom dresses to senior girls. Within days, with the help of her friends, they'd collected more than 100 prom dresses of all colors, shapes and sizes. They caught the eye of the Alumni Association, which was also gathering dresses, and pooled their efforts.
Such a community effort could help the students “heal for a moment.”
It was eleven years before I returned to England. It was an evening in December, an hour or so after dark, when I quietly pushed open the kitchen door of the house on the marshes (沼泽). There, smoking his pipe by the fire, was Joe, only a little gray. And opposite him, sitting on my own old little stool, was — a little Pip.
Joe jumped up to welcome me back and kept touching me to make sure it was really me. But the little boy hung back. Biddy rushed in, crying, and kissed me.
After a few days, young Pip — for he had been named after me — and I became friends. We went for walks on the marshes, and I showed him my family's tombstones. To understand his thoughts and feelings, I had only to remember my own at his age in this place. By the time I left, Pip was as attached to me as I had been to Joe when I was young. He stood by the forge and waved and waved until I was out of sight.
Thoughts of Estella came rushing to me. Before leaving for London, I decided to visit the site of Miss Havisham's house. Nothing of the burned-out house remained; only the garden was there, pushing wildly into the space once occupied by the house. I went through the old gate, no longer locked, and sat on a stone bench. Thoughts of Estella came rushing to me. I had heard that her life with Bentley Drummle had been most unhappy, unhappy enough to cause her to leave him. And I had heard that he had been killed in a riding accident soon after. But that had been two years ago, and perhaps she had since remarried. I wandered farther back in the garden, which looked stripped and like desert in the winter air. The figure of a woman stood pitifully in the moonlight, and, hearing my footsteps, she turned. We recognized one another at the same time.
Playing basketball requires natural skill. if you properly condition your body, practice with the right drills, and master the mental aspects of the game. Good basketball players put in the effort and training that it takes to get better on the court, and they have the personality characteristics that coaches appreciate.
Some experts believe the ability to handle the ball well is the most important skill in the game. You shouldn't have to think too hard about dribbling the ball if you practice a lot. A good way to improve this skill is through dribbling drills.
Master your passing ability. Passing is a skill that basketball players must master. One is a chest pass in which you throw the ball to your teammate without it bouncing. The second is a bounce pass, in which you bounce the ball once when throwing it to your teammate. This is the hardest pass for a defender to stop.
Better your shooting. The shooters get a lot of the glory, and they are obviously critical to the game. But you don't want to be in a situation where people are blocking your shots or you miss a lot of them.
Condition your body. Speed, quickness, verticality, strength, and stamina can turn any skill deadly just by simply giving you the advantage over an opponent physically. They are designed for basketball offensive players to condition their body, not just exercises like you might do for fun. Coaches look for players who want to work hard to achieve good conditioning, like who has an explosive first step or who can jump 2 feet in the air.
A. That will land you on the bench.
B. Improve your ball handling skills.
C. There are two basic ways to pass.
D. But you can have enjoyment from it.
E. They are far from adequate for a win.
F. You need to perform enough practice drills.
G. But you can become a good basketball player.

Dear Jim,
How is everything going with you? I know you are very interest in traditional Chinese music. So I'm writing to invite you attend a concert of Erhu music to be held on this Saturday evening.
Here are some information about the concert. First of all, the Erhu is one of the most famous traditional musical instrument in China, which has simple two strings but makes a pleasing sound. The concert will be giving from 7pm to 9pm at the City Theatre by Ma Xiaohui, a famous Erhu performer. You'll be able to enjoy some classic pieces, but I am sure you will fall in love with it.
I hope you'll seize a good chance and go with me. I'm looking forward to your reply soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
