"Are you listening, Simon?" Simon's teacher asked. Simon smiled and shook his head. He hardly listened in class. Talking was so much better. He just wanted to be heard.
That evening, Simon felt a little bit sick. His throat really hurt. He had ice cream and hot chocolate to make it feel better. The next morning, when he opened his mouth to say "Good morning, " nothing came out. "Honey, you've lost your voice, " said his mom. "Can I stay home?" He tried to ask, but words didn't come out. Instead, his mother checked him for a fever and pronounced him good to go to school, even if he couldn't talk. How awful!
When his classmates talked to him at school, he just shrugged (耸肩). By the time the bell rang, almost everyone was looking at him as if he had grown a third eye. Simon sat in class, watching others talk to each other in groups. In math class, he could hold up fingers if the answer was less than 10, but that wasn't fun. He decided to try to pay attention. You know what?It wasn't that bad. He could easily finish his homework that night. It gave him extra game time because his work was all done. The next day, even though his voice was coming back, he stayed quiet again. The third day, he could talk fine, but he listened and raised his hand to speak.
If you had billions of dollars, would you donate almost all of it to charity? Well, that's what Mark Zuckerburg, CEO and founder of Facebook, just said he would do.
Zuckerburg and his wife Priscilla Chan promised to give 90% of their Facebook shares to society. Right now that is about $45 billion, and they plan to donate the money to things like science and education.
Many billionaires have done similar things. Bill Gates, creator of Microsoft, made The Giving Pledge, an activity in which billionaires promise donate more than half of their wealth to charities. This started in 2010, and now 139 people from 15 countries joined it.
But giving back and helping others isn't just for big billionaires. People like Zuckerberg, and Gates may have more to give, but people with less are doing it, too.
Especially around the holidays, people want to do their part and give back to people who are less lucky than them. Schools may have food collections where people bring a few food items, and together they can make a big donation to places like homeless people's homes.
People also host special events like concerts of runs to be creative while raising money. Regular people donate whatever they can to US charities like the United Way and the American Red Cross.
Then these charities are able to help US communities in different ways like education, health and improving the lives of the poor. These individual donations come together to make a big difference.
What should we do if one of our classmates suddenly falls ill or gets injured? Here are some steps you should follow. But always remember to seek medical care after first aid if the injury is serious.
Broken bones (骨头) :
1)Take away clothing from the injured area.
2)Use an ice pack.
3)Don't move the injured body part while waiting for the doctor to arrive.
Animal bites (咬伤) :
1)Wash the bite area with soap and water;pack the injured area with a clean cloth if it is bleeding.
2)If the bleeding has stopped, cover the area with a bandage and take the person to the hospital.
3)Make sure you remember what kind of animal it is so the doctor can find the right way to treat them as soon as possible.
Fainting (昏厥) :
1)Have him or her lie with feet lifted a little. Don't move the body if you think there might be injuries from the fall.
2)Make sure he or she can breathe and let in fresh air.
3)Wipe the person's face with s cool towel.
Nosebleeds:
1)Have the person sit up with his or her head tilted(倾斜)forward a little. Do not have the person tilt their head back because this may cause heavy breathing or coughing.
2)Pinch(捏) the lower part of the nose (just below the bony part) for at least 10 minutes.
A smart diet,a healthy life
No matter how old your kids are,you can take steps to improve a healthy diet and to encourage good eating habits. Here are five tips for parents.
Tip One:
Family meals are nice for both parents and kids. Children like to guess what they are going to have and parents get the chance to introduce new foods to children. Parents can also use the mealtime as a chance to talk with their kids about their life.
Tip Two:
Kids, especially younger ones, will eat mostly what can get at home. That's why it's important to have enough healthy snacks, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, yogurt and whole﹣grain biscuits.
Tip Three:
The best way for you to encourage healthy eating habits is to eat well yourself. Kids will follow the adults they see every day. By eating fruits and vegetables and staying away from fast food and sweet drinks, you are sending the right message.
Tip Four:
Parents might find themselves shouting at children to get them to have healthy foods in front of them. This in fact can make children dislike what they are asked to eat. You need to work a bit on different cooking ways.
Tip Five:
Most kids will enjoy making the decision about food. Talk to them about making choices and planning a healthy meal. It can help them to make good decisions on their own about the foods they want to eat.

My class was trying to come up with a way to raise money for homeless children, but we couldn' t agree on anything.
"Let's continue1 lunch, " our teacher, Mr Moony, said. We all agreed but Anthony said he couldn't have lunch with us because he had to go to the2. He had a terrible toothache these days. When he put things into his bag, I saw a picture of a dragon and the words "art show" on the back of his3.
When we finished 4. Mr Moony asked what ideas we had. I shouted, "Art show!"
To my surprise, 5disagreed with it. I felt so good. I didn't say who really had the6at first.
A few days later, our big art show came. My classmates7 many cool paintings. But everyone8that the most wonderful one was Anthony's—a beautiful dragon. That painting made me remember Anthony' s notebook. I'd never told anyone9 the idea of the art show came from. I was feeling so bad about it that I could no longer10 the show.
11I told my classmates the art show wasn't my idea!In fact, Anthony12it.
I ran to Anthony and said sorry to him.
"It's OK, " Anthony laughed. "I was a little13 at first. But then I thought that14 the idea was helpful, it didn't matter whose idea it was. "
I would never forget the15. It taught me to learn to apologize(道歉) and not to copy others' ideas.
Chen Zixu is a retired (退休) worker. Over the past 23 years,he (raise)11 million yuan to help 1 ,955 students from poor families in Liling,Hunan Province.
