Do you know 5G? It is the fifth generation(代)of mobile network technology. These new networks are coming.
China just issued commercial licenses(发放商用牌照)for 5G on June 6. This means that China's telecom companies were soon able to offer 5G networks for mobile phone user.
Each mobile network generation is faster and more powerful than the one before it. 1G let us talk to each other. 2G let us send messages. 3G gave us data and the Internet. And 4G made all of these things faster. What's special about 5G?
5G has a very short delay between sending and receiving information. Now, 4G takes about 100 to 200 milliseconds(毫秒)to send and receive data. But 5G will get it down to 1 millisecond or less—this is almost real-time.
This big change will not only make our mobile Internet faster, but also deeply change our lives. Read on to find out how.
5G+entertainment(娱乐)
5G networks are about 100 times faster than 4G. This means you can download a movie in seconds using 5G.
Also, virtual reality(VR) games will become more popular with 5G. The short delay of 5G will make the games feel even more real.
5G+transportation
5G will also bring us safer self-driving cars. These cars can send signals(信号) to each other. They also talk to traffic lights and road sensors(传感器). 5G will allow cars to react even faster than human drivers.
5G+smart homes
5G also makes the Internet of things possible. Internet of things is a large network that connects everything to the Internet. Smart homes are part of it.
For example, your toaster can automatically(自动地) start making breakfast after your alarm rings. And if its sensor feels the air becoming dry, a smart sprinkler (洒水装置) could water your plants by itself.
Thanksgiving Day is always on a Thursday. It is the start of the holiday shopping season, and it has been the busiest shopping day of the year in the US since 2005.
Most stores offer big sales on Black Friday. They open their doors very early in the morning and try to attract shoppers with low prices. Some things like TVs and clothes are much cheaper than usual. They hope that shoppers will buy more gifts while they are in the store.
Black Friday is a great time for shopping. However, there are problems. Each store has only a few, so the goods are in great need and people stand in long lines to get them. They may wait three or four hours before a store opens, but not everyone can get one. Some people leave, disappointed.
This situation makes people worried. Some Black Friday events have been crazy. There have been fights over toys among shoppers. Some workers have been hurt by large crowd. Still, if you want to go, you will expect large crowds and a bit of pushing.
So where does the name "Black Friday" come from? It was first used in Philadelphia in the 1950s. The police called this day Black Friday because of the heavy traffic it caused. In the 1960s, stores tried to change the name into "Big Friday". It didn't stick. The name "Black Friday" continued to spread across the country. It seems that it is here to stay. It is even spreading to other parts of the world. Stores have held Black Friday events in the UK, Australia, and Brazil since 2012. In Mexico, stores offer a weekend of low price every year. They call it "El Buen Fin", which means "the good weekend" in Spanish. I guess people everywhere like to buy things on sale.
A. The biggest one is that there are not enough low-priced things. B. Now people all over the country take place in Black Friday events. C. The day after it has been known as Black Friday. D. But most Black Friday events are safe and fun. E. Stores may even lose money on these things. |
Ancient Embroidery in Danger
Embroidery(刺绣)is an important art form in Chinese culture. In the past, people embroidered on handkerchiefs, bed covers, tablecloths and dresses. Girls would embroider on a sachet(香囊) as a gift for their lovers. The most famous embroidery styles are Su embroidery from Suzhou, Shu embroidery from Sichuan, Xiang embroidery from Hunan and Yue embroidery from Guangdong.
Shu embroidery is the oldest of the four. It is known for its smooth needlework and beautiful colors. It dates back to the Han Dynasty. People sold it to other countries through the South Silk Road. It used to be a fashion in ancient Rome, according to China Daily.
Embroidery takes time and patience. It might take as long as a whole day to finish just 10 cm of embroidery. By the 1970s, Sichuan had as many as 5,000 embroiderers. But since modern machines can make cheaper embroidery products today, fewer people buy handmade Shu embroidery products. There are also very few young embroiderers, so the skill is in danger of dying out. To protect the skill, Shu embroidery was added to China's intangible cultural heritage list(非物质文化遗产名录) in 2006.
Meng Dezhi has been making Shu embroidery for 40 years. She used to work at Chengdu Shu Embroidery Factory. But in 2005, the factory went broke and Meng lost her job.
Wanting to save the art, Meng decided to rent(租) her own place and teach Shu embroidery to others. It is not an easy job.
The work is hard and the pay is low. Not many people want to learn this skill. But Meng is trying to save it by teaching in different universities and communities. She believes that Shu embroidery stands for thousands of years of Sichuan culture and should be saved.
In countries like the United Kingdom, the USA and Australia, people speak English as a first language. But they don't speak exactly the English. English sounds different in these countries because people use different (pronounce) and there are different words for some things. For example, (America) don't say "football", they say "soccer", and they say "movie" rather than "film". In some countries, there are a lot of different languages, so people use English the official language.
In countries where English isn't a first language, English (speak) as a foreign language. People want to study English because it's a(n) (nation) language; it's in films, magazines and pop songs. A lot of people, especially scientists and business people, use English when (work).
About 80% of the information on the Internet (be) in English. A lot of people communicate on the Internet in English, too. Some people write different kind of English when they communicate in (chat) rooms. They use words like "ruok" "thnx" and "cul8r". These words are faster to write than "Are you OK?", "Thanks" and "See you later"!
