Every year, the biggest and the best garden designers get together to create the Chelsea Flower Show, providing inspiration, trendsetting ideas and a glimpse of how our gardens might look next year.

    On Trend: Green garden

Sustainable gardens have become a big trend in our towns and cities. Joe Swift inspired gardeners with his gold-winning design for the Homebase Teenage Cancer Trust that featured drought-buster (治理) architectural planting.

It could cope with even the driest conditions typically found in places where water is precious. His large pools of water had a cooling effect on people and plants.

    On Trend: Space-saving Herbs

The Brewin Dolphin garden designed by Cleve West and Steve Swatton followed the Arts and Craft tradition, showing the beautiful strong lines of neatly beech (山毛榉) among its soft herbs planting. It proved to be a style that has never gone out of fashion.

You don't need a large garden to have a piece of topiary (树木造型). These evergreens, which can be boxed or grown in pots, are easy to cut into shapes, such as balls, cubes and pyramids.

    On Trend: Rhododendrons (杜鹃花) Woodland

Chris Beardshaw's gold-winning design was packed with rhododendrons woodland bushes. It paid tribute (致敬) to Furzey Gardens in Hampshire, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.

Rhododendrons might not be the trendiest choice but they deserve a comeback.

    On Trend: Drought Buster

The Herbert Smith garden for Water Aid was inspired by the work of the charity and the transforming power of clean water.

Using water wisely is today's issue, so invest in water butts (积水桶) to collect rainwater and gather waste water from baths, sinks and washing machines.

    1. (1) Who can inspire those having a garden with limited space?
      A . Cleve West and Steve Swatton. B . Joe Swift C . Herbert Smith. D . Chris Beardshaw.
    2. (2) What does Furzey Gardens feature?
      A . Evergreens in shapes. B . Clean water transforming. C . Large pools. D . Rhododendrons woodland.
    3. (3) What do the designs of Joe Swift and Herbert Smith have in common?
A . They are the trendiest choices. B . They attach great importance to saving water. C . They promoted the balance of environment. D . They are gold-winning designs.

One of the greatest contributors to the first Oxford English Dictionary was also one of its most unusual. In 1879, Oxford University in England asked Prof. James Murray to serve as editor for what was to be the most ambitious dictionary in the history of the English language. It would include every English word possible and would give not only the definition but also the history of the word and quotations showing how it was used.

This was a huge task, so Murray had to find volunteers from Britain, the United States, and the British colonies to search every newspaper, magazine, and book ever written in English. Hundreds of volunteers responded, including William Chester Minor. Dr. Minor was an American surgeon who had served in the Civil War and was now living in England. He gave his address as "Broadmoor, Crowthorne, Berkshire, "50 miles from Oxford.

Minor joined the army of volunteers sending words and quotations to Murray. Over the next 17 years, he became one of the staff's most valued contributors.

But he was also a mystery. In spite of many invitations, he would always decline to visit Oxford. So in 1897, Murray finally decided to travel to Crowthorne himself. When he arrived, he found Minor locked in a book-lined cell at the Broadmoor Asylum for the Criminally Insane.

Murray and Minor became friends, sharing their love of words. Minor continued contributing to the dictionary, sending in more than 10, 000 submissions in 20 years. Murray continued to visit Minor regularly, sometimes taking walks with him around the asylum grounds. In 1910, Minor left Broadmoor for an asylum in his native America. Murray was at the port to wave goodbye to his remarkable friend.

Minor died in 1920, seven years before the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was completed. The 12 volumes defined 414, 825 words, and thousands of them were contributions from a very scholarly and devoted asylum patient.

    1. (1) According to the text, the first Oxford English Dictionary
A . came out before Minor died B . was edited by an American volunteer C . included the English words invented by Murray D . was intended to be the most ambitious English dictionary
    2. (2) How did Dr. Minor contribute to the dictionary?

    3. (3) Why did Dr. Minor refuse to visit Oxford?
A . He was shut in an asylum. B . He disliked traveling. C . He was busy writing a book. D . He lived far from Oxford.
    4. (4) Which of the following best describes Dr. Minor?
A . Cautious and friendly. B . Unusual and scholarly. C . Friendly and determined. D . Considerate and optimistic.

Kids always have many doubts like: why do people have to die? Are mistakes always bad? Can you be happy and sad at the same time? Children often say that they lie awake at night thinking about things like why the world has the colors as it does, the nature of time and whether dreams are real. These are not the kinds of questions that can be answered by googling them or asking Siri.

When children raise these questions, adults tend to respond with explanations that try to resolve the issue, at least temporarily. It's natural to attempt to comfort a kid who is feeling puzzled by the world. But simple explanations may not be what the child wants. Sometimes, kids simply want to talk about their questions and thoughts.

Most kids start wondering about big questions almost as soon as they learn to speak, and they continue to think about them throughout childhood. Being full of curiosity about things that most adults take for granted, children all over the world are wide open to the mysteries in human life. But as they get older, kids ask questions less and less.

While children do need adults' help and guidance, parents don't always have to be in position of the experts providing the answers. Thinking with children about their bigger questions can make way for a more mutual kind of interactions. Because these kinds of questions tend not to have settled and final answers, discussions about them allow parents and children to wonder together. In this way, adults feel less pressure to be the experts.

Most of children have few long-held assumptions about bigger questions. Kids often suggest original and creative ways of looking at them. Talking with kids about what they are thinking without always feeling compelled to offer answers can help them explore their own concerns and ideas.

    1. (1) How will adults probably react when kids ask questions according to the text?
A . Attempt to raise their curiosity. B . Help surf the Internet for answers. C . Give them simple explanations. D . Praise their courage and bravery.
    2. (2) What can we learn about kids' asking questions from Paragraph 3?
A . It needs adults' guidance. B . It makes a difference to their speech. C . It helps improve their academic performance. D . It starts from a very young age.
    3. (3) Which can best replace the underlined word "compelled" in the last paragraph?
      A . Respected. B . Forced. C . Inspired. D . Convinced
    4. (4) What does the text mainly discuss?
A . How parents handle kids' questions. B . When parents join in kids' questions. C . Why children ask big questions. D . What kinds of questions children raise.

Coaches have always taken into account the condition of players when scheduling training sessions. Now with the help of artificial intelligence, they can calculate more precisely the probability that individual athletes will get injured during the next match, the next week or the next month. "We follow a team for an entire season, recording GPS data during training and matches, "Rossi explains. He then uses machine learning to try to detect patterns. "This gives us the probability that a player will get injured in the next days or next weeks."

These data reveal an athlete's workload-how often they train and how intensely. Just enough training can pave the way to medals, but too much puts pressure on the body and can lead to injuries.

Sport is gradually entering a new era, in which artificial intelligence might act as an assistant coach. Algorithms (算法) could enable a teenager to train smarter and avoid a career-ending injury, or help a professional athlete to compete for a few years longer. But the technology's success depends, in part, on the ability of scientists to convince coaches to include data in their decision process.

The teams that McHugh has worked with have seen a reduction in injuries of between 5% and 40%. Yet not every coach is happy to join forces with AI. "Coaches sometimes don't feel good, because it seems like trying to substitute the human element," Rossi says. But in reality, data is only a tool. "The interpretation of the results, the change of the training load, is done by coaches," he says.

McHugh agrees that people have to make the final call. "Once the injury probability for an athlete on a given day is output from an injury model, the athlete or coach must then decide whether the predicted risk is acceptable or not, usually depending on the context, " he says. There might be a big game that day, and the layer might be especially important to the learn. "Even though the predicted injury probability be as high as 70%, the coco may be willing to take that chance," he says.

    1. (1) What can be learned about GPS data?
A . GPS data use machine learning to detect patterns. B . GPS data decide athletes' workload. C . GPS data provide useful information for training athletes. D . GPS data are collected during the final match.
    2. (2) What makes the technology's success possible according to the text?
      A . Data accuracy. B . Coaches' acceptance C . Athletes' training time. D . Scientists' judgement.
    3. (3) What does the last paragraph intend to tell us?
A . It is people who make the final decision. B . AI will take the place of coaches. C . AI has advantages over people. D . AI in sports has a bright future.
    4. (4) What can be a suitable title for the text?
A . Coaches or AI B . AI, the Future Coach C . Athletes Do Wonders D . Predicting Injuries with Tech

The Best Sleeping Positions for Improving Your Health

Most of us spend between 6 and 8 hours asleep every night, so it makes sense that the position we lie in during this period can have a big effect on our health. , and which ones should we try to avoid?

    Lie on the stomach

Believe it or not, this is the worst position to sleep in. Lying this way night after night can cause aches and pains as your spine (脊柱) is not in a natural position. It is also not good for possible wrinkles. The only good factor for sleeping on your stomach is that it can decrease snoring (打鼾).

Sleeping on your side is overall a pretty good position health-wise. It keeps your spine in a natural position which is great for preventing neck and back pain. It can improve heart circulation and blood flow, and it can also reduce acid reflux (逆流). So this position is specially recommended to pregnant women, particularly if they lie on their left sides.

    Sleep on your back

. It allows your head, neck and spine to be kept in a more natural position, reducing any potential pains and aches. Wrinkles aren't a worry with this position as your face is not pressed into your pillow all night. People think it is the best position to sleep in although it may cause loud snoring and heavy breathing.

    C. What time do you sleep every night
