I started out my career as an editor for a travel magazine. I didn't really mind the work, but I wanted something more challenging. My sister sent me some details about a content management position in a digital reading company. The job was a seemingly perfect mix of my skills and interests, so I jumped at it.
However, soon after I joined the company, its model changed to focus on education, and everything about my position changed. I was asked to take on the completely different roles of selling the products to teachers and training people. I had no experience in sales, training or education. On top of that, I'm an introvert(内向的人). I felt more than a little outside my comfort zone.
I knew I wanted to grow as an individual and make a serious impact on the company. I told myself that everything feels overwhelming(令人不知所措的) at first and I should at least try. In a way, I felt like I didn't have a choice. I knew jumping out of the nest was the right thing for me, even though it felt pretty awful.
I was fortunate to be surrounded by very helpful people, both at work and at home. My best friend reminded me that I had taken huge leaps of faith in the past and told me I would pull through just fine. It also helped that my boss seemed to have more confidence in my capabilities than I did. She never asked if I thought I could do it; she only asked if I was interested in trying.
I spent hours researching my company's products. I asked lots of questions and spoke to so many teachers and there were soon more good experiences than difficult ones. I looked for opportunities to put in extra effort. The more I did, the better I felt.
Over time, I discovered that the job was something I could do and liked doing. It was incredibly rewarding to see the company grow and know that I had something to do with its success. Sure, I made mistakes and took on more than I could handle. But I also learned that it's important to take risks and accept new opportunities, even when you're not sure whether you'll do well. I don't think there's anything worse than failing because you refuse to even try. I'm so glad I tried, and know I'll do it again.
Since 1964, colleges and universities in the U. S. have used Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL, to measure an international applicant's(申请人的)level of English. Universities in English-speaking European countries began using the International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, in 1989. These two tests have been the main choices for English ability testing in higher education admissions for international students until now.
In recent years, several companies have developed new English language tests that are low-cost and easy to use. And they aim to do more than just offer greater choices in the admissions process.
Founded in 2012, Duolingo creates software that teaches users many different languages, including English. In 2014, the company launched its own test of English language ability.
Jennifer Dewar works with Duolingo, helping to develop the test. She formerly worked as an admissions official at Washington University in St. Louis, Misouri. The school is one of hundreds of colleges, universities and other organizations in and outside the U. S. that now accept the test results for international admissions into their study programs.
Dewar says Duolingo created the test to lower the barriers to higher education for people worldwide, especially those in developing countries.
TOEFL and the IELTS cost about $ 300. They are given in a limited number of centers around the world. Some test-takers have to travel to take the tests, adding to the costs. Duolingo offers its test entirely over the Internet for $ 49. All test-takers need is access to a computer with a microphone, listening device and self-facing camera.
TOEFL, the IELTS and Duolingo measure a person's English reading, listening, speaking and writing abilities. But it takes about 45 minutes to complete a Duolingo test, compared to three or four hours for TOEFL or the IELTS. It is possible because Duolingo uses artificial intelligence(人工智能)to adapt to test-takers' abilities, using fewer questions to measure their skills.
Chinese A-level has overtaken(超过) German for the first time, as it becomes the UK's third most popular language.
This year 3,334 students take Chinese A-level, compared to 3,058 taking German. While entries(参加总人数) for Chinese have increased by 8. 6 percent since last year, German entries have reduced by 16. 5 percent. French remains the most popular modem language followed by Spanish, but both have seen a fall 1 in entries compared to last year by eight and four percent respectively.
Barnaby Lenon, chair of the Independent Schools Council(ISC), said that although pupils used to be told "It will really help your career if you learn German", this is no longer the case.
"In the 1960s, 70s and even the 80s, pupils were strongly encouraged to study German because of the importance of the German economy. Although it is still strong, that argument has faded, and China has appeared in the last 25 years as the fastest growing economy in the world. "
Mr Lenon, former headmaster of Harrow School, said the rise in Chinese A-level entries is partly driven by private schools, many of which have invested in the subject in recent years. "It is not the case that a large number of state schools are now teaching Chinese A-level. They are not," he said. Many of the entries will be Chinese native speakers and he added that independent schools have attracted "large numbers" of Chinese pupils in recent years.
Mark Herbert, director of schools and skills at the British Council, welcomed the rise in Chinese A-level entries. He said, "Our research shows that Mandarin will be one of the most important languages for the UK's future and global standing - but we mustn't neglect Spanish, French and German which will still be vital for post-Brexit(脱欧). "
Nick Gibb, the schools minister, said, "An outward-looking global nation needs a new generation of young people comfortable with the language and culture of our overseas trading partners."
You put a great deal of effort into reaching college of your dreams. It's time to get started. But what's next? The beginning of college life can be an exciting but awkward time. Follow these tips to adapt to your new life rapidly and make the most of your college experience.
To save time and money, use the college's bus system. Taking the bus to school is quick, easy and free in most college towns. It's also a good way to be environmentally aware.

Never look on college life as endless parties and social activities. There is a whole lot more to college if you're serious about graduating.
Be aware that your living environment can largely affect your studies. If the dorm(寝室)doesn't suit you, consider living at home with your family or renting your own apartment. Find a quiet area, like the library, to study. Alternatively, buy some headphones that block out noise.
Make healthy food choices and watch what you eat. Avoid the foods that are processed or high in sugar. The "freshman 15" is real, which refers to many college students gain at least 15 pounds during the freshman year.
While electives(选修课程) can be helpful when you figure out your major, you shouldn't entirely rely on them. Clubs and other organizations exist around. Get involved. Make sure, though, that you still have time to study. Having too much on your plate can hurt your grades.
A. Be mindful of your diet. B. Take relaxed attitudes to your diet. C. Don't take part in too many after-class activities. D. Save pennies on books by waiting until class starts. E. We went out to dinner tonight to celebrate my daughter's beautiful performance. We don't do this often because of1budget.
I noticed a very2mom come in with her three children, maybe about age 4 or 5. She looked like she had just3work. She sat with her children quietly taking care of them and4all their needs. Then I noticed as soon as the last dish arrived, she took a5of her food in a hurry and then one of the6had to go to the bathroom. They all left the table and she7them - so lovingly and patiently - especially after what may have been a long day at work. She was still wearing some kind8.
I9myself from the table and quietly went to the hostess stand. I10$15 to the waitress and said, "Can you put this anonymously(匿名地)towards that mom of three children's11? I am hoping it will12at least the children's meals." The waitress had a lovely smile and accepted the13. I didn't stand around14as 1 didn't want anyone- even my own family - to15what was going on. I wanted it to be completely anonymous.
For the16of my meal, I did all I could not to pay any more attention17to the table, as I didn't want her to suspect that it was me that had18their dinner.
It feels so19to live in this type of world, full of love and20, instead of anger and sadness.

The Spring Festival, also knowing as the Chinese New Year, is a tradition festival in China. The Spring Festival usually falls in late January or early February. People celebrate them in different ways.

On first day of the New Year, people usual wear new clothes and visit their relatives. They said "Happy New Year!" to each other, which is a good way to express their best wish for the coming year.
