Who says you have to stay indoors when the temperatures drop? Here are favorite places to explore this winter.
Athens, Greece
In Athens, temperatures stay around the mid-20s every November, so have a trip to the Parthenon and Acropolis. A full afternoon is also necessary for exploring the Museum of Cycladic Art and its exhibitions—recently it has hosted Picasso's.
In the streets of the Pysrri district is a hidden hole in the wall, from which one can go down to the basement restaurant, Diporto.
Huaraz, Peru
To some, Peru gives people images of students in printed shorts on a tour of Machu Picchu. There's obviously so much more to do in the UNESCO World Heritage (遗产) site. Any hike through the surrounding Huascaran National Park will make you feel like you've stepped into The Lord of the Rings.
April and November are considered "shoulder season", which means fewer clear days but you can enjoy the trails (路线) with fewer people.
Edinburgh, UK
Yes, it's probably going to be freezing cold. Hot coffee steam up in a pleasing, romantic fashion in cafes. People can take a few minutes' walk from the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
For simple Scottish dishes there's neighborhood inn, the Little Chartroom. And the Sheep Heid Inn has been long enough to have served Mary, Queen of Scots. In the eight bedrooms at the 18th century Rock House, each is a mixture of ancient details and current fashion.
Valletta, Malta
Flights from the UK to Malta's capital are only around £30, making it one of the best destinations for a November trip. This tiny city has a temperature of 17 or so and has changed itself into a year-round city break with artistic cafes, hotels and newly opened galleries—Muza opened last year and houses the former National Gallery collection.
It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly my mother will push the conversation into the Third World War. She'll talk about my lack(缺乏;没有) of bright future because I don't plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, I don't want to do any job related to science, either. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major(主修;专业) in English, she nearly had a heart attack.
"Why can't you be like my co-worker's son?" she shouts all the time. Her co-worker's son received a four-year scholarship(奖学金) and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer (工程师). I don't know what to say except that I simply can't be like Mr. Perfect as I've called the unnamed co-worker's son. I can't be like him. I am the type of the person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve something because of loving it, not because of fame or salary (薪水).
I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I've seen my mother struggle to raise me on her small salary and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 am and usually comes back home around 5:00 pm or even 6:00 pm.
However, I want her to know that by becoming a doctor, it doesn't mean I'll be successful. I would rather follow my dreams and create my own future.
Walker didn't realize the dangers of e-cigarettes last December when he bought his first one. "I thought it was cool," says Walker, who moved to Florida Atlantic University a month later. Within weeks, given the pressures of adjusting to a new campus, he was smoking a pack or more a day. "After about a week and a half," he says, "I'd get nervous and anxious if I didn't have it."
In early March, Walker went to a hospital emergency room near campus complaining of chest pain, fever and feeling sick. "Eleven days later my chest hurt so bad that I couldn't even sit straight," says Walker. X-rays showed that Walker had what looked like pneumonia (肺炎) in his left lung. Within days, Walker was put on a respirator (呼吸器) and later sent by air to another hospital. "He was dying," says his mom, Candy, a nurse.
It took seven days for doctors to confirm that Walker's infection was caused by the adenovirus (腺病毒). But they were at a loss to explain how the virus had nearly killed an otherwise strong and healthy college student. The answer became clear in mid-April after his father Dave was terrified by what he found — so many e-cigarettes. "Most likely," says Dr. Hunley, "it was the e-cigarettes that led to his breath failure, which contributed to the spread of the adenovirus."
By the time Walker finally left the hospital in July he'd lost 80 pounds, and his left lung and both his kidneys(肾) had been destroyed. Doctors say he now needs to have the kidney transplanted. Walker admits he is shaken by his experience. Meanwhile, Candy says, "Every time I see someone smoking e-cigarettes, I show them pictures of Walker in the hospital and ask, 'Do you understand that you could end up like this?'"
Have you ever heard someone say, "breakfast is the most important meal of the day", or give you advice about why it's necessary to start the day with a healthy breakfast? It seems that this meal, for many of us, is a must for our day to start well, but is it really that important?
The word "breakfast" comes from "breaking the fast"— the idea of ending the period in which we don't eat during the night. The process that takes place while we sleep consumes some of our food reserves. Breakfast gives us an opportunity to replenish those reduced stores of things like protein and calcium. So in that way, a healthy breakfast makes sense.
There are also many often-quoted studies which seem to connect a state of being overweight with not eating breakfast. In fact, it leads many health experts to advise a healthy breakfast to not only control but also lose weight. In a US study, 50,000 people were monitored over seven years, and those who ate a healthy breakfast were found to have a lower BMI (体重指数), which seems to suggest that breakfast may indeed help people maintain a healthy weight.
But it might not be as simple as that. Alexandra Johnston, professor of appetite(食欲) research at the University of Aberdeen, suggests those who do not have breakfast might be less aware of healthy diets and nutrition, and people who eat breakfast might have a healthier lifestyle, overall exercising and not smoking, for example. And he also points out that with the rise in popularity of intermittent (间歇性的) fasting to lose weight, there may also be some benefits to not eating breakfast, like improving blood sugar control and lowering blood pressure.
So, while breakfast has its benefits, it might not be the most important meal. It seems that a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet might be more important for many of us than just one single meal.

"One, two, three, four..." that is the 1 for six people facing a cold, dark morning at Kamezuka park in Tokyo to bend, stretch, jump, and run in the 2. It has become a 3 of daily life in Japan since the broadcasts, known as radio calisthenics (广播体操).
The three-minute workout is the 4 way to start the day, says Yukihide, a 79-year-old retired businessman who has 5 the routine nearly every day for a decade. "The exercises aren't that 6 and afterwards you feel like your body has 7 woken up."
