I will always admire my father and his faith.
As I held my father's hands one night, I couldn't help but notice their calluses(老茧) and roughness. His hands tell the story of his life as a1, including all his struggles.
One summer, a drought(干旱) hit Ontario, turning it into a burning desert. On one of those hot2I was picking sweet corn with my dad to fill the last order from the grocery store(杂货店). Fifty dozen was all we needed, which3took twenty minutes. That morning, however, the work didn't go4. After forty minutes of aimlessly walking in the field, we still needed twenty dozen. I was completely impatient and angry. 5the basket heavily, I said, "If the store wants its last twenty dozen, they can pick it themselves!" Dad laughed. "Just think, my little girl, only6dozen left for each of us and then we're done." Such is Dad—whatever problem he7, he never gives up.
8, the bad effects of the drought were felt all over our county. It was a challenging time for everyone, but Dad remained optimistic(乐观的). He9to be thankful for other things like good health and food on our plate. Only then did I truly10 to admire Dad and his confidence that guided us through the hard times.
Dad is also a living example of real11. From morning to evening, he works countless hours to12our family. He always puts our happiness13his own, and never fails to cheer me on at my sports games no matter how tired he is after long days. His love and selfless nature have encouraged me to put14first.
Dad, the life15I have learned from you will stay with me forever. You are my father, teacher, friend and, most importantly, my hero.

Each country has its own flag. National flags are often designed with many kinds of shapes on them such as, the sun, stars, the moon, animals and bars.
Which of these do you think appear more in flags, the moon, stars, or the sun? More flags have stars than either the sun or the moon. There are more than 50 countries in the world which have stars on their flags.
USAStars are a special image. They mean 'hope', 'ever lasting', and 'forever'. Stars are very bright so many newly independent countries use stars to show hope for a bright future. The was the first country to use stars to show its new independence.
In Islam, stars have a holy(神圣的)meaning. Most Arabic countries have flags with five point stars to show the five practices of the Islam religious faith (宗教信仰). Also, stars are used in Arabic countries because of the wide use of the mathematic shapes in Islamic art.
Australia and New Zealand both have the constellation(星座)of 'Southern Cross'(a real group of stars) pictured on the flags.
What shapes appear on your country's flag?
①hope ②treasure ③forever ④religious ⑤ever lasting
Have you ever heard someone use the phrase "once in a blue moon"? People use this expression to describe something that they do not do very often. For example, someone might say that he tries to avoid eating sweets because they are unhealthy, but will eat chocolate "once in a blue moon". Or someone who does not usually like to go to the beach might say "I visit the shore once in a blue moon." While many people use this phrase, not everyone knows the meaning behind it.
The first thing to know is that the moon itself is never really blue. This is just an expression. In fact, the phrase "blue moon" has something to do with the shape of the moon, not the color.
As the moon travels around the earth, it appears to change shape. We associate certain names with certain shapes of the moon. For example, when we can see a small part of the moon, it is called a crescent moon (新月). A crescent is a shape that looks like the tip of a fingernail(指甲). When we cannot see the moon at all, it is called a new moon. When we can see the whole moon, it is called a full moon. Usually, there is only one full moon every month. Sometimes, however, there will be two full moons in one month. When this happens, the second full moon is called a "blue moon".
Over the next 20 years, there will only be 15 blue moons. As you can see, a blue moon is a very rare event(稀罕事件). This fact has led people to use the expression "once in a blue moon" to describe other very rare events in their lives.
Chip was in first grade when I arrived at his school as a counselor(辅导员). It was shocking to me that he was described as an angry, uncontrollable and evil(惹人厌的) boy. How could such a little boy, after being in school only one year, be considered "evil"? Over the next several months, I came to know Chip well enough to see that he was neither evil nor uncontrollable.
But, one day, Chip threw a chair at his teacher and was sent to my office. I asked him what made him do this. He replied that his teacher hated him. He felt there was no way to ever get her to like him. I asked him if he would tell his teacher this. He nodded, and we called her into my office.
When the teacher came, _________________. He then said that he knew he was a very, very bad boy, and he didn't think anyone could ever like him. His teacher listened to him with heartfelt compassion. Then she gave him a big warm hug, telling him she didn't hate him at all and, actually, she cared very much about him. Only sometimes Chip's behavior really scared her. It was clear to both Chip and me that she really meant it.
I put my left arm on his shoulders and the right hand on his heart. I told him how wonderful and lovely I saw him to be. I praised how special and brave he was to express his hurt feelings.
As I was speaking to him, his whole body came to rest on my right hand next to his heart. It was a moment in time unlike anything I had experienced before. From then on, I'm pleased to see his behavior improved through the rest of school years.
A child's mind is clear and sensitive(敏感的). He receives whatever others say without protection. It is as easy to consider someone hopeless as it is to consider him able in his own special way.

Are you looking forward to being alone at home?My answer is NO. One day, my parents went (到国外) and left me at home. I had three days (不上课).During the(接下来的) days after they left, I spent the time by(我自己).After (醒来) up in the morning, it's a time to prepare my breakfast. I couldn't cook, so I ate sandwiches without other choice. Then I went to school and spent the day as usual. When I got home after school, I tried to cook something. It's really difficult for me. (不管什么) I cooked, I (烧焦) them. Actually, among all the things, cooking rice is the (最简单的).I (意识到) that I should learn some useful life (技能) and not depend on my parents too much.
What foods are successful? Hamburgers and pizzas are popular. But instant noodles(方便面) have also become a world success. Now instant noodles are celebrating their 62nd birthday!
Instant noodles (invent) by a Japanese named Momofuku Ando. To find a way to make noodles last longer, Ando (begin) experimenting in 1955 and three years later, he made the first bag of instant noodles. Now, sixty-two (year) on, they're eaten all over the world. In fact, they're popular that Japanese consider instant noodles as their (good) invention!
Each year, 95 billion packets of instant noodles are eaten around the world. In the UK, people call instant noodles "pot noodles". University students like (they) a lot. During the first term at college, you may be given a gift bag (include) instant noodles. Instant noodles are cheap and easy to eat. But watch out! People may (think) you are lazy if you are instant noodle lover.
The UN often sends instant noodles as part of its food aid. This is because of their long life and high fat, which makes people feel full for longer time.
However, instant noodles aren't totally innocent(无辜的). They are high in fat and salt. Health experts say they are bad us and we shouldn't eat them too often.
Last month we asked some students about their free time activities. Our questions were about exercise, use of the Internet and watching TV. Here are the results.
We found that only fifteen percent of the students exercise every day. Forty-five percent exercise four to six times a week. Twenty percent exercise only one to three times a week. And twenty percent do not exercise at all.
We all know that many students often go online, but we were surprised that ninety percent of them use the Internet every day. The other ten percent use it at least three or four times a week. Most students use it for fun but not for homework.
The answers to our questions about watching TV were also interesting. Only two percent of the students watch TV one to three times a week. Thirteen percent watch it four to six times a week. And eighty-five percent watch it every day. Although many students like to watch sports, game shows are the most popular.
