— I won't, mum. Good night.
— So it is. Could you tell me __________?
This year our school add many after-school activities. So we may 1 these activities in the afternoon. Some students may play sports. They 2 play soccer, ping-pong or do Chinese Kungfu.
Some students go to learn music. They sing, dance or play some 3 . Other students can draw or practice calligraphy (书法). After-school activities are fun and 4 for students.
But 5 should students do after-school activities? Here are some good 6 . First, doing an after-school activity is a good short break from studying. After the 7 , students can8 focus on the class or their schoolwork. Next, students can make some friends while doing after-school activities. 9 , students can get some new skills from the activities. They can also learn some important life skills like working with others or 10 problems by themselves.
After-school activities are valuable. They provide a lot for us.
When we see well, we do not think about our eyes very often. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we 1 how important our eyes are.
People who are near﹣sighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Everything else seems 2 . A person 3 does a lot of work such as writing, reading and sewing (缝纫) becomes near﹣sighed then.
People who are farsighted suffer from just the 4 problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have 5 reading a book unless they hold it at arm's length. If they want to do much 6 , they must wear glasses, too.
Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. They have what is called astigmatism (散光). This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people's eyes become 7 because of cataracts (白内障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.
Having two good eyes is important for judging distances. 8 eye sees things from a slightly different angle (角度). To prove this to 9 , look at an object out of one eye: then look at the same object out of your other eye. You will find the object's relation to the background and other things around it has changed. The difference between these two different eye views 10 us to judge how far away an object is. People who have only one eye cannot judge distance as people with two eyes do.
A. Exactly. B. I have a different idea. C. Do you mind doing housework? D. Do we need to master living skills? E. We will go to college and live on our own. F. I hope I can learn how to offer help at home. G. We should care about our study and we are always busy. |
Lily: Our headteacher asks me to do some housework. But I think it unnecessary for students to do it.
Tony: Doing housework is good for us.
Lily: Not really.
Tony: Busy? As you see now, most teenagers are weak and lazy.
Lily: You mean doing housework can make us move around?
Tony: We can be active in our lives.
Lily: Maybe you are right.
Tony: And doing housework can help us develop living skills.
Lily:
Tony: Of course we do. Mastering skills like cooking and cleaning house can help us enjoy our college life.
Saturday, 17th March I've got my dream job in New York! However, it's far away from my home town. Yesterday I took the train here and one of the new workmates met me at the railway station. Then he showed me to the company. There they had a welcome party for me. Great! My company offered no living place, so I had to find somewhere to live. I stayed in a hotel while I looked for a new home. |
Sunday, 1st April I've found the perfect flat! It's small but very nice. It's near my office, so I can walk to work. I've soon got used to the life here. I love it! There's a supermarket nearby and some restaurants I can go to when I do not want to cook. My workmates and neighbors are friendly. It's April Fool's Day today and I even played a trick on my neighbor next door. Cool! |
While the mobile Internet is changing the way we live, more and more old people in China are getting in on the digital (数码的) world, although they will have some trouble.
Yang Su is among them. He is both a pianist of Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (交响乐团) and a 61-year-old vlogger (视频博主). With more than 2. 3 million followers on China's famous short video app "Douyin", his videos have been watched by over 1 million times.
"Three years ago, my son put a short video of me playing the piano at home on 'Douyin', and hours later it was played over 1 million times," Yang remembered.
However, it's not easy for him to learn how to film a video. He needs to play through the music since he doesn't know how to edit (编辑) and cut clips. His child helps him a lot later. "The Internet has opened the door to a new world," Yang said. "I always keep myself busy and feel very young at my age."
Do other old people get used to the digital world like Yang?Ding Qiulin is a 73-year-old man from Hunan. "I got my smartphone more than one year ago, but I only use WeChat for video calls," he said. Ding finds it hard to learn to use other apps.
▲ Luo Xu, a post-90s volunteer, joined an organization in Beijing nine years ago to teach old people how to use the Internet. "While I am helping people aged between 50 and 90 years old, I have a strong feeling of pleasure," Luo said.
Wang Yaping became the first spacewoman to enter Tiangong space station on Oct 16, 2021, aged 41.
Wang's space dream started in 2003, when China sent its first astronaut Yang Liwei into space. At that time, Wang was a pilot in the Chinese army. After having safe flights for 1,600 hours over nine years, Wang was a strong candidate (候选人) to become an astronaut in 2010. She pushed herself hard, getting the same training as men. "The space environment won't change because you are a woman," she told Xinhua.
The hardest part is the high-G training. Sitting in a spinning (旋转的)machine, Wang would become blind for a while because her brain was short of blood. "There's a red button(按钮), "said Wang. "If you can't bear it, you can press it to stop." But Wang never used it. "There is no such red button in my heart." That strong spirit finally made her dream come true in 2013. She joined the team for the Shenzhou X mission.
Wang said that as astronauts, women have their own advantages. "Women may be more patient and can better deal with loneliness. Women's hearts are also easier to adapt (适应) to the weightless environment, making them more suitable for long-term tasks. "
Wang Yaping went a long way before becoming the first woman to enter the Tiangong space station. She sets a good example for all women who dream of going to space.
a. Less weight. b. More patience.
c. More problem-solving skills. d. Better ability to deal with loneliness.
Ben, who is an excellent student at school, studies very hard. He gets on well with all of his classmates and they all like him so much. But last Sunday afternoon, Ben was playing football in the sports centre and he suddenly felt upset (心烦意乱的) when thinking of the parents' meeting next Monday. Ben's father passed away in a terrible accident two months ago, leaving Ben and his mother, who was a deaf-mute (聋哑人). He was afraid that other students and their parents would laugh at him at the parents' meeting.
Seeing her son getting home, the mother made a gesture (手势) of "I love you" as usual. Ben usually gave back a kiss to her in the past, but this time he didn't say anything and went into his own room. Ben went for the table but he ate nothing with his head down. Her mother asked what on earth had happened to him. "Nothing serious. I just feel uncomfortable in my heart, Mum. "
The next day, forty-nine parents went into the classroom and sat on their children's seats. Only Ben's seat was empty. Ben was gloomy (忧郁的) on the seat. Suddenly, "please show your mother to your seat," the head teacher said. Ben's mother made a gesture of "I'm sorry I'm late" to others. "Please explain your mother's words to us," the head teacher said. Ben came to his mother and asked impolitely, "Why do you come here, Mum?"
"Only because I love you," the mother made a gesture and her face turned red like a shy girl.
At that time, all the parents knew she was a deaf-mute. They didn't laugh. Instead, they all stood up from the seats and smiled to her in a friendly way…
People depend on plants. We use plants for food, cloth, shelter (住处), and even the air we breathe.
Plants keep our air and water clean. Green plants give us oxygen (氧气). Oxygen is part of the air we breathe. Plants are also part of the water cycle (水循环). Most of the water that a plant takes in goes back into the air.
Plants give us a lot of the food on the earth. Fruits, vegetables, and grains (谷物) come from plants. Without plants, we would not have bread, rice, carrots, apples, oranges, or bananas! Many people are growing plants to eat in their own gardens at home. Having your own garden helps the earth as well.
When you grow your own fruits and vegetables, you help cut down on pollution because big trucks don't need to take your food to shops. You also help reduce the amount of rubbish because you don't need to use bags for packing your food. You can just pick it out of the ground or off a plant and put it into a basket!
Trees are an important plant resource (资源). They are used to make lots of things around your home and at your school. And trees provide fruits that are good for you. Without trees, the earth would be a very different place.
"Teenager" are young, but they have to make many important choices by themselves. They need to think about questions like these: Should I go to college? What kind of job do I want? However, some people influence their choices.
Who influences teenagers?
It depends on the kind of choice. When teenagers buy things, friends are the most important influence. This is especially true for clothes and music.
TV shows, advertisements and parents also influence teenagers. In more serious things, parents are probably the most important influence. Some teenagers say it's best to regard both parents and friends as influences. James, a seventeen-year-old boy says, "parents are really important because they can tell you what's right and what's wrong."
But teenagers also feel they need to make their own choices. Do you depend on parents or others when you decide what to do and how to do it? Whoever you depend on, the correct choice is the most important. Your future is in your hand.
