When I was in my fourth year of teaching, I was a high school track coach (田径教练). One year, I had a student, John, who changed to our school from Greece, and seemed to be interested in sports, so I encouraged him to join our track team. I explained to him that even though he had never taken part in it before, I did believe that he could do well in any event, and l would be willing to teach him at whichever ones interested him. He accepted the offer, and began to work hard at every practice.
About a month later, I had found out from other ways that John was a first-class tennis player, winning many prizes in his home country. I went to him, asking, "John, I really enjoy that you came out for the track team, but why didn't you play tennis instead? It seems that would interest you a lot more, since you're so good at it."
John answered, "Well, I like tennis, but you told me that you believed in me, and that you thought I could do well in track, so I wanted to try it for that reason."
From then on, I often remember my student's reply. I told it to a friend and she suggested I write it down to share somewhere with more teachers. No matter how critical (不满的) students can be of themselves, I've found that a simple "I trust that you can do it!" can go a long way!
Long long ago, a God called Ratu lived in the sky. Ratu liked to play games and make people angry. The game he liked best was to fly down into the sea and frighten all the fishes. The fishes became very tired of his game. They asked Hemi, the God of the sea, to help them.
So Hemi tried to catch Ratu the next time he flew into the sea, but he was too slow. Ratu laughed at Hemi as he flew past him. This made Hemi angry and he had an idea. He asked the fishes to bring him a lot of seaweed. Hemi tied it all together and made a large net from it. Soon Ratu flew down and Hemi threw the net over him. Ratu fought and fought but could not get free. He was caught.
Ratu promised (保证) never to frighten fishes again if Hemi would set him free. But Hemi did not believe him. Instead, he changed Ratu into a mountain in the sea. Ratu was so angry that when he opened his mouth to shout at Hemi, fire and smoke broke out. And that is why the Island of Ratu is a volcano (火山).
When we see someone for the first time, we interpret many tiny things from their faces. But since the pandemic began, we have often been interacting with people whose faces we can only half see. And this goes both ways, weakening our ability to offer a friendly smile. So what does it mean to go more than a year without seeing smiles as steadily as we did before?
A 2020 research paper in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (美容皮肤病学) found that dividing the face into a visible half and an invisible half might enhance the perception (感知) of negative emotions and decrease the perception of positive emotions. "Emotions such as surprise that use the mouth may be mistaken for strongly negative emotions such as anger or sadness, and a smile may seem diminished or less genuine when the teeth and lips are covered," the author wrote.
Peter Revenaugh has been studying how people interpret faces for years. He knows this firsthand. As a surgeon who often wears masks around patients, he is careful to use other hints to be clear when, for example, he is making a joke. "Some of my jokes fall flat," he said, "because they are not really sure. They can't see me smiling."
Ways to adjust restricted facial communication include making more of an effort to analyze positivity. People can employ a cadence (抑扬顿挫) to their speech to guide others, for example. Crinkling the corners of the eyes, a lighter tone of the voice, all can help. Revenaugh has tried to use his eyes more to express meaning. "Our eyes crinkle at the corner when we're doing a true smile, and most people around the world recognize that as a happy feeling," he said.
And when Revenaugh is with a patient, both masked, and he is joking?
"I'll simply say, I'm joking." he said.
Many people who don't normally visit museums may consider them boring and often wonder what the appeal(吸引力)is. Actually, people visit museums for a variety of reasons. . The Afrikaner culture that I grew up in has a delicious tradition — baking lots of different types of cookies at Christmas. We bake for days on end to 1 our cookie tins, and prepare cookie baskets and boxes to 2 to friends and neighbors. As an adult, I choose not to continue many of the Christmas traditions. However, this is still one of my favorite Christmas activities.
I have a friend from a different 3 background. She also loves cooking and baking. When she heard that I was planning a baking day, she 4 me to teach her how to bake my Christmas cookies. A week before Christmas, it was usually baking time. We both envisioned(想象) the beautiful and tasty treats that we would make for our families, friends and neighbors. Our baking got off to a slow but 5 start. The techniques and skills that I'd used countless times were new to my friend. And some of them would be even 6 to an experienced baker, let alone a first-timer. On my own, I'd have done it quickly and correctly. But by midday, I could feel my 7 rising. Teaching my friend had put us well behind 8. There was, of course, an easy solution: I could 9 and just let her watch. But I had promised that I would teach her. So we decided to reduce the variety of cookies, bake more of the 10 versions and get creative with the icing. At the end of the second day, we had 20 beautiful gift boxes, each displaying a mouth-watering selection of cookies.
My friend couldn't wait to get home and share the 11 of her labors with her family. Seeing how proud she was, I was doubly 12 that I didn't act on my thought to do everything myself just because it would be 13. Not only would I have robbed her of an opportunity to 14 but I would have robbed her of that new-found 15 and the pride she felt at having achieved something new.

One day, a man in a nice suit who seemed to have a respectable job went into a restaurant after the busy work in the evening, with a little tiredness on his face. "What a busy day!" he said to himself in a low voice. He sat down at a table and ordered a big pizza at once in order to eat some food quickly and then go home.
After a little while, another man who looked homeless with worn-out clothes came into the restaurant and sat near the nice suit man with a smile on his face. The nice suit man didn't give back a smile with respect, and nor did he cast a glance at the homeless man.
Ten minutes later, the pizza arrived and was put in the middle of the table. The nice suit man couldn't wait to eat it, so he grabbed (吃) it without hesitation because of hunger. A few seconds later, the homeless man took a piece of the pizza and chewed (咀嚼) it slowly with a happy smile on his face. "I won't be angry about this, because he is a homeless person. It won't really matter if he doesn't continue to eat my second piece of pizza," the nice suit man thought.
Then the homeless man took the second piece and third piece during the next ten minutes with a very satisfied smile. The nice suit guy finally got angry and shouted, "Why don't you order one by yourself? Why can't you stop eating my pizza?" At the same time, the waiter came and held a pizza to the nice suit man, saying, "Sir, this one is yours and that one just now was this gentleman's." The nice suit man felt a little embarrassed and said to the homeless man, "Why didn't you tell me the one just now was yours? I am sorry to have shouted at you." The homeless man was still calm and in peace with a kind voice, "Because you looked hungry and I like to share my food with you." The nice suit man felt ashamed and he decided to give his whole one to the homeless man.
Para. 1: But the homeless man said, "No, please don't give it to me; share it with me please."
Para. 2: The next day, the nice suit man was on his way to visit the homeless man.
