It was about 10:15 p. m. Janice Esposito got off the train at the Bellport, New York, got into her car and began driving home. She had traveled the route so many times that she almost drove automatically: a left onto Station Road, then a left on Montauk Highway, and then—bang! Out of nowhere a car crashed into Esposito's car, pushing her backward some 100 feet onto the railroad tracks. Injured but mostly shocked by the crash and by the airbags that popped up, she got stuck in the vehicle.
As it happened, Pete DiPinto was getting ready for bed when he heard the crash coming from not far outside his bedroom window. DiPinto, a volunteer firefighter, 64, never stopped to think. He grabbed a flashlight and rushed out.
The first car he came upon, 2, 000 feet from his front yard, was the one that had hit Esposito. Once making sure the driver was OK, he looked around and spotted Esposito's car straddling (跨坐) the railroad tracks. And then he heard a bell sound, which signalled a coming train.
DiPinto rushed to Esposito's car and hit on the driver's side window. She just looked at him. "I don't know where I am," she said.
"You're on the railroad tracks," DiPinto yelled. "We have to get you off right now!" The train was traveling at a speed of 65 miles per hour toward them. The driver's door couldn't be opened due to the crash, so DiPinto ran to the passenger side. He threw open the door, pushed aside the airbags, seized Esposito's arms, and pulled her toward him across the passenger seat until he finally got her out and walked her to safety as quickly as he could.
Within seconds, the train crashed into the car. "It was like a Hollywood movie," DiPinto told reporters the next day.
"Last night," said Greg Miglino Chief of the South County Ambulance, "the hero arrived in pajamas (睡衣), not in a fire truck. "
Losing weight comes with a lot of health benefits—including making your brain sharper. Yes, it turns out that overweight may damage cognitive functions (认知功能) such as memory and attention. There have been few studies of overweight and cognitive functioning, possibly because it is generally believed that it is not a primary risk cause for poor cognitive performance. Losing weight, therefore, may help improve these mental functions, according to a new research led by John Gunstad, assistant professor of psychology at Kent State University.
Growing evidence suggests that being fat is linked to cognitive deficits (缺陷). So Gunstad and his team guessed that losing weight might improve mental function. For their study, they measured memory and attention in a group of 150 overweight participants, some of whom had some kind of operation for weight loss and some did not. All of the volunteers completed mental skills tests to assess their abilities of memory and attention at the beginning of the study, and again 12 weeks later. To begin with, about 24% of the patients showed damaged learning and 23% showed signs of poor memory when tested. At the end of the study, those who had lost weight after operation improved their scores into the average or above average range for cognitive functions. Scores for the volunteers who didn't lose weight dropped even further.
The study helped Gunstad to find out whether losing weight had any effect on mental function. Now that he's seen the positive effect that weight loss can have on memory and attention, he says he will next study those who choose to lose weight by the traditional way—eating healthier and getting more active. He expects that losing weight in this way will have a similarly positive effect on the brain. "If we can improve the condition with operations, then we can probably produce the same change with behavioral weight loss as well," he says.
The mental health of children is connected to their parents' mental health. A recent study asked parents to report on their children's mental and physical(身体的)health as well as their own mental health. One in 14 children aged 0〜17 years had a parent who reported poor mental health, and those children were more likely to have poor general health and a mental or developmental disability.
Being mentally healthy during childhood includes reaching developmental milestones, learning healthy social skills and how to solve problems. Mentally healthy children are more likely to have a happy life and are more likely to work well at home, in school, and in their communities.
A child's healthy development depends on their parents who serve as their first sources(来源) of support in becoming independent and leading healthy and successful lives.
The mental health of parents and children is connected in many ways. Parents who have their own mental health challenges, such as dealing with anxiety (fear or worry), may have more difficulty- providing care for their children compared to parents who describe their mental health as good. Caring for children can create challenges for parents, particularly if they lack(缺乏) support, which can have a negative effect on a parent's mental health. Parents and children may also experience shared risks, such as living in unsafe environments, and the like.
Fathers are important for improving children's mental health, although they are not as often included in research studies as mothers. The recent study looked at fathers and found similar connections between their mental health and their children's general and mental health as for mothers. Fathers and mothers need support, which, in turn, can help them support their children's mental health.
Summer is the season of family travel. are our top 5 things to teach your children before entering big crowds.
How Far They Can Go— For young children, you should set a rule of always holding a parent's hand. For older kids, you may be comfortable with an "I can always see you and you can always see me" rule.
To Call Your Real Name—Teach your children that you will find them, so it's best if they stay in one place. What's more, teach them to call out your full name instead of "Mummy" or "Daddy" to help you more easily find them.
How to Identify a "Safe Person"—Make sure your children know the best people to approach if they get separated from you. Employees working at the place you're visiting are generally "safe people". But what about places that may not have employees, like the beach? Experts say that mums are often the most willing and best-equipped people to help kids.
What to Say— Remember that if your children do get separated from you, they will likely be panicked(恐慌), so don't assume that they will know how to tell strangers that they are lost. Role-play lost and using simple sentences like, "I am with your kids to help them know what to do if it actually happens.
Their Personal Information—Make sure your children know as much basic personal information as possible, including their full names, parents' full names and telephone numbers and the address.
A. Teach your children to look for a mum with kids.
B. Sometimes it's not hard to find a safe person in such places.
C. But do your kids know what to do if they get separated from you?
D. If your kids are too young to remember them, write them down!
E. It can be hard for people to help a lost child.
F. Tell your children to behave normally when they get lost.
G. It's important to talk with your children about how close you expect them to stay with you.
I fell in love with Yosemite National Park the first time I saw it. My parents took us there for camping. On the way out, I asked them to wait while I ran up to El Capitain, a1rock of 3,300 feet straight up. I touched that giant rock and knew2I wanted to climb it. That has been my life's passion(热爱) ever since—3the rocks and mountains of Yosemite. I've long made Yosemite my4.
About 15 years ago I started seeing a lot of5, like beer cans, empty boxes, around the area. It's beyond me why visitors started respecting the place6and treated such a beautiful home-like place this way.
I tried7trash(垃圾) myself, but the job was too big. I would8an hour or two on the job, only to find the area trashed all over again weeks later. Finally, I got so tired of it that I decided something had to change.
In 2004, together with some climbers, I set a date for a9. On that day, more than 300 people10. Over three days we collected about 6,000 pounds of trash. It was amazing how much we were able to11. I couldn't believe the12we made—the park looked clean!
Each year volunteers come for the cleanup from everywhere. In 2007 alone, 2,945 people picked up 42,330 pounds of trash.
I often hear people13about their surroundings. If you are one of them, I would say the only way to change things is by14rather than complaining. We need to teach by15.
Hands can easily get cold in winter. Wearing gloves might be a good choice, but sometimes it is not(convenience). However, this was not a problem for ancient Chinese people, had a more delicate tool to keep their hands warm: hand warmers.
There is no accurate written record about the origin of this tool, but there are some stories about its (invent). One folk story concerns Emperor Yangdi from the Sui Dynasty (581—619AD) who visited Jiangsu in the winter. Due to the bitter cold, the local official asked the producers to make small warmer for the emperor that could be held in one's hands. Thus the hand warmer (create).
Techniques for producing the tool were (steady) developed in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Many poems and books from this period recorded people using hand warmers. The Dream of the Red Chamber, the classic novel written Cao Xueqin from the Qing Dynasty, also described a maid who (send) a hand warmer to Lin Daiyu in one chapter.
Ancient hand warmers had various designs. Round and square shapes are typical. Some of (they) look like pumpkins and flowers. Inside a hand warmer there were (burn) coals, some mixed with fragrance and giving off a pleasant smell.

Dear friends,
It's my honor to be here to share my opinion on how to help disabled people.
One of my sisters who had worked abroad for 10 years returned home for her vacation.
All the family members were happy. My parents gave her a simple celebration and prepared food for us to share.
While staying with them, an idea came to me. We could have a family outing on the beach! All of my siblings(兄弟姐妹) agreed! It had been a long time since we went outing last time and it was the chance to do it again. We set off the next day.
The weather was nice and many people were enjoying the seawater. I ran towards the water and felt the coldness of it. My siblings placed our things in a big cottage(村舍). They brought many foods and planned to cook fish and pork meat. Everyone in the cottage was busy preparing for food while the children went to swim. I couldn't swim though I was already a teenager. That was why I just played in the shallow part of the sea.
On the other side of the beach, I saw a small fishing boat. I never tried to ride on it, but while I was looking at it, I was eager to take a ride on the boat. Without a second thought, I went to the boat alone. I paid the fisherman for using his boat and started to push it towards the sea. In my mind, I would not go to the deep part. A few minutes later, I made it float on water and I enjoyed it! I made it move forward and kept it afloat for several minutes. Suddenly, the seawater became disturbing and large waves surrounded me. I couldn't control the boat anymore.
My boat was pulled towards the deeper part.
……
When I came to life, I was lying in hospital.
