I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City. When the studio didn't want me for the film - it wanted somebody as well known as Paul - he stood up for me. I don't know how many people would have done that; they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers.
The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft (技艺) and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other - but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core (核心) of our relationship off the screen.
We shared the belief that if you're fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back - he with his Newman's Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn't see each other all that regularly, but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events.
I last saw him a few months ago. He'd been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was, and we didn't talk about it. Ours was a relationship that didn't need a lot of words. Why was the studio unwilling to give the role to author at first?

Simply saying thank you doesn't seem enough in certain situations. I was considering this while working as a1just a few weeks ago. And it came to me then how much easier it would be if we had a range of words that express different2of gratitude (感谢).
My thoughts were soon3. We had a woman patient who was4from a knee replacement operation. One afternoon, while5to get into bed she collapsed (倒下) from what was6discovered to be a heart attack. The collapse was disastrous,7the emergency medical team and good teamwork. But she recovered, though8,and was ready for discharge (出院)after four weeks.
She was9for everything that the medical and nursing team had done for her. On her day of discharge, we shared in her10at her recovery. As she was11she was eager to say12to each of us in the nursing team. When she13one nurse, she tried to press a five-pound note into her hand. My colleague14to accept it, saying that we were all just15our job. The patient looked puzzled, and then16: "Oh this isn't for the17I had. I take that as a18. No, this is for setting my hair yesterday.''
And there you have it. To many people,19lives is part of the job but styling hair is an20and should be rewarded.
Are you facing a situation that looks impossible to fix?
In 1969, the pollution was terrible along the Cuyahog a River Cleveland, Ohio. It (be) unimaginable that it could ever be cleaned up. The river was so polluted that it (actual) caught fire and burned. Now, years later, this river is one of most outstanding examples of environmental cleanup.
But the river wasn't changed in a few days even a few months. It took years of work (reduce) the industrial pollution and clean the water. Finally, that hard work paid off and now the water in the river is (clean) than ever.
Maybe you have a habit is driving your family crazy. Possibly you drink too much or don't know how to control your credit card use. When you face such an impossible situation, don't you want a quick fix and something to change immediately?
While there are (amaze) stories of instant transformation, for most of us the (change) are gradual and require a lot of effort and work, like cleaning up a polluted river. Just be (patience).
When I was a children, my mom was especial fond of trying new recipes. She even started baking bread. One evening, my mom placed some burnt bread in the front of my dad. I kept silent to see that my father noticed the bread burnt. Yet my father seemed not have found anything unusual. All he does was to eat his bread, smile to my mom, and ask me how my day at school was. I don't remember what I told him, and I do remember watch him eat the burnt bread! When my mom apologized, she said:"My dear, I love everything cooking by you."
