A window is a small place of the world, through which we can see and make an assumption(猜想) out of what happens.
One day, I was taking a break in my office when I woke up to the1of a car crash(碰撞). I looked out of my window. A car had just hit a fence(围栏) and broke it.
The driver2of the car. He was short and ugly without hair on his head. I disliked him at once.
To my surprise, the man tried to3the broken fence he caused. However, his efforts all failed. Once he even funnily fell onto the road when trying to pull the fence. I4a lot. The failure of this terrible man was brightening my whole day.
About 10 minutes later, the man left.
That, I thought, would be the5of his efforts. The man that hateful man--was going to leave all the mess behind for6else to clean up.
But the man appeared a few minutes later with some7. For the next hour, I watched out of my window as he8fixing the fence until it was safer and stronger than before.
This man was a hero. My wrong assumptions, I realized, were all about myself. I would be9and run away if I came across such a messy situation.
My window had woken me up from a nap to teach me a lesson10changed my whole day and even my whole life.

When I was in the eighth grade, my class was assigned(指派)to be friends with the second-grade kids. I got this little girl named Shelley. The first time I saw her, she was silent and cold. She was small for her age, and she didn't play with the other kids in her class.
I tried all kinds of things to get her to talk to me. I bought her toys, crayons and candies. But try as I might, nothing worked. One time, I gave her a coloring book and said, "Shelley, now you can color in it any time." Shelley looked at the coloring book and then looked up at me, and finally looked away. By that, I didn't know how I was going to get the little girl to accept me, but I knew I wouldn't give up on her.
One Friday, I decided to tell her a story about my childhood. I told her that 1 felt lonely when I was with my classmates, and how I thought only my teachers liked me. I also told her that every day was a battle(战役) for me and I fought back tears so people wouldn't know how much I was hurting. She sat there just listening, trying to decide whether I was lying or not. Finally, when my story ended, there were tears in her eyes. She said, "Thank you." From then on, Shelley was a different little girl. She started smiling and talking with other kids.
Looking back at this I'm in awe (惊叹), because all I did was to help her realize that she wasn't alone. I didn't ask her to tell her story, because her story is my story.
Recently, a short video has become very popular on the Internet. It's about a girl dancing on the water. Her name is Yang Liu, from Zunyi, Guizhou. Many foreigners think she is able to do Chinese "Qing Gong". Actually, she was standing on a single piece of bamboo. It's one of the traditional folk sport—single bamboo drifting(独竹漂).
When Yang Liu was seven years old, she started practicing single bamboo drifting with her grandmother. For little Yang Liu, it was a big challenge. The most difficult part was to keep balance (平衡). But the clever girl gradually found the key to keeping balance. After years of practice, Yang Liu could not only stand on the bamboo, but also do some simple performances.
Yang Liu had ever learned dance. Then, she got a new idea to show Chinese traditional dance while standing on the bamboo. It would be a new kind of performance. Although it was difficult to mix the two skills together and it was much easier to get hurt, Yang Liu didn't give up.
Practice makes perfect. Finally she could dance on the bamboo successfully and beautifully.
Not long ago, she created another new performance, called "Ballet (芭蕾)on the water", which was quite special. She posted a video of the performance on the Internet. Soon, the video caught a lot of attention and praise. There are more and more people getting to know her. "I'm glad that so many people like my performance. I hope the traditional folk sports will be passed down by more young people," Yang Liu said.

One day in 1903, French scientist Edouard Benedictus climbed high to get something on a high shelf in his laboratory. He carelessly hit an empty glass, and it fell to the stone floor.
Benedictus climbed down, expecting a mess but he found a surprise. The glass hadn't broken into a million pieces! It had cracked (破裂)but it had held together.
His helper explained he had used the glass to hold liquid plastic(液态塑料). Then he'd forgotten to wash it. The liquid plastic dried, so the glass looked empty. Benedictus realized the dried plastic had kept the cracked glass from falling apart. The same week, Benedictus read a report about a car accident in the newspaper. Many people were driving fast on the roads. When accidents happened, people were often hurt by flying broken glass. Suddenly Benedictus thought of the broken glass. Could his accident be something useful?
Benedictus spent a lot of time in the lab, trying to find out the best way to make safety glass for cars. Finally, Benedictus put some liquid plastic between two pieces of glass and pressed them together. When he hit it, the "glass -and -plastic sandwich" cracked, but it didn't break into small pieces.
Benedictus succeeded. He wrote in his diary, "I produced my first piece of Triplex (the name for his invention)." Benedictus was right. His method of putting plastic between pieces of glass is still used today. And that's how an accident led to an invention that made us all safer!

The game of Go(围棋) is one of the four most popular games in Chinese culture. It is not only a competitive event of the mind, but also a board game of entertainment (娱乐).
Go was created in China more than 4,000 years ago. Now many people around the world has shown great interest in it, too. Moreover, Go still serves as a way of cultural exchange among the people in many Eastern and Western countries today.
A game of Go has many meanings for real life. It means a square world of round pieces in black and white. There are 181 black pieces and 180 white ones in total. While the board is fixed, the pieces can be placed in millions of different ways, just as life in the real world may take many turns. The people placement of each tiny Go piece is almost the same as how one might solve a difficult problem in life.
Go carries deeper cultural and competitive meanings. Different from chess and Chinese chess, in the game of Go, the players do not wipe out(消灭) each other's pieces. Instead, they simply try to win a larger share of space while allowing the other side some space. The one who forces the other side into a dead comer wins the game.
A modern Go talent in China once believed that the final purpose of the game was to achieve peace. Instead of fighting as enemies, the two players work together and play an excellent game.
