I've trained my teenage traveler well. I've never been more certain.
Having just celebrated her 16th birthday, my daughter got the chance to goto Thailand with Adventures Cross-Country(ARCC) on a1volunteer service. ARCC has a2no phone rule. When the group met for the first time at Los Angeles International Airport, all phones were3right away. Once a week, the kids could4their phones. It was amazing to have the first week of radio5. After all, these kids can usetheir phones freely at home. And this experience was also6.
Less than 24 hours7landing in Bangkok, they got on open-air bus-like trucks and bumped (颠簸行进)their way along dirt roads for a couple of8to the Village Hill Tribe. Their new home was a village9. Desks and chairs were pushed aside to clear floor space for the kids to10at night. During the crazy days in early August, there were insects everywhere. 11were finished by filling a bucket (桶) with a soft pipe(管子)and pouring it over the head. When my home12rang about a week after she left,13there were no complaints (抱怨). She said that the shower was the14thing that ever happened to her.
Experiences like this cannot be got by reading books or searching the Internet. They are learned by15and doing. All of the teenagers learned that people, including themselves, can do great things when they put their minds to them.

There are so many ways to make new friends such as joining a sports team, taking part in community activities, or traveling. And there is no doubt that a friend in need is a friend indeed because he can help you out when you are in trouble or encourage you when you are upset. In my opinion, joining a sports team will be my first choice.
The first reason for this is that everyone in a sports team has the same interest, which is the main character for friends. Because of it, they will become your potential friends so that the chance to be true friends is very high. Also, the same interest can give you a lot to talk about with your friends in conversations.
Another reason that should be considered is the memory. After you fight for something with your partners, it will leave you a good experience, which is necessary for a long-lasting friendship. Besides, trust is also an important reason. As we know, keeping trust is the most important thing in the team because it can make you be together all the time. Finally, you can share happiness and sadness with true friends and they will make you feel life is beautiful and that the future is bright.
Join a sports team, and your new friends are waiting for you. When I was in junior high, I was in the school soccer team.
In India, there are a group of people ironing(熨烫)clothes for a living. Their main tool is an iron box that is heated up by firewood. India's Science and Technology Department found out that there are about 10 million ironing carts in the country. Each of them uses more than 5 kilograms of firewood each day, Reuters reported.
After seeing ironing workers throw the used firewood away on the street side, Vinisha Umashankar, a 15-year-old student from Tamil Nadu, India, told NPR that she started to think about how much firewood people burn and how bad it is for the environment. Burning (燃烧)firewood gives out greenhouse gases such as CO2, which leads to the rising temperature.
Vinisha had the idea of creating a wheeled ironing cart with the solar panel(太阳能板). She spent six months thinking about how to make one. The cart has solar panels which take in sunlight to provide electricity. The rest electricity can be stored in a plate for use on cloudy days, according to Time Magazine.
Five hours of bright sunshine is enough to use for six hours.
To complete the invention, Vinisha lost herself in reading college-level physics textbooks to find out how solar panels work. Then, she reported her idea to the National Innovation Foundation, run by the Indian government. Engineers there helped her build working models, NPR reported.
Now, her invention is getting worldwide attention. "I am not just a girl from India. I am a girl from Earth," Vinisha said in her speech. "All of us should understand that environmental problems are real andcan't be solved at a later date," Vinisha continued, "There is no immediate stop. There are no magic ways. "
Can plants talk? Modern research has found that they do communicate with each other.
It has been known for some time that plants use special smells to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets hurt by insects. The plant gives out a special smell from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning or a call for help. When another plant gets the smell, it starts to give out its own. Some of these smells drive insects away. Others make the wasps(黄蜂)come! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the plants. Scientists hope to learn more about the plant warning, so that we can use it to grow more fruit and vegetables.
More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can't hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants, such as fruit and vegetables, make noises with their roots (根). Some trees make noises when there is not enough water.
Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing way of communication that can connect nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this "wood wide web". The wood wide web is connected underground by fungi (霉菌). It connects the roots of different plants to each other. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. UJsing the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. However, it may lead to bad results. Plants may use it to steal food from each other, or spread smells to kill or hurt other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a "firewall" to help stop such hurt within the wood wide web.
Scientists are learning more about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to "talk" with them ourselves.

Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes: Music improves certain language abilities in the brain. Here, we look at two examples.
A recent study by researcher Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person's hearing ability. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly.
Think about violinists in an orchestra (管弦乐团). When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and pay no attention to the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to focus on certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.
Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke(中风)patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. Why does this work? He isn't sure. Music seems to make different parts of the brain work, including the damaged(损坏的)parts. This might help patients to use that part of the brain again.
A. It can help sick people get better. B. He was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to speak. C. Musicians hear better because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. D. In his study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. |
