It was getting dark. Paul looked out of the window and sighed (叹气). Dad said he could come home by 5:30, but it was almost 7:00. Even if Dad came back, it wouldn't be much fun playing1in the dark. Paul walked into his room and threw his baseball into the corner. He tried to do some homework, but he couldn't.
The phone2at about 8:00. It was Dad, "Paul, I'm sorry, but I couldn't play baseball with you tonight. I have to finish my work at the office. Maybe we can play this weekend. Oh, no. How about next weekend?"
Paul couldn't understand why Dad was so3. He threw himself into the sofa and soon fell asleep. His book was still opened to the4page.
The next day at school, Paul didn't hand in his homework and he5a test. Mrs. Green, his teacher, asked him to stay after school. "Paul, you didn't do your homework. You didn't pass the test and only got a D. This isn't like you. What's wrong?"
Paul just sat there6. "Paul, if you don't want to talk, I will understand you. I know that something is worrying you, but you have to get it out. You7to tell it to someone."
As Paul walked home, he thought of what Mrs. Green said. Maybe he didn't do his homework because he wanted to his dad8him. He knew Mrs. Green was right. He decided to9her advice.
When Paul got home, he10his dad. But there was no answer. Then it went to voicemail. Paul began talking, "Dad, I can't play with you next weekend. I've got lots of problems with my11. Also, I really don't want to spend another day looking out of the window and waiting. Whenever you12our plans, Dad, it hurts me. But it's not too late to rebuild our relationship. Dad, I love you."
As Paul ended the call, he felt13. He didn't know whether his dad would feel different, but it didn't matter. He himself14. He expressed his feelings to the right person. He had a15 head as he was doing his homework that evening.
Over 100 panda fans sang Happy Birthday as they celebrated the 38th birthday of Xin Xing at Chongqing Zoo on August 16th, 2020. Xin Xing enjoyed a cake made of ice covered by her favorite foods, including bamboo leaves and shoots, apples, carrots and watermelon.
A pandas average age in the wild is 14-20 years. Xin Xing is the world's oldest giant panda. A panda of 38 years old is like a person of about 110 to 130 years old. Xin Xing is expected to break the Guinness world record. Good genes and special scientific care are probably the main reasons for Xin Xing to live so long.
Xin Xing, born in Sichuan Province in 1982, was saved in the wild and sent to Chongqing Zoo in 1983. She visited Canada during the 1988 Winter Olympics, where she attracted over 1 million visitors. She is also a hero mom, having given birth to 10 pandas.
Now she is in good physical condition and she is going to 100 kg in weight. She eats seven meals a day, including 30 kg of bamboo shoots, 1 kg of bamboo leaves and some fruit. The zoo also pays much attention to her health, including daily blood pressure checks.
"We spend so much time together, and she is like a family member to me," said Zhang Naicheng, who has looked after her for 28 years. In recent years, Zhang has spent most of his nights staying in Xin Xing's panda house in case she needs him. "It's hard work, but I have fun looking after the panda," he said. Since she is too old to eat the hard skin of the bamboo shoots, the zookeepers choose fresh bamboo leaves that they can cut into small pieces.
Xin Xing's 38th birthday encourages people to try to protect the animals, especially those in danger.
① Fans sang a song for her. ② It was celebrated at the zoo.
③ She enjoyed a birthday cake. ④ It broke the world record.
One day you open the fridge and find some moldy (发霉的) food. But before you can throw it away, your mother stops you. She doesn't want to waste food. She cuts off the moldy part and eats the rest. Is it safe to do this?
Mold can grow on almost all kinds of food. Mold is usually green, white, black or grey. Mold makes food soft and changes its color. Moldy food tastes quite bad.
If you find mold in soft food, just throw it away. Soft food, such as bread, tomatoes or hot dogs usually has water. This allows mold to easily grow below its surface. Bacteria can also grow along with it.
But it's easy to take away mold from hard food. Mold can't grow very deeply inside this kind of food. According to the BBC, you should cut about 2. 5cm around and below the mold to clear it. It's OK to cut the moldy parts out of hard food and eat the rest. But if the food is totally covered with mold, you should still throw it away.
Most kinds of mold are bad for us. But some kinds of mold can be used to make food. For example, penicillin (青霉菌) can be used to make many types of cheeses, and they're quite delicious as well.
First aid is a very useful skill to have. By learning it, you could save someone's life someday. But in China, less than 1 percent of adults have first aid knowledge, according to the China Science Communication website.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) realized this. On Aug 24, it issued a statement along with the Red Cross Society of China. It asked all public schools in China to provide first aid courses, including CPR (心肺复苏) training, as part of their health classes. Then, how does CPR help? CPR is an important first aid skill that can save people of cardiac arrest. The first few minutes are very important. If CPR correctly happens to the people within the first four to six minutes, the people will have better chances to survive.
A 2019 report by the State Council showed that 64.6 percent of schools already have these courses. However, the results aren't good. According to the MOE statement, future results are expected to be better.
Other countries also tried to provide first aid training for their citizens. In 1966, the US government said police officers, firefighters, middle school teachers and college instructors must receive CPR training. A 2017 report showed that 65 percent of Americans received CPR training.
In Switzerland, all citizens learn first aid skills. In Germany, 80 percent of people received first aid training, according to CGTN.
There are 24 solar terms in China, and the Grain Rain(谷雨) is one of them. It fell on April 19 this year.
This solar term is called the Grain Rain because it is known for "rain" that helps the grain grow. From its name, we can guess it means a time of more rain. So if you go out during the Grain Rain, you may need to bring an umbrella with you.
But this is a great time for planting crops. If you miss the time for planting during the Grain Rain, you will feel sorry later. So maybe you can try to plant some flowers or vegetables in your garden. When the spring rain falls, farmers begin to grow crops. Farmers often say, "Spring rain is as precious as oil." It brings farmers hope for a good year ahead.
There are also many interesting customs during the Grain Rain. In the northern part of China, people like to eat Chinese toon (椿芽) mixed with eggs. The food made during the Grain Rain tastes wonderful and it's a kind of food with high nutrition value. So it is good for your stomach. In the southern part of China, the tea leaves are picked during the time. They are called Grain Rain tea, which is famous for its freshness and sweet smell.
