Jack is a young man from a very poor family. He works in a small factory and makes1money every month. He always feels sad. One day he stands with an old priest in a church. He says, "It is really2 . Do you know John? He is my best classmate. He was a 3student at school. He4did his homework after school. But now he is a successful writer. "
The priest answers, "Now he is quite5. He always keeps on6his novels very late in the evening…"
Jack7his words, "Justin is my classmate, too. His body was very8at school. He was usually in hospital because of his sick legs. He couldn't have9lessons at all. But now he is a popular10. "
"Oh, I hear in the past he always spent all his time11and…"
"Now," Jack stops him again, "Paul has a big restaurant. At school he had no money to eat beef or chicken." This time the priest doesn't answer12. But Jack is impatient(不耐烦的)," 13 don't you say a word? Is it fair (公平的) or unfair ?"
"I think it is fair. Success is a ladder (梯子). If you always put your two14in the pockets and stop trying, you can't arrive at the 15of success forever. "

Now, the VOA Learning English program (节目) Words and Their Stories. Today, we talk about something that everyone has around the world.
It is free. You can do it anywhere. And it makes you feel good! Right! It's laughter.
Laughter can spread easily among people. For example, when we hear someone laughing in a room or on a train, we start laughing too - even if we have no idea why.
In fact, many doctors say if you laugh more often, you will feel happier and live longer. But when you are ill, if you do not take medicine (药), it is wrong.
If one laughs a lot, he or she must be a happy person. You can make friends together. If you can make others laugh with you, it is also a good thing.
As we also like today: Laugh and the world laughs with you; cry and you cry by yourself.
And that's Words and Their Stories today.
I'm Bryan Lynn. Thanks for your listening.
The next morning, John with Mr York takes Ginger and me to Earlshall Park. Mr York is our new groom. He will look after us and give us food to eat. Now he takes us to a large stable. We are happy to see each other.
John says to Mr York, "These horses like a long rein (缰绳). "
But Mr York answers, "Here we use a short rein. My lady wants her horses to hold their heads high. "
John comes to pat and speak to us for the last time. He is very sad because he will leave.
I put my face to him to say goodbye and then he leaves.
At three o'clock in the afternoon Mr York takes us to the front of the house. It is very big. Soon the lady of the house comes out and looks at us. She says nothing, and gets into the carriage. The next day the lady says, "York, you must put those horses' heads higher."
That day I have to pull the carriage up a huge hill with my head up. It is hard and it hurts my back and legs.
One day Mr York fixes the rein very tight. Ginger doesn't like it at all. She rears up. York hits her nose and his hat falls off. She rears again, and kicks. Then she falls down, kicking me too.
They don't put Ginger into the carriage again. I have a new partner called Max. But I have to wear that short rein for four long months. When I finish work, I feel tired and sad.
In my old home Birtwick Park I always feel that John and Squire Gordon are my friends, but here, I have no friends at all.

Many schools and universities are closed to prevent the spread of coronavirus(新冠) among students. However, a break from school does not mean a break from learning. You can spend this free time doing something you never had the time to do.
In fact, Isaac Newton came up with his biggest scientific work while he was at home during the bubonic plague(黑死病)!
In 1665, the bubonic plague broke out across Europe. The University of Cambridge closed and Newton had to return home.
One day, Newton was sitting under an apple tree when an apple fell from the tree and hit his head. He wanted to know why the apple fell straight down. This helped Newton to explore theories of motion and gravity(万有引力). Newton did not let the plague stop him from achieving great things.
So, with schools closed, what are you going to do to pass time? Here are some ideas:
Cook or bake - some delicious cookies will make the whole family happy.
Play a board game - chess is a sport for the mind.
Film a video - many Youtubers start by filming videos at home.
Make art - painting, drawing… fun to design your own pictures.
Make a home for a local animal - spend your break helping animals.
Prepare for a class or future tests - studying for tests or previewing(预习) class material will help you when school starts again.
A break from school brings a lot of free time and endless possibilities. Maybe you will even be the next Isaac Newton!
Look around your class. How many of your classmates wear a pair of glasses?
About 60% of Chinese students had shortsightedness(近视)in 2013. If you find you can't see things clearly, the first thing you should do is to go to the doctor and find out if you have shortsightedness. If you really have shortsightedness, you need right glasses to see things clearly. Wearing glasses is helpful to make your eyes relaxed and slow down the progression(进展)of shortsightedness.
On the other hand, your habit of using your eyes is also important. For example, doing eye exercises at school, spending more time outdoors and looking out of the window.
But life becomes easier for people with glasses. Shortsighted people can wear sunglasses. Some shops including(包括)online shops also sell special glasses for shortsighted people to play sports. For example, with special swimming glasses, shortsighted people can see clearly when swimming. Maybe one day shortsighted people can have special 3-D glasses for TV and movies.
I'm going to my cousin Joan's birthday party tomorrow. Joan is both my cousin and my best f . I a like to share my things with her. I feel so happy! I almost(几乎)can't wait for it.
But w should I wear to the party? Choosing what to wear is not always efor girls. And I am thinking ait.
I think it must be a good ito wear my new blue dress. It makes me look d from other girls. I don't want to be like other girls. And I want to wear my white shoes and a pink hair clip to go wwith the new dress. These three colors look good with each other. Look, am I a b girl in the mirror(镜子)?
I should not forget to m a present for my cousin. I will not buy one in a shop. Only lazy girls buy presents for friends, right? I will make a special present. What is it? It is a secret!
Everything is ready. I am now waiting for a happy party.
