The U.S. Thanksgiving holiday is symbolized by its traditional food, a large bird we call a turkey. But turkey is certainly not from the country Turkey (土耳其). In fact, there is one big mistake about its English name. Let's see what happened.

The word "Turkey" has meant "the country Turkey" since ancient times. The word "turkey" referring to (指的是) the bird first appeared in the English language in the mid-1500s. The misunderstanding over the word happened because of two similar-looking birds.

There is an African bird called the guinea fowl (珍珠鸡). It has dark feathers with white spots and a patch of brown on the back of its neck. Portuguese (葡萄牙的) businessmen brought the guinea fowl to Europe. The bird came to Europe through Turkey. So the European called the bird "turkey".

When Europeans came to North America, they saw a bird that looked like the guinea fowl. The bird was native to North America. But the Europeans thought that it was the guinea fowl, and so gave it the same name.

Hundreds of years later, we continue to call this North American bird "turkey". Actually, it has no connection at all with the country Turkey.

    1. (1) What food is a symbol of the Thanksgiving in the United States?
      A . A tree. B . A turkey. C . A candy. D . A gift.
    2. (2) What did the word "Turkey" mean at first?
      A . The country Turkey. B . The guinea fowl. C . People from Turkey. D . North Americans.
    3. (3) When did the word "turkey" begin to mean the bird turkey?
      A . In 1500. B . In the early 1500s. C . In the mid-1500s. D . In the late 1500s.
    4. (4) Who gave the name "turkey" to the guinea-fowl-like bird in North America?
      A . Portuguese businessmen. B . African people. C . Americans. D . Europeans.
    5. (5) Which could be the best title for this passage?
A . How Did "Turkey" Get its Name? B . Two Similar-looking Birds C . African Turkey and American Turkey D . How to Celebrate Thanksgiving?

Zu Chongzhi was a Chinese mathematician, astronomer and mechanic. He was born in a well-educated family. As excellent engineer, Zu's grandfather taught him science. From an early age, Zu (show) great intelligence and curiosity, with special interests mathematics and astronomy. Today we know Zu Because he was the (one) person to find out that pi falls between 3.1415926 and 3.1415927, and his result remained tht most accurate value in the world for more than 900 years. Zu also worked out the close value of pi to be 355/113, which he called "close ratio". This ratio was so hard to get a Japanese mathematician named it "Zu's ratio".

It is not clear how Zu became interested in (find) the value of pi, yet people have told stories about him. For a long time in the past, people believed that a circle's circumference was three times its diameter. Zu was not sure about this result and wanted to prove it (he). He used a rope (measure) the circumference of a wheel. Then he folded the rope into three equal parts and compared it with the diameter of the wheel. No matter how many wheel he measured, the diameter of the wheel was always (short) than a third of the circumference. As a result, Zu decided to work out a more accurate ratio. After years of hard work, he (final) worked out the value of pi.
