  • 12. (2023高二上·吉州期末) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项A,B,C,D中,选出最佳选项。

Here's a familiar story. You're sitting at the dinner table with your dog. You know you shouldn't give dogs human food, but when you look down, those cute puppy eyes are almost impossible to refuse.

Why does this kind of thing happen? A new study by Japanese scientist, Miho Nagasawa, seems to have found the answer, and it has to do with something called "the cuddle chemical" (拥抱化合物).

In order to better understand how the cuddle chemical works between dogs and humans, Nagasawa and his team conducted an experiment. They tested the levels of the cuddle chemical in dogs and humans, and then put them in a room to interact (互动) with each other.

While in the room, the humans patted the dogs, spoke to the dogs, and looked into the dogs' eyes. Then the scientists tested their levels of the cuddle chemical again.

The researchers found that the levels of the cuddle chemical were higher in both humans and dogs after they had interacted. However, the levels were the highest in the humans and dogs that had simply looked into each other's eyes, without much patting or talking.

The results of this study can also tell us a lot about the history of the bond (关系) between humans and dogs.

It all started tens of thousands of years ago. Wolves used to follow humans when they were hunting. Humans realized that they could use the wolves to help with the hunt, and eventually, both species began to work together toward survival.

Over time, the wolves and humans started to depend on each other. And they started to bond with each other These changes are what caused some of the wolves to turn into what we now know as dogs.

This process depended a great deal on the bond that humans formed with them. And according to Nagasawa's study, the bond was formed with the help of the cuddle chemical.

    1. (1) According to the text, the aim of the experiment was to               .
A . tell people to love their pets B . study the relationship between dogs and wolves C . explain how the cuddle chemical works D . understand the emotions of animals
    2. (2) Which kind of behavior is most effective in increasing levels of the cuddle chemical?
      A . Feeding dogs. B . Patting dogs. C . Speaking to dogs. D . Looking into dogs' eyes.
    3. (3) Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A . Scientists first found the cuddle chemical in wolves B . Some wolves changed into dogs over time. C . Dogs have more cuddle chemicals than wolves. D . Dogs are better at hunting than wolves.
    4. (4) What would be the best title for the text?
      A . Close Human-Dog Bond. B . Slow Wolf-Dog Evolution. C . Owner-Pet Independence. D . Man-Dog Cooperation.

Environmental sustainability(环境可持续性) is one of the greatest challenges facing our planet. As humanity asks itself what it must do to make a change, we know China can lead the world to a greener future. Dependence on fossil (化石) fuels must decrease, driving toward a low-carbon future and the development of an energy source that can reliably serve modern society: nuclear power.

A man I greatly admire, the globally respected financier and environmentalist, Jeremy Grantham, has explained that a world that fails to address the challenges of sustainability is putting its own future in danger.

Mike Tynan, leader of the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre in the UK, is a man whose entire life has been devoted to delivering safe nuclear power. His father was one of the workers who watched the first nuclear power in the world enter the grid(输电网) - part of a generation that worked hard to make the technological advances that helped to build modem society through nuclear energy. Now his son is helping to build the next generation of nuclear technologies

Our leading industry experts at the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, who have seen the competition in nuclear technology develop over the decades, know that it is important to join with China's plan to share the best technology with nations all over the world.

I, too, am personally devoted to this mission, for I have seen the courage of our Chinese students, academics and colleagues, and know just what happens when Chinese dynamism (推动力) is linked to the particular experience of quality manufacturing and creativity for which the UK is rightly known. I would appeal to people to see how deeply serious we are, and this is the right time to turn challenge into opportunity. I hope it will fire the starting gun of a joint Olympic race — perhaps a long-distance one — to a greener, better world.

    1. (1) We can infer from Para. 1 that China is            to lead the world to a greener future.
A . stopping the use of fossil fuels. B . depending on nuclear power. C . developing new technology D . driving less when going out.
    2. (2) What does the underlined word, "address", in the second paragraph probably mean?
      A . Avoid. B . Ignore. C . Tackle. D . Analyze.
    3. (3) From the text, we can learn that Mike Tynan               .
A . is a well-known expert in the world B . was born in a family devoted to nuclear power C . saw the first stage of nuclear power development D . wants to help to develop new nuclear technologies
    4. (4) What is the main idea of this text?
A . We should develop nuclear power to protect our environment. B . We should face the challenges faced by our planet. C . We should share advanced technologies. D . We should encourage people to join an Olympic race.

Having a microchip implanted in a man's brain may be common in sci-fi movie plots, but it may soon become an actual possibility.

Elon musk, founder of Space X and co-founder of electric car maker Tesla — has been working on this technology. On Aug 28, Musk gave display of the chip, which was implanted into the head of a pig named Gertrude.

The chip, developed by Musk's company, is the size of a coin. But don't let its size fool you. The tiny chip has over 3,000 electrodes(电极)attached to flexible threads, which can monitor about 1,000 neurons (神经元). It collects neural signals from an area of the brain, and then transmits those signals wirelessly to nearby computers. In the display, Gertrude could be seen walking around her pen sniffing the ground while a monitor showed her brain activity.

Though the technology is still in its early stage, it is encouraging for humans. This technology would solve a lot of brain injuries, which will allow the human brain to combine with an artificial intelligence.

When the device can be applied to humans, its main goal will be to help those who are incapable of moving freely. Musk hopes this technology can also be used to help those with hearing and eyesight issues and one day lead to a cure for epilepsy (癫痫).

Although such a device could, in principle, repair those problems, putting it into practice is by no means a piece of cake. Currently, the device can transmit signals from about 500 neurons in the pig's brain. Compared to 80 billion neurons in a human brain, this number is tiny. And to cover the whole human brain also means the electrodes have to be much smaller.

Also, implanting the chip into the brain poses a potential danger. There is a risk of the immune system attacking this foreign body.

Right now, the hope of controlling the brain via controlling a few neurons seems overly optimistic. "There are many technological challenges to overcome before Neuralink can put its devices to the purposes," Yuan Lanfeng, an associate professor at the University of Science and Technology of China, told China Daily.

    1. (1) What do we know about Elon Musk's microchip according to the first three paragraphs?
A . It was inspired by sci-fi movie plots. B . It is able to collect wireless signals. C . It is tiny in size but powerful in function. D . It has been implanted into a human's brain.
    2. (2) What do paragraphs 6-7 mainly talk about?
A . Potential problems in applying the chip to human. B . Key differences between pigs' and humans' brains. C . The amount of time and money implanting the chip could cost. D . How the immune system is the major obstacle to the implant.
    3. (3) What is the major target of the microchip in human application?
A . To monitor animals' brain activity. B . To help people with difficulty in moving freely. C . To develop a cure for epilepsy. D . To contribute to the research on AI technologies.
    4. (4) How does Yuan Lanfeng feel about implanting the chip into the human brain?
      A . Worried. B . Excited. C . Optimistic. D . Cautious.

Christmas Day was coming. I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus. I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told me the truth. Grandma was home, and I told her everything. She was ready for me. "No Santa Claus!" She shouted. "Ridiculous! Don't believe it. That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad.

"Now, put on your coat, and let's go."

"Go where, Grandma?" I asked. "Where" turned out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. "Take this money." she said, "and buy something for someone who needs it. I'll wait for you in the car." Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's.

I was only eight years old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother. but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock's grade-two class.

Bobby Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for recess(休息)during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn't have a cough, and he didn't have a coat. I fingered the ten dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red one. which looked really warm, and he would like that.

"Is this a Christmas present for someone?" the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down. "Yes."

The nice lady smiled at me, put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.
