This is the word "family" written in Chinese "家". It's a pictographic character (象形文字). The "宀" looks like the roof (屋顶) of a house, and the "豖" is a pictographic character for "pig", which is developed from a picture like this:
The word "家" with a pig under the roof of a house may show the importance of domestic animals (家畜) to traditional Chinese families.
There is a strong feeling between parents, children and other family members. The father is usually very strict with their children. Parents work very hard to set a good example for their children, while children study hard. Brothers and sisters in the family are very friendly and helpful to each other. All the family members make an effort to live a happy life.
Our ancestors (祖先) will be part of our life and a warm memory forever. ▲ We remember our ancestors, not for any advantages for ourselves but to make our feelings more active. Whenever we think of them, they make us stronger inside.
Everyone values the idea of "making all the members of the family happy". We should all have this same idea as the great "China dream". There are thousands of families in China, just because every family goes well, China is getting better and better.
Why is the sea salt? Long before we discovered scientific ways of thinking about it, we explained it in a story. Even though the answer isn't scientific, it holds some other truth in it— especially about the human heart.
Long ago, a poor old couple lived on the coast. One day, an old storyteller came to their village. The old couple gave him a meal. In return, he gave them a coffee mill(磨粉机) and said, "Say, 'Mill, please grind(磨粉)', and it'll make whatever you want. To stop it, say 'Mill, please cease(停止) grinding'. "
Soon the old couple had a much better life. They'd been happy people, and they didn't need much more. But the young couple next door were never satisfied. When they saw the old couple wearing good clothes and buying good food, they burnt with envy(羡慕). So one day, the young husband went to the old couple's house secretly and heard," Mill, please grind hot chocolate!" He was surprised to see it coming out.
Then the young couple stole the mill from the old couple. With it, they rode a horse and set off down the coast, where no one would know them. Along the way, the husband showed proudly and asked, "What do you want it to make?" "Oh. I don't know. Why not salt?" the wife said. "Mill, please grind salt!" he said. "It works!" the wife shouted. But then they noticed the salt went everywhere. "Make it stop," the wife said. But the husband didn't know how. "Mill, please stop grinding! Please, no more!" His words didn't work. The mill kept grinding. Finally, the young husband threw the mill into the sea as far as he could.
And there it's been, for hundreds of years, endlessly grinding salt. That's why the sea is salt.
a. It began to produce salt.
b. The young husband threw it.
c. The young couple stole it.
d. The old couple got it.

Teachers are often considered to be engineers of the human soul. But there's one person in China who is called the "teacher of teachers".
He is Chinese educator Tao Xingzhi. Last year marked the 130 anniversary of his birth. People in different parts of China commemorated (纪念)Tao by visiting his memorial halls or holding meetings to reflect on his thoughts on education.
Born in Anhui province, China, 1891, Tao studied at Columbia University, US, in1914. . But when Tao returned to China in 1917 and began his own career as an educator, he did not blindly copy Dewey's education method or theories. For Tao, education is an active process in real-life experiences rather than one of telling and being told. He proposed(提出)"unity(融合) of teaching, learning, and reflective acting".
After conducting surveys in Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai in 1921, Tao was surprised to learn that the rate of urban illiteracy(文盲) in China went beyond 70 percent. To deal with the lack of teachers and money, in 1927, Tao set up Xiaozhuang Normal Collage(晓庄师范学院) in the northern suburbs of Nanjing to train teachers and educators, most of whom became teachers at rural schools.
He set up Yucai Middle School in the suburbs of Chongqing and offered free education to refugee (避难)children after the Japanese invasion of China began in 1937.
Maybe Tao's motto is the best explanation for his life, "Giving a whole heart, yet taking nothing in return, not even a leaf of grass.

A. Do you make eye contact (交流)? When you make eye contact; you're telling someone that you're interested in him or her, that you think the person is important, and that you want to hear what he or she has to say. B. Do you talk with toys? Do you play with pens, tap your fingers, or clear your throat when you're talking with someone? These manners might make others uncomfortable, who may take you less seriously. C. Do you speak too fast? This is one of the most common communication problems. A slow speed of speech shows the importance of the message you're expressing. Talking to people in an unhurried manner also gives the listener time to get what you have said. D. Do you interrupt? People who cut others off in mid-sentence not only send an unkind message, but also they cut themselves out of the communication process. Remember that we can learn more from listening than from talking. E. Do you avoid over speak? Aristotle (亚里士多德) said, "Think as the wise do, but speak as the common do." Don't use big or difficult words. If others can't understand every time you open your mouth, and you may feel sorry for using "over speak" F. Do you eat while you're talking? The next time you have a conversation with someone, never talk with your mouth full of food. Such behavior makes people awful. |
