My father was a farmer. He worked very hard and never complained. He has never gone to school. So, he was a common man 1  little education. But he would teach my sister and2  lessons through stories.

Deep in the mountains in Longshan Town, Longli County in southwest China's Guizhou Province, there are some artists performing (演出) Taiping lantern opera. This art form began more than 300 years ago.

The members of the troupe (剧团) are at ages from 8 to 87 years old and most of them are farmers. They are usually busy in the fields and only get together to practice their shows and teach the ancient art to younger people after finishing their farm work.

On holidays, they visit nearby villages to perform for villagers, making their cultural lives wonderful and enjoyable. The troupe members are always greeted with a warm welcome by the local people.

Taiping lantern opera is a local opera in Longli County, Guizhou Province. It puts singing and dancing together. Taiping lantern opera has developed into a more colorful art form. What's more, you can communicate with the actors during the performance.

All the performers paint their faces with beautiful paints. They like to wear ancient clothes. The local people love them very much for their wonderful singing, excellent performance and true living style.

When I arrived at his house the next Thursday, four or five men were already here. The doctor was standing in front of the fire with his watch in one hand and a piece of paper in the other.

"It's half past seven now," he said. "Shall we start dinner?"

"Where is the time traveler?" I asked. "Shouldn't we wait for him? We are guests in his house."

"I have a note from him," the doctor said, holding up the piece of paper. "It says he will be late and that we should start dinner first."

"In that case," the editor of a newspaper said, "let's go into the dining room."

He rang the bell to tell the housekeeper that we were ready to eat.

Not all the men present knew about the model of the time machine. Only the doctor and the psychologist knew. During dinner, we described the model to the other guests. I suggested, jokingly, that perhaps our host was late because he was traveling in time. The laughter suddenly changed to shock, however, when the door opened, and the time traveler stood there.

His clothes were dirty and torn. His face was white, and his chin had a cut on it.

What comes to your mind when you think of kung fu? Maybe Shaolin monks (和尚) with a serious look in their eyes. But does it really show the meaning of kung fu? 

Laurence J. Brahm, a documentary filmmaker from the United States, looked for the answer in Searching for Kung Fu. In the movie, Brahm traveled to cities in China and the US to search for the value of kung fu.

Brahm himself is a kung fu lover. He has been practicing the art for more than 40 years. For him, it is more than fun. Ages ago, Brahm was unable to use one of his legs for two years. But by practicing kung fu, he was able to get well step by step. Now, kung fu has become a daily activity for him and also the way he begins the day. 

Still, there are other deep meanings in the practice. Peace is one value, which is shown both in the name and practice of kung fu. The Chinese character Wu (武) has two parts — ge, meaning "to fight", and zhi, meaning "to stop". So, the meaning of kung fu in Chinese is the art of stopping fighting. Kung fu artists always greet people with baoquan. This lets each person know that there are no hidden weapons (武器) and shows trust. 

"The lasting values of kung fu, actually, are in the minds of all Chinese people," Brahm said.

Joey was born with club feet (畸形足). The doctors said that he could walk, but would never run very well. 

In Grade 7, he decided to join in the running team and trained every day. He knew he ran slower.  Only the top seven runners could score for school. His parents didn't tell him that he probably would never score. So he didn't know.

He continued to run four or five miles a day, even when he had a fever. His father was worried and went to look for him after school.  He asked Joey how he felt. "Okay," he said, looking very tired.  His parents never told him that he couldn't run four miles with a high fever. So he didn't know.

Two weeks later, the names of the team runners were called.  He was in the seventh grade. But the other members were all eighth-graders. His parents never told him he couldn't do it. 

He just did it.

Playing diabolo, also called Dou Kong Zhu in Chinese, is a popular game with a history of over 600 years. Traditional diabolos are m of bamboo. Many students in some northern schools in China like playing diabolo very much. They become f of the game because it is cool and interesting. You can play diabolo well by c your body and strength. It can bring you a f of happiness. More importantly, it can exercise your brain. Playing diabolo now is s a famous game that many foreigners are also trying to play it. Why not have a try for yourself?

Diving is a popular sport today. This sport takes you into a wonderful new world. When you are under the water, it is not difficult for you to move around, because you are no longer heavy.

Here, under the sea, everything is blue and green. During the day, there is enough light. When fish swim nearby, you can catch them with your hands.

When you have tanks (罐) of air on your back, you can stay in deep water for a long time. But you must be careful when you dive in deep water, which can be quite dangerous.

To catch fish is one of the most exciting parts of this sport. Besides, there are more interesting things about diving. You can see different kinds of living things from the amazing undersea world.
