Several days ago, when I was walking my pet dog in the park, I saw a group of boys bullying(欺凌) a small and thin boy. They were calling him names and even1him to the ground and kicked dirt in his face.2 I saw that, I walked over to the group.
I went over to stand3them and the small boy, and asked them politely what this boy had done worthy of what they were doing to him. One of the boys4, "He's weird. "At that moment, I asked one of the boys if he thought his friend was weird, and the5was "No." Then I asked another boy what the word "weird" 6, and he said, "Different. "That was my cue (暗示). I told them that everyone is7. They all stood 8 for a moment, and then the most amazing thing happened. One of the boys helped the small boy off the ground and then said sorry to him. He9to let him play with them.
I thanked the boy for being so10. As I looked around, I realized that there were dozens of other people at the11, but no one else had stopped to help this boy. I felt happy that the boy was brave enough to stand up against his friends to12someone in need, but I felt sad that13else had even taken a second look.
I hope what I did helped them14that they could have made a difference with a little effort. And maybe next time they will be the ones who choose to give others a15.
Welcome to the Olympic Games! |

Archery has a 10, 000-year history, when bows and arrows were first used for hunting(打猎)and war. Archery first appeared at the Paris Olympics of 1900. It was removed after1908 and only returned to the Olympics at Munich in 1972. |
|
This sport was invented by British soldiers in India who called it Poono, the same name as the town in which they lived. It was first played at the Olympics in 1992 at Barcelona. Although the rules of the modern sport were developed in England, Asian countries are now the best. |
|
There are two medal competitions for Olympic football, one for men's teams and one for women's. Football was first played at the 1908 Olympic Games and it has been played at every Olympic Games ever since, except for Los Angeles 1932. |
|
This Korean sport's name means "the way of the hand and foot". The players get points by hitting each other with these two parts of the body only. The players mustn't lie on the floor and no equipment can be used. Taekwondo first appeared at the 2000 Sydney Games. |
It has been more than 2000 years since we began to use an umbrella on rainy days. However, people often felt it not convenient to hold an umbrella while working. Then the rubber raincoat was invented by an Englishman named Macintosh in 1823.
In 1492, Columbus, a well-known Italian voyager, discovered the New World — the America. He brought a lot of things to Europe from South America. Rubber was one of them, but people didn't know the use of rubber at that time. In 1770, people found that the rubber could be used as erasers.
Macintosh was a worker in an eraser factory in Scotland. One day he spilled(泼出)the rubber liquid(液体)over his clothes carelessly when making erasers. He was too busy to clean it and went back home wearing the dirty clothes. On the way home, it rained heavily. Having no umbrella, Macintosh had to run home quickly. When he got home, he took off the wet clothes. To his surprise, the area of the clothes with rubber wasn't wet. "Why not make a rubber raincoat?" Macintosh thought. The next day he brushed the rubber liquid all over a coat. He wore the "rubber coat" on rainy days and took a walk in the field to test if it could really keep off the rain. Surprisingly, the clothes inside the "rubber coat" weren't wet at all. The rubber raincoat was created in this way by chance.
The rubber raincoats soon appeared on the market. However, they were sticky(粘的) in summer and hardened in winter. Year after year, people kept on improving the raincoats. Today raincoats are widely used in our daily life.
Tom Sawyer first appeared in Mark Twain's book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. He also appears in three other books by Twain. Tom is a child whose parents are dead. His curiosity(好奇心)and friendship with a boy named Huckleberry Finn often get him into trouble with his serious Aunt Polly.
The silly characters in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland were created by Lewis Carroll. In the1865 book, a young girl named Alice falls down a rabbit hole and drops into a strange land. As she travels through the land, she meets many characters, solves puzzles(难题) and tries to avoid the awful Queen of Hearts. Carroll was very bright and he had a degree in math from Oxford. When he wrote the book, he also added math puzzles to the story. As they were so well hidden, many readers today still enjoy trying to find and solve these puzzles.
Lord of the Flies was written by William Golding. The book is about a group of young boys. They are forced to stay on an island together after their plane has an accident. As they wait for help, they try to live off the land and build a small society. However, the boys don't get along, and have trouble keeping the peace. The book was published in 1954. By the early 1960s, it was taught in many schools in Britain. Two films have also been made of the story.
The Catcher in the Rye was written by J. D. Salinger, an American writer, and it was published in 1951. The Catcher in the Rye is about a l6-year-old boy called Holden Caulfield who has made lots of trouble and is asked to leave school. Holden doesn't want his parents to find out what has happened, so for three days he stays in New York City, where he has lots of unusual experiences. The Catcher in the Rye was named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. What's more, it has been compared by many people to Mark Twain's classic The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn_— which, by the way, is next on my reading list!
①It is common to surf the Internet at home now. However, a recent survey showed over 90% of parents are not clear what websites their children visit. I strongly believe that a training project should be started to help parents to improve their Internet and computer skills. Then they can better monitor and guide their children.
② Providing training would get parents to pay more attention to their children's online activities. This is one advantage. If parents had a better understanding of the internet and websites, they would see the need to make sure that their children use it properly and responsibly.
③Providing training to parents would allow parents to help their children with their schoolwork as well. These days, some homework of online courses needs to be done on computer. If parents have poor computer skills, they will be of little or no help with the homework. That can make parents very upset. Some people argue that it is good that students can work independently on computers. However, it is clear that students, especially young students often need this kind of home support.
④) Improving parents' Internet and computer skills might also be a good way for parents to improve their relationships with their children. These days, children spend a lot of their free time on computers. If parents want to be part of their free time, they need to see that playing on computers can be a fun family activity. Joining their children can help parents bridge the gap between them and their children.
⑤Most people believe that children need to be helped and guided to use the Internet in a proper and responsible way. Therefore, training is extremely important.
