This Teacher Lives Underwater
SOUTH AFRICAN filmmaker Craig Foster was diving(潜水) near where he grew up. One day, he found her, a shy octopus(章鱼) was putting on a "suit" of shells(壳).
"What is she doing there? Foster was interested in this magical(神奇的) animal. He visited her and followed her for two hours every day. For weeks, the octopus fell afraid and hid herself. Foster kept trying to win her heart. Finally, after 26 days, she reached out and touched him!
Foster spent about a year studying her. He watched her learn, play and recover from injury (伤口). The filmmaker made the friendship between them into the documentary(纪录片) My Octopus Teacher. The film has become a hit.
In Foster's eyes, the octopus was a teacher. The man learned a lot from her. The greatest lesson she taught him was about our place in nature. We humans are not just visitors to this planet(行星). We are part of the natural world around us. As we get closer to our animal friends, we will find we are similar to them in many ways.
So talk to a dog or pat a cat. Watch how birds sing to make friends. On this amazing planet, we do have many wonderful neighbors(邻居)!
My school in the US just opened, but the COVID-19 is still a problem there. I had to stay in China and took online classes that were given by my school in Boston.
My teachers try to make their classes more interesting. My English teacher shows us memes (表情包) and plays music as part of her class.
Because of the time difference, I have to stay up late. I have to set alarms (定闹钟) to wake me up, as class goes from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., while in China we start at 8:00 a.m. Because I'm the only student in my class who is studying online, my teachers like to put me on a big screen. Everyone can see me yawn (打哈欠) clearly.
After my classes are over, I go to sleep at once. Sometimes, I try to enjoy the sun going up beautifully for a while. So far, so good!
Wolves live in the northern half of the world. They can live in forests on open plains, or in the snows of the Arctic(北极). They look like big dogs (A) ________ long legs and a wide head.
In fact, all of our dogs probably came from wolves many years ago.①
They are about two meters long and three quarters of a meter tall. If a wolf gets enough food, it can weigh about 40 to 50 kilograms. Wolves usually eat small animals such as rabbits. But they also hunt together to try to kill big animals. If they catch and kill a big animal, they eat as much as they can.②
Wolves live in groups. (B) 每组中大约有六至八匹狼。Only one pair of wolves will have cubs(幼崽), (C) but all the members of the group will help to look after the cubs patiently. If the cubs are in danger, the whole group will protect them.③
People often think that wolves are dangerous animals, (D) ________ this is not true. Wild wolves are usually afraid of humans. If you are in a forest and see a wolf, it will probably run away from you.
A great French writer said we should help each other as much as we can because we often need help ourselves. The small even can help the great.
An ant was drinking at a small river and fell in. The poor ant got too tired but was still doing her best when a big bird saw her. With it the ant reached the bank in the end. While she was resting and drying herself in grass, the ant heard a man coming up. He was walking without shoes on his feet and carrying a gun in his hand.
However, before he could fire his gun, the ant bit (咬) him in one of his feet. The man gave out a loud cry. It was an animal much weaker and smaller than the bird that had saved her life.
A. She tried her best to reach the river side, but she couldn't move at all.
B. As soon as the man saw the bird, he pointed his gun at her.
C. The bird felt sorry for the ant and threw a piece of wood to her.
D. Hearing the sound, the bird flew away at once.
E. About this, the writer told the following story.
Do you know Canada? Now let's get to (know) it. It is one of the largest (country) in the world. It's in north the U.S. The (capital) is Ottawa. There (be) about 37 million people. Many of them can speak two (language)—English and (France). Niagara Falls is famous all the world. Canada's flag has leaf on it. It's red. And its (nation) animal is beaver. I hope I can visit Canada one day.
Rainforests are in the tropical regions (热带) of the Earth. The trees are u very tall. Lots of rainfall helps them grow and live. The trees p a home and food for many living things. Half of the world's animal species (物种), such as monkeys, elephants and tigers, live in the rainforests. So rainforests are an i part of the Earth.
After the trees are cut down, many of these animals have nowhere to live. Each day, we are losing hundreds of species of animals and plants. If we do not p the rainforests now, we will never see them again. So e of us should take action right now.
