PROBLEMS
Alice: Yesterday, at the beginning of the chemistry exam, I spent more time on a difficult question than I intended. When I saw the others turning to the next page, I became so nervous that I couldn't even work out simple questions. I really want to know how to control myself in exams. Could you give me some advice?
Rob: I'm trying to review for my exams, but it's hard to concentrate for long. I sit on the bed with my books, but then I lie down and fall asleep. And my parents ask me to do things or my friends call, so I give up studying. I'm starting to panic. What should I do?
Lara: I get good marks at school, so my friends all want to copy my homework. But I spend a lot of time working while they're having fun. It's not fair, and I'm getting fed up with this situation. But how do I tell them they can't copy my work—I don't want to lose my friends. Help!
ADVICE
Concentrate on the exam. Don't daydream or be distracted by the other test takers. Some students do exams quickly, but this doesn't necessarily mean they get all questions right. Just stick to your own pace!
If you can not focus on your review, you can make a daily plan to remind yourself or why not develop a good learning habit?
Cheating is not good for studying. Having a heart to heart talk with friends who wants to copy may be useful.
When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn't a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, then he asked. "Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn't you ever wonder what you're really like? Well, you now have that girl's opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said. "
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn't change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. " That's just for you," he said. " You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you'll find it will be of help to you.
Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don't shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do. " Daddy's advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I've never had a better piece of advice.
A very dangerous situation happened in California last week. More than 12 wildfires broke out in the state. Most of them began on October 8, in Northern California. They grew rapidly. The fires were made bigger by winds of up to 50 miles per hour and dry air in the area.
At least 20 people have been killed, the state government said. About 200 have been injured. At least 3,500 homes and businesses have been destroyed. About 50,000 people have been required to escape. Many left in a hurry, without time to take their personal things. "All the good stuff (东西) —I'm never going to see it again," Jeff Okrepkie said. He escaped from his Santa Rosa home. It was destroyed soon after he left.
The fires burned through parts of eight counties (郡,县). These include Sonoma and Napa. The areas are important to California's economy (经济). They are home to many of the state's vineyards (葡萄园) and wineries (酿酒厂). In 2016, California's wineries made more than $57 billion.
October is when wildfires usually produce the most ruins in California. But it is unusual for so many fires to start at once. Up to now, the government has not given a cause for any of the fires, many of which were still burning.
We all know the saying, "Nobody is perfect." It has been planted in our brains since we were children, and of course, it is the truth. So if nobody is perfect, why do we have such a hard time admitting when we are in trouble or need help?
Like many other young people trying to get through their first year of college, I felt anxiety, and it had its grips on me pretty tight. It began getting in the way of my life, and I had to sit down and tell myself that my behavior was not healthy and there was a solution. Finally, I decided to turn to therapy(精神疗法).
Therapy. It has such a negative stigma (污名), but why? Does going to therapy mean that you are failing as a person or that you cannot fix your problems on your own? No. Going to therapy means that you are strong enough to recognize that something inside your head is not working correctly, and you are brave enough to try to fix it.
After a couple of weeks, many parts of my life became so much clearer. I began to understand that I, myself, am my worst enemy, which was pretty frightening. But, although frightened, I knew that it was only I who could guide me towards feeling better, and that was extremely empowering.
I have been guided towards a healthier mindset, one that is positive and powerful. I have been able to understand that no matter what happens in my life. I will always be okay.
A lot of people do not understand that it is normal to have negative feelings and sometimes to feel like we have lost control over certain parts of our lives. Seeing a therapist can greatly change your way of thinking about something if you keep your mind open and I am so thankful that I decided to go and do something for myself.
If you are in need of help, you can go to therapy and then everything will be okay.
Sleep advice for kids of all ages
It is important for each child to get enough sleep every day. Here we will learn more about that.
How much sleep does a child need?
Newborns 0 to 3 months should sleep 10 to 18 hours a day. Babies 4 to 11 months should start to sleep through the night, for 9 to 12 hours at a time. Toddlers(初学走路的孩子) 1 to 2 years need about 11 to 14 hours a day. Children 3 to 5 should get 11 to 13 hours a night. Teenagers 14 and up need 8 to 10 hours of sleep.
What can parents do?
Set a strict nap(小睡) timetable. Even older children can benefit from late-afternoon naps if they are not getting enough sleep at night. But keep them short— 30 minutes at most.
Remember to ask your children to turn off the television and the computer an hour before bed. If possible, get them out of your child's bedroom since the light from electronic screens can make sleep a difficult job.
Get them moving. Running around and playing sports is great, but kids can be active in other ways, too. Take the dog for a walk, or go to the park — just get them out of the house and get them moving.
A. Pay attention to screen time.
B. It usually depends on their age.
C. It's OK to go to bed 30 minutes later.
D. Kids 6 to 13 need 9 to 11 hours of sleep.
E. Younger children should take a short sleep during the day.
F. Energy drinks can keep kids from falling or staying asleep.
G. Exercise during the day helps children sleep better at night.
Star Athlete
My name is Edward, and at one time I was the star athlete at my school for four consecutive (连续的) years. Soccer was my life for as 1as I could remember. For at 2six times a week, you could find me at the fields training. Within those past four years, I had3sixty goals for my team. I even starred in our local newspaper.
Most athletes asked me how I did it. How I 4to go out once or twice a day to train. Most athletes would be5out, but not me. I asked them how they just naturally breathed. Football had been my life ever since I was five years old. Having two parents that played the game6me to become the best athlete I could ever be. My whole family played; not7was like not eating at my grandma's house, not acceptable. When I was three, my parents taught me how to kick the ball, and that was when I8fell in love with the game.
But that was past. When I was working up to the state championship, I got injured and the trainer told me I could never play again. I cried and my 9was torn into pieces. Later, I10myself back up and went to Vanderbilt University on an academic scholarship. I might not be a super star, but I11to let my life slip out of my hands. Now, I'm on my way to becoming a doctor to help12like me. Sometimes I wonder who I would be without my injury, but then I realize I would not have had this opportunity. Things change13, and you have to learn to 14it. Stop living in the past and live in the future. Everyone has a story, but you have to make your own ending. It's up to you to persevere and fight for yourself. Be your own 15.

New Year was just around the corner. I was second grade then, 7 years old. One day, on my way home from school, a lady gave me a piece of paper saying that the neighborhood was asking people to give New Year presents to those who needed them. When I got home, I showed my mother the paper and said that I wanted to take part in this plan. My mother thought this was a very good idea and encouraged me to spread kindness to others less fortunate than us. She said we would become "Neighborhood Angels (天使)".
Several days later, my mother said, "Get ready, and we will go." "Where are we going?" I asked my mother. "I will drive you to Boots Department Store to buy something you think would be suitable for a neighborhood present. " she replied. As we went into the store, my mother gave me £20 to pay for the present. Then she said, "I'll see you outside in the car." She left me alone to do the shopping. I was not used to buying things on my own, as I had always been with one of my parents before. Everything seemed very strange and confusing to me, but I carried on. I asked myself what I should buy and for whom. An idea quickly occurred to me. There was a poor boy called Ralph who lived in our neighborhood. I used to see him often without a jacket during the freezing winter months, so I decided, then and there, to buy him a warm jacket.
I looked at many jackets and eventually chose a heavy blue one. The price was just within my spending limit. The assistant at the checkout asked, "Is this for someone?", as I paid for the jacket happily. I said it was, and she wished me a Happy New Year. I felt as if I were a real "Neighborhood Angel".
Paragraph 1:
That evening, my mother helped me pack the jacket in beautiful paper.
Paragraph 2:
My mother and I waited breathlessly for Ralph's front door to open and finally it opened.
