Before I went to Chiang Rai(清莱), I had been traveling around Thailand with six of my friends. We had a1time. But on the seventh day, my friends all had to go back home, while I had decided to stay there for another week.
Seeing my friends off at the airport, I felt a little 2. The three-hour bus ride to Chiang Rai was not easy for me. It was my first3 to be all alone while traveling abroad. The thought of loneliness made me nervous. I tried to 4it by looking out of the window to watch the beautiful countryside.
5a short rest, I arrived at Chiang Rai. I got off the bus and looked for a6 to my hotel. Unluckily, I failed to find one in sight. I 7how I could go to my hotel.
I'm sure the look of8showed on my face. Before I knew it, a policeman had caught a taxi for me. A smile9on my face at the kindness of this stranger. I was lucky to meet10in my lonely journey. And as I climbed into the taxi, the driver was11to drive for free because the hotel I had booked was just around the corner.
As I walked into the hotel, I was also greeted with beautiful12. A friendly hotel worker talked with me 13while leading me to my comfortable room.
Suddenly, I realized I no longer felt nervous as I was deeply moved by the strangers' kind14. Sitting alone in my room, I started to 15 my trip around Chiang Rai. I took a good rest and started off the next morning with a smile on my face.

Beijing Opera, the most important of all the operas in China, has a long history of nearly 200 years. In 1790, at the time of the Qing Dynasty (朝代), four big opera groups from Anhui came to Beijing and combined (联合)Kun Opera, Luantan, Yiyang Opera and Han Opera to create a new one. After over half a century(世纪) of combining and developing, there came Beijing Opera now we watch.
Before1919, foreigners knew little about Beijing Opera. But now it has spread to many other places. Mei Lanfang, one of the greatest artists, first performed Beijing Opera in Japan and America, which made it known by the world. After the year 1949, China sent opera groups out. It made Beijing Opera become famous and get popular with people all over the world. Nowadays you can see traveling groups of Beijing Opera players in many foreign cities and their local Chinatowns. Beijing Opera has become a bridge between China and the West.
In Beijing, the best place to enjoy Beijing Opera is Li Yuan Theater. Many artists often play there. LiYuan means pear garden in Chinese. In the past, opera players trained in it.

I still remember some of the experiments we did in school. One day, we wore a blindfold(眼罩) to pretend to be blind(瞎的). Then, on another day, we wore headphones to experience being deaf(聋的). But I don't remember talking about not having a sense(感觉) of smell. In fact, I didn't know that some people couldn't smell until I met Max Christian. Christian was born without a sense of smell. This condition is called anosmia. In the United States alone, more than two million people have anosmia.
So what is life like for these people? Well, having no sense of smell means a loss of taste. To taste foods, we need not only our tongues but also our noses—to smell the foods. "Water, apple juice, coffee. I can never tell the difference between their tastes!" Christian says.
Life also gets a lot more dangerous without a sense of smell. Think of the times you've left something on the oven for too long. The first sign(标志) of danger that an anosmic person is able to notice is the smoke(烟).
Like Christian, many anosmic people are born with the condition. Since they can never smell, they never miss smells. But some people get anosmia later in life. Most of these people become depressed about losing their sense of smell. Alice Cox became anosmic after a head hit years ago." I miss the smell of my son's hair and the smell of flowers, "she says. "I've lost an important part of my life that is common to everyone else."
It was a warm spring day in 2021. Chen Beier, a reporter from Hong Kong, was on her way to a small village called Atule'er. The small village sits at the top of a high cliff(悬崖). People can only get up to it by climbing a 2, 556-step steel ladder (钢梯). It is very dangerous.
So, was Chen looking for adventure(冒险) there? The answer is no. The reporter was trying to show people something.
In February 2021, China got rid of poverty(摆脱贫困). Many people couldn't believe this, because China has a large number of poor villages. To show the truth to people, Chen went to make No Poverty Land.
The trip was so hard. When she was halfway up the ladder to Atul'er, for example, Chen felt so tired that she could hardly go any further. She was also afraid of heights. The villagers advised her to stop the climb, but the woman didn't stop.
This steel ladder, in fact, is only six years old. Before it was built, the villagers had to face even bigger danger and use a rattan(藤条制成的) ladder. The government (政府) also built houses for the villagers at the foot of the mountain. Through No Poverty Land, people can easily see how life in poor places of China has been improved.
China has changed (改变) a lot, but some people just find it hard to believe. Now, Chen has shown us what we can do about that: Don't just tell people about the great changes, show them when you can.
Jacanas, a kind of water birds, usually live in tropical(热带的) areas all over the world. Here's an introduction about them.
Jacanas are medium-size birds. Their bodies are about 31-58 cm long. Baby jacanas weigh about 40g at birth. But when they grow up, they can be up to 275g in weight. Female jacanas are bigger than male jacanas.
Jacanas are colorful birds. That's why many people love them. Their bodies are usually brown. They also have black, white and yellow colors on their heads and necks. Male and female jacanas are the same colors.
Jacanas' eggs are deep brown in color with dark lines. The lines look like paint on the eggs which make the eggs very special. The eggs are also shiny. When they are among the plants in the water, the shiny eggs are not so easy to be found.
Female jacanas and male jacanas have their own different roles. As a role of parent, the male jacana has to build a comfortable nest for the female jacana to lay eggs. Besides, he also needs to take good care of the eggs until the babies come out. Then, it's his turn to teach the young jacanas how to look for food.

l once worked as a volunteer(志愿者) at a Children's Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. (I) job was to help make the kids feel happy when they were staying in the hospital. Sounds interesting, right? some people can't understand why I did it.
Let me show you. My (one) reason was to help create a better future for people. Look at the children in the hospital where I worked. They (feel) scared and lonely facing all the difficulties because their parents had other kids to care for. So, why not try (help) as many people as possible?
Also, volunteering in Africa and helping people there let me see other (part) of this planet. And volunteering at the hospital opened window for me to touch the unknown world. I met people from all over the world, each with their own ideas, experiences and dreams. We got to share so much with each other (happy).
I really felt close these people. We shared amazing memories and grew together. Now I go back to my country with the new experiences and ideas so that, together, we can help (many) people and create a better future for everyone!
