My dad's biggest dream is to sail (航行) around the world on a sailing ship. He and his best friend always talk about it.
This summer, they decided to rent(租)a1and take the two families for a one - week vacation. That way, they could test out(检验)their skills.
On a2day, we rented a nice houseboat and began our adventure(冒险) at a lake. Everything went well the first day. The water was quiet and3. There was no wind and everyone was happy. It felt like their dream was coming true.
But the next day, when we sailed to the river connected to the lake, a strong wind came up. Our boat started to rock on the waves(波浪). It was a little scary. The mothers 4the kids tightly (紧紧地). No one was laughing or even talking.
As the river got wider and wider, the waves were even bigger. The wind was pushing 5boat far away from land. My dad had 6controlling the boat. He decided that we should go back.
My dad and his friend7to bring the boat back to a place where the water was calm(平静的). They said that it would be safer8we stayed there. "We have learned a good lesson, "Dad said." It is good to have dreams, but it is better to test them out before you act on them."
Dad's dream is 9to sail around the world one day. He knows that dreams will be10if you really want them to. He also knows that he has a lot to learn before he sets out on the open ocean.
In the Chinese idiom (成语) xinkou cihuang, what does cihuang mean?
The Chinese. idiom xinkou cihuang refers to someone speaking out in an irresponsible(不负责任的)way. Cihuang is a kind of mineral (矿物). In the past, for some time, people in China used yellow. - colored paper. Cihuang is about the same color. So when people wanted to correct(纠正)something on paper, they used cihuang.
There is a story behind the idiom. Wang Yan was an official(官员) during the Western Jin Dynasty. He liked talking about philosophy(哲学). But his ideas were often wrong. People sometimes pointed this out to Wang. But he didn't think it was a big problem. He'd just correct himself and go on like nothing happened. So people started to call him xinkou cihuang. The idea is that Wang always kept a piece of cihuang in his mouth so that he could correct anything he had just said.
Many foreigners in Shanghai are not good at Chinese. In the spring of 2022, some young English teachers worked as volunteers to help them during their quarantine(隔离期). Rachel is one of the volunteers. She connected Evan, a businessman from Canada who is in his quarantine with his wife, through WeChat. Let's have a look at their conversations.
According to the Ministry of Education, students of primary and junior high schools will receive new labor(劳动) education from this term. They will take no less than one class in labor skills a week. They'll learn everything from everyday chores like cleaning, cooking and the use of home appliances(器具)to skills in farming and animal raising.
Students will learn different real - life skills in different grades. Take cooking as an example. They need to learn home cooking, from preparing vegetables to finally cooking a meal alone. Students in the first and second grades will learn to wash and prepare vegetables. In the third and fourth grades, students will learn to make cold dishes heat. The fifth and sixth graders will learn to cook two to three common dishes. Students in Grade 7-9 will learn to make three to four dishes for lunch or dinner.
An education expert says, we should pay more attention to each student's overall(全面的)growth and progress, instead of only the exam results. ""
"This reminds me of my life skills class in primary school. I-learned to make dumplings. It's a super - good memory of my childhood, "someone says online. "These will be lifelong skills for kids. They will help them become all - round people, not just students who are able to take exams, "says another Internet user.
Do you love eating spicy (辛辣的)foods? They seem to come from countries with a tropical climate (热带气候). Two scientists, Jennifer Billing and Dr Paul Sherman, wondered why? They thought that healthy eating habits probably helped people survive(生存). But how could eating "hot foods in tropical climates make dinners healthier?
Hundreds of years ago people didn't know how some spices preserved(保存) foods. Since then, scientists have discovered that spice plants have some important chemicals. These chemicals can kill bacteria (细菌) which spoil (变质) food." Most common spices can kill 75 to 100 percent of the bacteria in food, " explains one of the scientists. The bacteria grow more easily and spoil food more quickly at higher temperatures. For this reason, it is more difficult to keep food from spoiling in hot climates. Do you like your spicy foods? Your answer probably tells something about the country you come from if you like spicy foods. It is possible that hundreds of years ago, when there were no fridges, people in your country started using spices to keep the food from spoiling. The traditional spicy dishes helped those people to live longer, healthier lives. Today, in a time of fridges, the spices just make the food taste good.
