Last Friday, I agreed to meet some friends at 6:00 p.m. in a coffee shop. The weather was sunny, so I decided to walk there. I arrived ten minutes early. I ordered a cup of coffee and sat watching people. There were some boys playing football on the street, and a small boy was running after the ball as it rolled(滚) across the road.
Suddenly, there came a car. It was going very fast. When the driver saw the boy in his way, he braked(刹车) hard. But it was too late. The small boy was lying on the street without moving. To everyone's surprise, the car didn't stop. It drove away quickly.
People ran to the boy. There was a cut on the boy's head and he lost a lot of blood. The coffee shop owner telephoned the police. Soon an ambulance(救护车) arrived and took the boy to the hospital.
At 6:30 p.m., the police arrived and started questioning people. About half an hour later, they asked me to go to the police station because I saw everything. I gave them all the information I knew because I really wanted them to catch the driver. I didn't leave the police station until 8:00 p.m. After that I went home because I didn't feel like talking to anyone.
The next day, the boy's parents called me to say thanks. They also told me their boy was fine and the driver was in the police station now.

Known as the "Olympics of Skills", the WorldSkills Competition is held every two years by WorldSkills International. They planned to have it in Shanghai last year. Nowadays, people are paying more and more attention to vocational education. It is as important as academic(学术的) learning.
In July 2022, a biking team named "Bike Angel" traveled across Fujian. The riders from Taiwan and volunteers from Beijing took part in the activity.
Back in 2011, Yang visited an orphanage(孤儿院) in Taiwan. He learned that many children there loved to go bike riding. But they didn't even have enough money to buy their own bikes. Yang then decided to make their dreams come true.
They rode from Beijing to Xiamen. During this 40-day trip, they traveled about 3,200 kilometers. These teenagers' dreams finally came true. They enjoyed the beautiful scenery(风景) in different cities. In Beijing, for example, they visited the Great Wall and the National Stadium. Yang's dream also came true. " It broadened their horizons(开阔了他们的眼界)," Yang said.
In the past ten years, more than 900 children and teenagers from Taiwan have taken part in biking trips. They started working hard to live a better life.
Now Yang is planning more biking trips for teenagers. He also hopes that in the future these children can enjoy the happiness that riding can bring. "Our biking trips are not just for traveling. They are to help teenagers see the outside world and become a better person," said Yang.
A. He really wants to bring new experiences to them. B. Thanks to these trips, many young people found hope. C. In the following summer, Yang organized a biking team of 75 people. D. Yang Minzhong from Taiwan set up the biking team in 2012. E. I took these children across the mountains and seas to see the outside world. |
Du Fu (712-770), one of the greatest poets in China, is familiar to most of us. However, Du has remained largely unknown in the Western world.
The BBC's one-hour documentary Du Fu: China's Greatest Poet introduces the great poet to Western people. As the first English-language documentary about Du, it compares him to Dante and Shakespeare, two of the greatest masters of literature of the West.
In the film, British historian, Michael Wood explores the poet's life. He visits a number of places, such as the poet's birthplace Gongyi, Henan Province and the Du Fu Thatched Cottage(杜甫草堂) in Chengdu, Sichuan, where Du used to live. Along the way, he meets and talks to people who help to tell the stories of the poet.
The documentary explains why Du's works have been popular for centuries. "Chinese people really value the recording of history and Du is better than anyone at reflecting(反映) history in his poetry. That's because historical events are mirrored in his own life and spiritual(精神的) journey," said Zeng Xiangbo, a professor at Renmin University of China.
Du was a civil servant(文职人员) in the country. But as the An Lushan Rebellion of 755 floored the empire, he escaped, took his family on the road as refugees(难民), and endured starvation(饥俄) and poverty(贫穷). Through ups and downs, the poet never stopped writing, pouring out his concern for his country and people, as well as celebrating the simple joys of life. Known as China's "saint of poetry", he wrote about 1,500 poems that are still with us today.
Do you know that a little boy did an amazing thing to cheer up people?
Two terrible things happened to six-year-old Jaden Hayes. First his dad 1 when he was four. Then last month when his mom was sleeping, she lost her life, too.
"I tried hard to 2 her up, but I couldn't," said Jaden.
Of course, Jaden felt very sad.
3 he didn't always remain sad. A few weeks ago he told his aunt, Barbara Di Cola, that he didn't want to see everyone sad all the time. He made a 4 to change it.
"And that was the start of it," said Barbara. So a special trip began.
Jaden asked his aunt Barbara to buy a few little toys and bring 5 to the city center Savannah, Georgia near where he lives, so he could give them away.
"I'm trying to make people smile," said Jaden.
Jaden wishes to help people who aren't smiling and let them have a pleasant day. He has gone out four times to give away 6 to people and he is always successful. It is really hard for people to 7 the six-year-old who would give away a toy for only a smile.
Sometimes a smile is not only a 8. It seems to have some magic power that comforts(安慰) people, especially when they have just had a 9 time.
"I'm going to reach 33,000 people," said Jaden. When he was asked if he thought he could 10 this task, he answered, "I think I can."
Nowadays more and more people care health. But how can we keep healthy? In my opinion, it is important (follow) some rules.
First, we should take some exercise every day. A study shows that getting plenty of exercise (make) the heart beat faster and the lungs(肺) work harder. This helps lower blood pressure. That's more and more people take an active part in different kinds of sports and exercise.
Second, we'd better eat more fruit and vegetables. But you (should) eat too much meat such as beef. The food people eat is connected with their health. Meat has more fat than fish. Fat can fill in the arteries(动脉), and then (easy) cause a heart problem.
At last, giving up bad habits like smoking(吸烟) and drinking too much alcohol(酒) is also important way to keep healthy. Smoking and drinking alcohol are bad for (people) health, and everyone should stop them. (lucky), not many people follow this piece of advice.
If you can follow these rules, you'll live a (healthy) and happier life.
Lots of people are calling for September 11 to become a national day of volunteering in America. Helping others in need is an important part of the American way of life. 许多学校要求学生每周花几个小时帮助别人。 So what can you volunteer to do?
Help kids learn and grow
Become a Big Brother or Big Sister for them. You can also volunteer in an after-school sports program. These are great ways to know kids who have special needs.
Do something over the holidays
Buy Thanksgiving dinner for the poor people, volunteer at your local(当地的) food bank, or give away toys to kids.
Work at a local animal center
Most centers often need many volunteers to look after the cats and dogs. Loving animals makes it possible for you to become a volunteer there.
Protect the environment
Join a group and help protect the environment. There are many things you can do such as cleaning the river, planting trees and using less paper.
If you have more than one thing you love, find a way to put them together. For example, if you love kids and are good at art, visit your local children's hospital and play some art games with them. You can also tell them stories about famous artists and how things used to be, volunteering for something. 你会发现它会对你的生活产生很大的影响。
要求:
1)语句通顺连贯,包含提示内容,可适当发挥;
2)词数80词左右。
