Barditch High School decided to have an All-School Reunion. Over 450 people came to the event. Here were tours of the old school building and a picnic at Confederate Park. Several former teachers were on hand to tell stories about the old days. Ms. Mabel Yates the English teacher for fifty years, was wheeled to the park.
Some eyes rolled and there were a few low groans(嘟囔声)when Ms. Yates was about to speak. Many started looking at their watches and coming up with excuses to be anywhere instead of preparing to listen to a lecture from an old woman who had few kind words for her students and made them work harder than all the other teachers combined.
Then Ms. Yates started to speak: "I can't tell you how pleased I an to be here. I haven't seen many of you since your graduation. But I have followed your careers(事业)and enjoyed your victories as well as crying for your tragedies(不幸). I have a large collection of newspaper photographs of my students. Although I haven't appeared in person. I have attended your college graduations, weddings and even the birth of your children, in my imagination.
Ms. Yates paused and started crying a bit. Then she continued:"It was my belief that if I pushed you as hard as I could, some of you would succeed to please me and others would succeed to annoy me. Regardless of our motives(动机), I can see that you have all been successful in your chosen path. ""There is no greater comfort for an educator than to see the end result of his or her years of work. You have all been a great source of pleasure and pride for me and I want you to know I love you all from the bottom of my heart. "
There was a silence over the crowd for a few seconds and then someone started clapping. The clapping turned into cheering, then into a deafening roar(呼喊). Lawyers, truck drivers, bankers and models were rubbing their eyes or crying openly with no shame all because of the words from a long forgotten English teacher from their hometown.
Mark Twain looked down upon those people who think it is possible for someone to learn how to write a novel. "A man who is not born with the novel-writing gift has troublesome time of it when he tries to build a novel", he said.
But now new technology is making a difference to help an author write a novel. Michael Green, a US data scientist-turned-novelist, felt that technology could help him.
He said that the process had become difficult to manage: "In the midst of editing, I got to the point where I started feeling like I had a lot of plots and characters" he said "I had all these documents on the deeper aspects of the world I was creating. I was worried about not being able to keep track of it all. That is when I switched into my more data science-minded approach to solving a complex problem with a lot of different places. "
Green went on to create Lynit a digital platform to help authors plan and weave together the many elements that form a story, such as the themes, characters and major events.
"As the author gets a new idea that they want to bring into the story they are able to input it into a natural framework, " he said "piece by piece they are adding to the story. As new ideas come in, they change, maybe by creating new nodes (节点) new relationships. "
Once the book has been published, technology is also playing an ever-increasing role in publicity and connecting with readers. Websites and APPs from specialist firms allow authors to participate in live-question-and-answer sessions with their audience. Michael Green believes technology will become even more important as a new generation of tech savvy (精通技术的) writers becomes more well known.
"What I'm finding with the Generation Z and even younger writers is that they are looking for technology to give them guidance, " he said, "They see it as a tool to learn and grow with rather than extra work. "
When people think of threats facing the ocean, we often think of climate change, plastics, and overfishing. But research shows noise pollution is another essential thing we need to be monitoring. Scientists say the changes in the sounds of our oceans, seas, and other waterways affect many marine animals—from very small shrimps to huge whales.
Francis Juanes, an ecologist, explained, "For fish, sound is probably a better way to sense their environment than light. " Sounds help fish and other marine animals survive. They use sounds to communicate with each other. Sounds also help some ocean animals find food and avoid their hunters. Many ocean animals use sounds to find good places to mate (交配).
However, increased noise from humans is making it harder for these animals to hear each other. The noise is coming from shipping traffic, motorized fishing ships, underwater oil and gas exploration, offshore construction, and other noisy human activity. "For many marine species, their attempts to communicate are being masked by sounds that humans have introduced, " said Carlos Duarte, who co-wrote the paper with Juanes.
Experts at NOAA (the U. S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) explain the term masking on its website. Masking happens when one or more noises in the water block sound important to a marine animal's existence. NOAA experts state that masking is most noticeable when "a noise is at the same frequency and loudness as biologically important sounds, such as mating calls. "
The stress from human noise might also affect the immune system—an animal's natural defense system—as well as reproductive (生殖的)health or behavior. "Imagine having to raise your kids in a place that's noisy all the time, " said Joe Roman. He is a marine ecologist at the University of Vermont and was not involved in the research. Roman added that it should come as no surprise that many marine animals are showing higher levels of stress due to noise.
Friendships can have a major effect on your health and happiness, but it's not always easy to develop or keep friendships. You should understand the importance of social connection in your life and what you can do to develop lasting friendships.
What are the advantages of friendships?
Friends can help you celebrate good times and provide support during bad times. Friends give you a chance to offer needed companionship(陪伴) too. Friends increase your happiness and reduce your stress. Friends encourage you to go through the hard times and improve your self-confidence.
Friends play an important role in guiding you to develop good habits and keep healthy. Adults have a risk of many health problems, including depression(抑郁)and high blood pressure. In fact, studies have found that older adults who have meaningful relationships and social supports are likely to live longer than their peers with fewer connections.
Why is it sometimes hard to make friends or keep friendships?
Many adults find it hard to develop new friendships or keep up existing friendships. Friendships may take a back seat to other more important ones, such as working or caring for children or aging parents. Or maybe you've moved to a new community and haven't yet found a way to meet people.
Developing and keeping good friendships take efforts. To meet new people who might become your friends, you have to go to places where others are gathered. Don't limit yourself to one strategy for meeting people.
A. Never giving up also matters.
B. Good friends are good for your health.
C. Friends prevent you from sadness as well as loneliness.
D. The broader your efforts, the greater your possibilities of success.
E. You and your friends may have grown apart due to changes in your lives or interests.
F. We benefit from our friends because we get to choose the ones who make us feel happiest.
G. However, friendship can provide enjoyment and comfort which makes the effort worthwhile.
I grew up poor-living with my wonderful mother. We had little money, but plenty of love and attention. I was 1 and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, he could still 2 a dream.
My dream was 3 . By the time I was sixteen, I started playing baseball. I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything that moved on the football field. I was also 4 . My high school coach was John, who not only believed in me, but also taught me how to believe in myself. He 5 me the difference between having a dream and remaining true to that dream. One particular 6 with Coach John changed my life forever.
A friend suggested me for a summer job. This meant a chance for money in my pocket- money for a new bike, new clothes and the 7 of savings for a house for my mother. Then I realized I would have to 8 up summer baseball to handle the work schedule, and that meant I would have to tell John I wouldn't be playing.
When I told John, he was 9 as I expected him to be. "You have your whole life to work, " He said. "Your 10 days are limited. You can't afford to waste them. " I stood before him with my head 11 , trying to think of the 12 that would explain to him why my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his 13 in me.
"How much will you make at this job, son?" He asked. "3.5 dollars an hour, " I replied. "Well, " he asked, "is $3.5 an hour the price of a dream?"
That simple question made 14 for me the difference between 15 something at once and having a goal. I decided myself to play sports that summer and within the year I was hired by the Pittsburgh Pirates to play baseball, and was offered a $20, 000 contract. In 1999, I bought my mother the house of my dream!
