To raise money for restaurant workers who had to stay at home during COVID, two brothers, Aiden and Louis Ardine, decided to walk 3,200 miles across America to raise money.
Having just arrived on the sands of the Pacific Ocean, Aiden and Louis Ardine have now completed their five-month walk which started on the Asbury Park boardwalk in New Jersey. They hoped to raise $30,000 for some charities (慈善组织) that were helping restaurant workers waiting for lockdown (隔离) to end, but ended up making $70,000 — which they gave way to the COCO Fund and the Restaurant Workers' Community Foundation.
"This would not have been possible without the help of a huge community of people, whether people were donating or helping us guide our way across the United States." said Aiden Ardine. "This was surely an adventure full of hope, and it proved people are born good and want to help their neighbors."
Just like cross-country trips in this nation, their journey was characterized by amazing views, long roads, and helpful strangers: like a man who passed them in the extreme heat of summertime Iowa, before doubling back and giving them a cold Gatorade; or a Nevada campground manager who left them stay for free.
In Utah they had what the naturalist John Muir would have described as an "interview" with a black bear, when rounding a corner in the path, they found themselves within a few feet of it.
When they reached San Francisco, their supporters were waiting for them on the beach. Afterwards they flew home along with their mom who had been there to meet them. After their adventurous stay away from home, we can only imagine she was really feeling proud of her sons.
When you're eating dinner with your family, do your parents ever remind you to finish all the food on your plate? If so, you should know it's not just because they want you to be healthy.
They also want to stop food waste. Every year, 1. 3 billion tons of food was wasted around the world, according to the UN. That was about one-third of all food produced each year. We made a survey in 34 countries to see how much food was wasted in different countries. For example, the UAE (阿联酋) wasted the most food, with each person wasting about 1,000 kilos every year on average. However, some countries have worked hard to use their food resources wisely. France wasted the least amount of food, according to the survey. France was the first country to pass laws that banned food waste. It was not allowed to throwaway fresh food. Another law forced French restaurants to provide bags for people's leftovers (剩饭菜).
China was the 23rd for food waste in the survey. China's food waste was around 18millon tons every year, enough to feed up to 50 million people for one year. Facing this situation,China has been working hard to reduce food waste. In early 2013, a movement to prevent food waste called "empty plate" began. It has become popular among both government officials and general public.
By now, most people know they should be eating more vegetables. But are there ways to get more from the vegetables you already eat? A research shows that when it comes to vegetables, it's not only how much we eat, but also how we prepare them, that decides the vitamins and other nutrients that enter our body.
Many studies show that people who eat lots of vegetables have less heart disease, and eye problems and even cancer. But raw vegetables are not always best. The researchers found that 198 Germans who eat raw food were short of lycopene, the matter found in tomatoes and other red vegetables. "There is an idea that raw foods are always going to be better," says Steven K. Clinton, a professor at Ohio State University. "For fruits and vegetables, sometimes a little bit of cooking can be helpful."
A number of factors decide how the vegetables do good to people's health before they reach the table, including where and how they were grown and stored before being bought. No single cooking way is best. Some nutrients are easily lost in cooking if they are cooked in different ways.
Vitamins C and B are often lost. In January, another report said that boiling was better for carrots than frying or serving them raw. Frying was the worst way to cook.
What cooked with the vegetables can also be important? When the vegetables were cooked with fat, the diners can get more nutrients. Fat can also make the taste of vegetables better, meaning that people will eat more of them. Putting on some other things that make it taste better—a little salt—can make the food taste better.
Failure is a word that no one wants to hear. It is human being's biggest fear, yet it is faced by every human being. Sometimes, people's fear of it is their biggest barrier to success. Here are some tips which can help you get on the positive side of life.
Say no to giving up. Before starting anything that you think will give you success, promise yourself that you will never give up. This promise helps make your mind ready for both failure and success. But what if you didn't do that in the start? Learn from your mistakes. This is the opportunity that you should not let go of. Suppose you are on a football ground. But at the tenth attempt, you succeed after 9 'in a row failures or mistakes'. The tenth attempt proves that you have somehow learnt from your mistakes.
Never think that you've got only one plan. The worst thing you can do after failing in some project is thinking that it was the only plan you could ever think of. If a plan A fails, turn to Plan B or Plan C. If you are into achieving something, no one or nothing in this world can stop you.
This is the most important thing that you need to live a happy life. Always think positive. Never let yourself down. Positivity is all we need to grow and establish ourselves in this world.
A. Keep a positive attitude.
B. There is always another plan.
C. Change the failure into victory.
D. In fact, most people strongly deny it.
E. Then always remember that it is never too late.
F. You strike the ball for 9 times in a row and fail
G. Therefore, you need to learn how to deal with failure.
When I was eight years old, Mother told me to put my coat on because we were going to go someplace 1 . Usually, that meant we were going to see someone important or2 I would at least get a new toy. I asked which one it would be that day, and she told me that I would be getting something3 than a toy. She said I would get "access to a world of toys."
But we did not 4 at any toy store. Nor did we finally see anyone we knew. 5, Mother 6 her car at Marcy Public Library. Mother led me directly to the reception desk. "I'd like to get my daughter a library card," she told the man7 the desk. He asked her to fill out a form and smiled at me. "What kind of books do you like?" he asked. I was too shy to8 then. I simply smiled back and shrugged my shoulders. "Well, you'll figure it out 9," He said.
I do not remember what I10that first day, but I know that in the years that 11 I read everything I could find12 at that old library. I read through all the Nancy Drew books before advancing to Judy Blume, then the13: Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Shakespeare. Then I read books on history, books of poetry, and books about art. The library opened up a world that I 14knew existed.
So Mother was15. Getting a library card was like getting access to a world of toys.
Garbage Classification
With the development of science and technology, our life is becoming much better and more convenient. However, more garbage and pollution (produce) at the same time, which (lay) a heavy burden on our environment. is known to all, environment plays a vital role in our daily life. In response to the severe situation, we should take effective (measure) to protect the planet where we coexist (共存). It is suggested that we should sort waste (improve) the situation.
Garbage classification, which is a good way to protect our environment, can't be too emphasized. It can help separate recyclable (可回收的) waste, which can be(full) used to help save the resources a large extent. Not only can we make our environment clean and beautiful, but also recyclable waste can be made good use of to benefit us in return.
As garbage classification is significant, we should take active part in putting it into practice. It's a must for (we) to learn to sort waste. It is the little things we do today that have a profound influence on the planet. Only if all of us make joint efforts can we make a big
(different) and have a good environment.

A rock as big as a house. That's how the guide book described Giant Rock. I was finally going to see it, on snowshoes, with my three older cousins and my dad. I'd been snowshoeing before, and I liked the adventure of hiking through deep snow alongside wild-animal tracks.
At the parking area, after putting on our snowshoes, we studied the map. Dad said, "We start here, on the red trail (路线). Then we turn left onto the purple trail. That's where Giant Rock is. Remember to stick together, guys. "
The trail ran uphill alongside a stone wall. It was easy to follow because red markers were nailed to the trees and the snow had been packed down by other hikers. At the top of the hill, we turned onto the purple trail. My cousins and dad were faster than I was, but I managed to keep up.
The late afternoon sun felt warm, although it was already sinking lower. Finally, we reached a hill and saw the big rock sitting alone. My cousins and I high-fived each other and jogged down the slope until we stood at the base, breathless.
Noticing the sun had sunk even lower, dad said after a few minutes, "let's head back". I was a little behind the group when I noticed a set of animals tracks I didn't recognize. They were hard to see among the snowshoe prints, so I followed them off the trail for a closer look. There were no claw (爪) marks, which meant they didn't belong to a dog or a fox. I was thinking about it when I suddenly realized how quiet it had gotten. "Hey!" I shouted. "Where is everyone?" Nothing I was totally alone.
They couldn't have gone far, I thought, stepping back onto the trail. "I'll catch up to them if I hurry." I came to a crossroad where I could turn left or go straight, but both trails had purple markers. It was difficult to choose. Soon it was too dark to tell what colour the markers were. And I couldn't just follow my own footsteps because there were so many tracks from other hikers.
