To better adjust to the life of studying abroad in the UK, we should learn about the forms of teaching at UK universities in advance.
Lecture
Many students will attend classes at the same time. Professors will explain professional knowledge and recent academic developments. The duration of a class is 1 to 3 hours.
Seminars
Seminars (研讨会) are generally held after the lecture, once a week or every other week, ranging from 30 minutes to 1 hour. A seminar includes communication between students and supervisors (导师) . The purpose is to discuss and analyze real cases based on the theories learned in lectures.
Workshop
If you are studying a practical major (专业), such as engineering and artistic design, you will have workshops. The content of the workshop is usually to learn an auxiliary (辅助的)software, carry out a design in the school studio or do an experiment in the laboratory.
Field trips
Field trips are mainly aimed at students studying subjects like architecture and urban planning. For example, in the art appreciation major, professors usually take students to visit art galleries to experience the wonderful artworks up close, which is a much more vivid experience than just sitting in class.
Arun Kumar Bajaj has a very unusual skill — he can paint with a sewing machine (缝纫机). Technically, it's embroidering, not painting, but his artworks are so detailed that they can pass as paintings to the untrained eyes. And the fact that he does it all with a sewing machine just makes that much more impressive.
Arun was really good at drawing and painting while growing up and dreamed of becoming a famous painter, but his father died suddenly 15 years ago, which destroyed his plans and forced him to give up school in order to run the family business. His father was a tailor and he became one too, but he didn't let the artist in him die. He started "painting" with a needle and thread, but instead of using his hands, he decided on a rather unusual tool —the sewing machine. It took him a while to master this unique art form, but today he is recognized as the world's only sewing machine artist. His works become very popular both in India and abroad. It's easy to see why, just by looking at them, but what really makes his embroideries special is the tool he uses.
"You need to be very careful because once you've stitched the cloth, there's no way you can repair it. " Arun said. "It's all done in a single layer to give the painting a neat look. "
Some of Arun's most impressive works include a 4×2 feet painting of the court of Ranjit Singh, which took the artist over a year to finish. Arun runs a tailoring business in the Adalat Bazar of Patiala, but he devotes a lot of his time to his artistic dream as well.
China indeed is a land full of amazement! As fate would have it, my decision to pursue my studies in this country has not only changed the opinion I had about China but also helped shape my entire pattern of thought. I previously envisioned a country where the buildings were of typical Chinese architecture and with bicycles all over the streets. Rather than anxiety, I actually had lots of excitement due to the mystical illusion I had about the country that is home to a very rich culture, and has a long historical background. Despite the perceived language barrier and cultural differences, I was looking forward to having a lifetime experience in China, which is home to the largest population in the world and is making headlines as a country on the rise in the global sphere.
My initial arrival gave me a firsthand experience of what it feels like to be a foreigner in a country whose language I could not understand. My first real encounter was with a university employee who had been sent to meet me at the airport. The only thing that was familiar to me as I walked out of the airport was my name scribbled on the placard he stretched out above his head. Though relieved that there was someone to meet me, fears were finally confirmed:he could not speak a word in English! The words he spoke sounded like nothing I had ever heard before and all I could do was to respond in English, which he could not understand. A silent ride is all that followed with our departure from the airport into the heart of Changchun. That marked the beginning of my new journey into life's experience and self development.
At the end of 2018, the Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS北斗卫星导航系统) started to provide global services. "This marked Beidou's entering a 'global era' from its 'regional era', " BDS Spokesman Ran Chengqi said at a news conference.
Now with two more Beidou satellites launched on Dec. 16th, 2019, BDS has 53 satellites in orbit-more than US government's Global Positioning System(GPS), which has 31 active satellites. That launch means the core of Beidou's third-generation network is now in place. It is expected to greatly improve the system's ability to serve users worldwide.
A signal receiver on Earth-your smart phone, for example, measures its distance from at least three satellites by recording the amount of time it takes to receive their signals. Then it can calculate its location. With so many satellites, BDS can provide a more accurate calculation. While GPS calculates locations to within a few meters, BDS reduces the error to centimeters. This high-precision service is useful for land surveying, mapping, agriculture and automated driving.
China is willing to share BDS with the world. According to Ran, BDS products have been exported to more than 120 countries and regions. "The Beidou system will always stick to the development idea of 'China's Beidou, the world's Beidou and the first-class Beidou', serving the world and benefiting mankind, " Ran told reporters after the latest launch. He added that future plans call for a smarter and more accessible system with Beidou as its core, to come online by 2035.
Living in a different country can be a culture shock for many people, so make sure you know about the food, customs and culture of the place you are planning on moving to. Here is some of my experience of moving from Spain to the UK.
The first thing that I did when I got out of the airport was to cross the road, but I looked the wrong way!In the UK the cars drive on the lefthand side of the road whereas in Spain they drive on the right. I almost got run over because I was still thinking I was in Spain. You have to be very careful when you move to another place.
Drink water
In the UK the filtering(过滤)of the water means that you can drink straight from the tap. On my first night back I forgot that I could drink water from the taps and spent the night wishing I had a bottle of water. When I woke up, I realized how silly I had been.
Time is different
If we are going for a proper night out at the weekend in Spain we might not meet until 10 or 11 pm at night or even later sometimes. This means we might not actually get home until 5 or 6 o'clock the following morning. !
Greet everyone with a kiss
In the UK most men use a handshake to greet other men. Women may be greeted with a handshake, a hug or a kiss on the cheek, depending on the situation. In Spain, among my friends, everyone is greeted with a kiss on both cheeks and maybe a quick hug.
A. Be careful on the road B. Drive on the left side of the road C. In the UK that is already past the bedtime D. Different places have different cultures and rules E. In Spain, most people buy large bottles of water to drink F. In Spain, the days are warmer, the sun shines brightly and everyone is relaxed G. If they are good friends, they may give each other a quick hug but that is about it |
I was a single parent of four small children, working at a low-paid job. But I didn't want my children to know we were poor, so when Christmas was drawing near, I decided to give them some money to buy some1 .
They planned weeks ahead of time, asking2 what they wanted for Christmas. Luckily, I had saved$120 for3 to share by all five of us. The big4 arrived. I gave each kid a twenty-dollar bill and5 them to look for gifts of about four dollars each. Then everyone scattered (散开). We had two hours to shop, then we would6 back at the "Santa's Workshop".
Driving home, everyone was in high Christmas spirits, 7 my younger daughter, Ginger, who was unusually8 . She had only one small, flat bag with a few candies, fifty-cent candies!I was so angry, but I didn't say anything9 we got home. I called her into my bedroom and closed the door, 10 to be angry again. This is what she told me.
"I was looking11 thinking of what to buy, and I12 to read the little cards on the 'Giving Trees'. One was for a little girl, four years old, and all she13 for Christmas was a doll (玩具娃娃). So I took the card off the tree and14 the doll for her. We have so much and she doesn't have anything. "
I never felt so15 as I did that day.
Before the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, visually-impaired (视力受损的)Chinese runner Liu Cuiqing put a lot of stress on (she) to do well. Finally, she made it. She won two gold medals with the help of her sighted guide Xu Donglin and brought honor and glory for China.
In 2010, she joined the national athletics team was made up of disabled people. She has had to experience countless challenges. "As a blind person, I learn things (slowly) than other people do, " she said. Sports competitions for disabled (athlete) require blind runners to be assisted by a guide. Liu met Xu in 2013 and since then, the two (train) hard together, linked by a thin rope. "To other people, this may just be ordinary rope, but to us, it is the eye, the direction and trust. We depend the rope to feel the turns and the distance between us. Only when she trusts me (complete) is she able to run boldly(大胆地), " Xu told CCTV.
At the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games, after (cross) the finish line, Xu fell heavily because of a pain in his right knee. "In fact, when I was running, my leg was already so (pain) that I could not feel anything. I only had one thought, which was to accompany her (Liu) to the end, " he told CCTV after the race.
An Honest Mistake
Alice double-checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 percent today, she'd win her class's First-Quarter Spelling Challenge and a brand-new dictionary that came with videos and other cool stuff. Plus, Lisa had promised to do a handstand if anyone got a perfect score.
Three more words to go. n-i-c-e-l-y. q-u-i-c-k-l-y. h-o-n-s-t-y. Wait! She'd spelled "honesty", not "honestly"!She hurriedly erased the t-y and wrote l-y before handing in her paper.
"I'll correct and grade these test papers at the break", said Lisa. Alice hurried into the classroom. She sat restlessly in her seat with her fingers crossed. Then Lisa walked to the front of the room and cleared her throat.
"Congratulations, Alice! You did it!" she announced. The whole class burst into applause!Lisa presented Alice with her prize. Alice grinned(咧嘴笑) as she read the label on the box:To Alice Carter, for her perfect first -quarter score in spelling.
"Is everything OK?" Mom asked as Alice burst through the front door after school. "Everything is perfect!" Alice shouted, showing Mom her spelling test paper and prize. Mom hugged her. "Put the test on the fridge so Dad can see it when he get home. And Casper, too. " Alice scooped (抱起) up her cat. "Casper, can you spell nicely, quickly and honestly?" Alice's heart missed a beat suddenly. "Honestly?" H-O-N-E-S-L-Y!
"Alice, what's the matter?" said Mom. "I don't feel so good, " Alice said, putting Casper down and stuffing the test paper into her backpack. "Probably too much excitement. " Mom rubbed her back. "How about some tea?" Alice swallowed, "How did you know? A "t" is exactly what I needed.
