Cimabue, the greatest painter of a Middle Ages in Italy, was surprised one day after his lunch break to discover that a fly had seated itself under the nose of a character that he had been working on. He swatted (重拍) at the fly, but it did not move. He reached out to touch the insect, only to find it was only wet paint. Turning around, he saw that his apprentice (学徒), Giotto, was laughing. Giotto had painted the fly when Cimabue was away, and it looked so real that Cimabue had been completely fooled.
Giotto di Bondone was born into a poor family in a village. Legend has it that one day, when Cimabue was wandering around the countryside, he spotted a young shepherd boy drawing pictures of his sheep, which were so vivid that Cimabue immediately asked him to come to Florence and learn how to paint. That was how Giotto's story began in Florence, where the young student flourished under Cimabue s instruction and soon surpassed his master in skill.
At that time, people in paintings didn't look real, and the symbolism of art was difficult for viewers to connect with it. Innovation (创新) was not stressed, so art had remained the same for hundreds of years.
However, Giotto thought art should be something more connected with people in a more realistic way. His masterpieces included the forty major frescoes (壁画) for the Arena Chapel. Adopting many techniques that were uncommon then, he painted people the way he saw them, instead of the overly tall and boxy people that other artists painted. He created three-dimensional space by using perspective, something that had not been done since Roman times.
In addition to painting, Giotto wrote poetry and drew architectural plans. When Giotto was in his sixties, he painted the Ognissanti Madomma, another famous work of art. He continued working until the age of seventy. The ideas Giotto brought to painting throughout his life revolutionized the art world and made him one of the greatest painters ever.
A sleepover (过夜) program, which is designed to make kids believe that their favorite toys enjoy reading, can help encourage children to pick up more books, a new study suggests.
Toys sleepover programs are designed to get children interested in books. Children take their toys to a library for the night. At this point, workers and volunteers take photos of the toys which explore the library and read books. The next day, the children collect their toys and the photos of what the toys did during the night. They are given the books their toys chose to read.
It was found that before the sleepover the children did not spend time looking at the books in their play area at preschool. Immediately after the sleepover, the number of children who read to the toys was higher than the number who did not, but after three days the effect decreased gradually.
The researchers also tested a method for sustaining the effect. They reminded the children of the sleepover a month later, by hiding the toys and showing them the photos again the next day. This simple method brought an increase in the number of children reading to their toys.
The study proves for the first time that children who take part in sleepover programs read picture books to their toys more. "We wanted to know if there really was an effect, and if so, how long it lasts. Surprisingly, not only did the children show interest in the books, but they also began to read to their toys. This means that a new behavior pattern appeared that the children hadn't had before. We did not expect anything like this," said one of the researchers.
Reading is important for the development of children's language skills and imagination. When parents read to their children, it is a passive way of reading for the child. However, when children read to their toys, it is a more active, self-directed way of reading, helping them develop into more active readers, researchers said.
What do you do when nobody is around to take your picture? You take a selfie(自拍照). But what about selfies in space? Last year, NASA astronaut(宇航员)Buzz Aldrin who famously became the second man to walk on the moon in July 1969, said that he took the first selfie in space during the Gemini Ⅻ mission in 1966.
"For me, it needs to be digital to be a selfie," argues Jennifer Levasseur, who is in charge of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. According to Levasseur, the idea of a selfie is directly linked to Internet culture and the human wish to interact(互动)on social platforms. "The thing that makes a selfie is sharing it," she says.
Still, astronauts have been carrying cameras aboard space vehicles since the 1960s, and they've taken plenty of pictures of themselves along the way. Astronauts had to pull the film magazines(胶卷暗盒)out and leave their cameras behind when they returned to Earth, because early space missions had a weight limit on the return trip.
A big change in space camera technology came after the sad loss of the space shuttle Columbus, which broke apart on its return to Earth in 2003. "Fearing that they would never be able to bring the film back from space and lose all that hard work quickened the pace for digital," Levasseur says.
Today, astronauts can have access to the Internet and social platforms in space and post true space selfies taken by digital cameras. Taking selfies and sharing them on social media is a way that astronauts in space can participate in the same activities people on Earth do every day. The first astronaut selfie that went viral(网红的)on the Internet was one by Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide in 2012.
After hearing "I wish I'd known this when I was in Senior 1!" countless times by the end of the school year, my senior 3 class decided to leave behind some real advice for newcomers in senior high. .
Get a planner
If I didn't have a planner, . I had a hard copy planner, and writing down my homework and activities helped me to stay organised. I could see everything I needed to do. I think it also makes a good impression when you're talking to people and you pull out a planner. — Samantha
Be realistic about your future decisions. If you want to head to a top college, you need to start thinking and working for that immediately. And while that includes getting good grades, it's not just about grades. You also have to take leadership positions because at last, that's what makes you stand out. — Alondra
Work hard
When I was in junior high, a friend from senior high school told me I must concentrate on study and work hard from the minute I entered senior high. .So many of my friends fell behind the first year because it was so different from junior high school. But I was ready because I got that advice, and I worked hard from day one. So listen to me, and you'll be all set. — Edi
Be present
My advice for newcomers is to be present and live in the moment. Before you know it, high school's over, and you can't go back. There are no do-overs. . — Riad
A. Keep it real
B. I listened to his advice
C. Get out of your comfort zone
D. Here is some of the great advice they shared
E. I would have never made it through high school
F. Live during your high school years so you have no regrets
G. Join clubs in which you have shared values with other students
At school, art class is fun. We 1with different techniques and generally get creative. However, a field trip to an art gallery is often 2. Last year my art teacher organized a trip to an art exhibition. The gallery was full of older people, who obviously didn't want to be with 3students. We all got 4 and couldn't stop chatting. Our teacher was getting 5 and kept telling us to be quiet.
The next day we complained to our teacher about the 6 of activities for teens at art galleries. She 7 that a visit should be both educational and fun. That's when I decided to go online and look for art galleries that have special8 for teens. Eventually, I 9to find a huge range of activities and proposed some to my teacher.
I also used the 10 to learn about artists. Recently, I found a contemporary artist called Martin Bailey. I've 11 seen artists who combine different techniques, but Bailey is totally different. He does unique illustrations with 12 household objects such as umbrellas, headphones and even cookies. His art is simple, but it makes you see things 13. For example, he notices that a flower is similar to a mop(拖把) and puts this 14into life by drawing a little man with a real flower mop. It's really 15 ! I hope I'll be able to go to an exhibition of his work in the future.
