Once there was a poor village. People there often locked their doors and windows tight and kept the food they had to themselves.
A stranger came one day. He was really tired and hungry. He stopped at the first1to ask for some food. "There is hardly any food here!" the woman inside the house said and closed the door. But the traveler was not ready to 2. He picked up a large, round 3 and knocked once more. The lady opened the door only half way. "Since you are poor like me, perhaps you would like to have some of my 4 stone soup." said the traveler. Though the woman felt it was impossible, she was hungry too, so she invited him in. She lit the fire to boil the water, and opened her windows to let out some heat. The traveler 5 the stone inside the water until it boiled. He tasted a little, "It's almost done, but if you had just a little salt and butter, it would taste much better!" The lady did so.
Just then the lady's husband returned with carrots and potatoes. "Impossible!" shouted the husband when he knew what happened. "It's almost finished but it would be even nicer if we added some carrots and potatoes." the traveler assured. The husband 6 and handed over the carrots and potatoes. Soon, the smell of the soup drifted (飘) out through the window and down the village. One neighbor followed the smell to the first house and watched from the window. The traveler said it could be better if some beans were added. "I have some!" shouted the neighbor. He couldn't wait to taste the soup so he 7 returned with beans, and poured them into the pot. The smell drifted even 8 down the village.
Word about a strange traveler making soup out of a single stone drew many villagers out of 9 homes there. The traveler finally said, "It's done!" He served a bowl of stone soup for every villagers. From that day on, villagers still remembered the finest soup and they didn't locked their doors and windows tight any more, 10 they finally understood the meaning of share.
Jackie is writing a summary (总结) and feedback about School Day to his teacher. Summary: School Day was held successfully on May 6th. Twenty-four student helpers from Grade 8 were divided into four groups of six. Each group had a task to raise money for the disabled.
All of the groups performed well on School Day and received praise from the visitors. In short, our School Day went well and we got no poor opinions from the visitors. Feedback: Opinions from 100 students have been collected. Most students thought the activities were good. However, some students thought the prices of the school postcards were a little too high. Follow-up: Have a meeting with the headmaster about prizes for excellent student helpers. |
Isn't it amazing how you can hear or read a story a hundred times and yet when you hear it again you learn something new? That happened to me recently when I reread the story below.
In the Middle Ages, a man traveled to a city where they were building a new church(教堂)in the square. He saw many people working on the great new building. He walked up to a strong man cutting rock and asked him what he was doing. "I am a stone mason(石匠)," the man said. "I spend all my days cutting and shaping stones."
The traveler then walked over to a man cutting wood high above him and called out the same question to him. The man called back, "I spend my days cutting and hammering(锤)wood."
Finally, the man walked into the church. Deep inside the church walls, the traveler saw an old woman sweeping the floor while she was singing happily to herself. He asked her what she was doing. "I am building a beautiful church," she said.
I always read that story with a smile on my face. I saw it as a lesson in taking pride in your work and seeing the value in your job. But this time I felt something deeper in my heart. My mind cleared and I saw there was an even deeper meaning to this story. It wasn't only about how you feel about your job but also about how you live your life. Each one of our lives here is a church. Each choice we make is a stone we lay. Each act of kindness we do is the wood we cut. Each moment of love we create builds it up higher and more beautiful.
Many scientists believe our love of sugar may actually be an addiction (上瘾). When we eat or drink sugary food, the sugar enters our blood and influences parts of our brain that make us feel good. Then the good feeling goes away, leaving us wanting more. All tasty foods do this, but sugar has a stronger effect.
"It seems like every time I study an illness, I find my way back to sugar," says Richard Johnson, a famous scientist. One-third of adults in his country have high blood pressure, and up to 347 million have diabetes (糖尿病). Why? "Sugar, we believe, is one of the main reasons," says Johnson.
Our bodies are designed to live on very little sugar. Early humans often had little food, so the bodies learned to keep sugar as fat. In this way, we had energy when there was no food. But today, most people have more than enough. So the very important thing that once saved us may now be killing us.
It's clear that we need to eat less sugar. The trouble is, in today's world, it's very difficult to avoid sugar because our foods are increasingly filled with it. In most advertisements, some manufactures even use sugar to take the place of the fat in foods. As a result, the fat in the foods is less. This may make the food appear healthier, but much sugar is often added.
But there are those who are fighting back against sugar. Many schools are offering more fruit instead of desserts. Other schools are building places for students to do exercise. The battle (战斗) has not yet been lost.
Did your family get together to elect a member to do the dishes after meals? Are you one of the people who think doing housework is annoying?
Washing dishes can reduce anxiety. People who cleaned their plates mindfully, such as focusing on smelling the soap, feeling the water temperature, and touching the dishes, could lower their nervousness levels by 27%.
Clearing the kitchen is closely related to body health. A recent study showed that people with untidy homes were 77% more likely to be overweight. People tend to eat high-calorie snacks rather than green vegetables when they stay in a messy kitchen. As we all know, this unbalanced diet can finally make people lose control of their weight, and can even be harmful to their health.
Your mom is right: Starting your day with a freshly made bed is what people call a "keystone habit". It has a chain reaction to bring about a series of good phenomena(现象). Getting up with a tidy bed every morning is linked to better productivity, a greater sense of well-being, and stronger skills at sticking to a budget. Bed-makers also report getting a better night's sleep than those who leave their covers messy in the morning.
Growing flowers and vegetables can lower depression risk. It can provide aerobic(有氧的)exercise via weeding, cutting, and raking. Additionally, gardening activities such as spading, lifting, and tilling can strengthen and tone your muscles, providing you with good anaerobic(无氧的)exercise. Mild exercise has been shown to decrease anxiety and depression. So does gardening. Its effect on reducing anxiety and depression is evident, too.
A. But few people can realize the effect of it. B. Making bed every morning can raise productivity. C. It looks like relaxing, but the intensity is quite high. D. It may be because choosing healthy food in a messy kitchen is harder. E. The following four benefits of doing housework might change your mind. |

I started to love running at a young age. I couldn't wait to get older so that I could run in the Olympics and win lots of medals. One day my mother saw an ad for a race in a newspaper. "Would you be in taking part in this race?" she asked me, pointing to the advertisement.
"Yes, of course." I answered. I spent the next few days for my big race.
On the day of the race, just before the race, my father said to me, "Don't up all your energy at the beginning of the race. You need to have enough energy so you can run much at the end."
The race began. Following Dad's words, I didn't run as fast as I could. Then other started passing me, which made me feel nervous. I began to feel tired, and I started slowing down. Just at that moment I heard, "Come on, Kelly! You can do it!" I saw Dad running beside me around the outside of the track (跑道).
I took a deep and went on running. I didn't win the race. I came fifth, but I felt like a winner. I , and I didn't give up.
Later, as I thought about the race, I felt that my dad never left my side. He always encourages me when I feel like giving up. I'll remember my dad's words forever, "Never give up, even if you lose."

China was known as "the kingdom of bicycle" about 30 years ago. And these days many people choose to drive cars and use the public transportation, but bike rental (租赁) services are bringing bikes back. Now an increasing number of people are choosing riding instead of driving. The online bike rental services lead to the development of bikes in China.
To use a shared bike, you just need a smartphone. All bikes have GPS, so you can find a bike through your smartphone easily. When you find a bike, you just need to scan a QR code (扫二维码) on the bike, and then you can use it. And you can park it anywhere in public for the next user. Shared bikes help you to work out "last-mile" problems in cities. For example, many people find it difficult to get to the hotel when they get off trains or to travel around the city. Shared bikes provide them with a good choice. Going green seems to be a fashion for more and more people.
Online rental services are making biking more convenient, but it's still not easy to ride bikes in Chinese cities. Cars often take up bicycle lanes (车道). Bikers have to ride next to cars in car lanes, which can cause safety problems. Also online rental services have led to some problems like wrong parking and vandalism (故意破坏).
Now, the government and bike-sharing companies are trying to deal with these problems. Beijing plans to build more than 3,200 km of new bike lanes. Drivers who drive in bike lanes will be punished. Traffic signs will be put up to protect bikers better. Mobike, the biggest bike-sharing company, sets a 100-point credit (信用) score for each user. The points will be taken if the user behave badly. Once the score drops below 80, bike rental will be increased from 1 yuan to 100 yuan per 30 minutes.
