A nickname is a shortened form of a person's name. A nickname can also be a descriptive name for a person, place or thing. Many American cities have nicknames.
Los Angeles has several nicknames. One is simply the city's initials, L.A. It is also called the City of Angels because Los Angeles means "the angels" in Spanish.
Los Angeles often has warm, sunny weather. So another nickname is City of Flowers and Sunshine. New York is called The Big Apple. So Los Angeles is sometimes called The Big Orange because of the fruit that grows in that city's warm climate.
The American motion picture and television industries are based in Los Angeles. So it is not surprising that it is called The Entertainment Capital of the World. Many films are made in the area of Los Angeles called Hollywood. Millions of people visit the area every year.
Many movie stars live in Los Angeles. The city is sometimes called Tinseltown. This nickname comes from the shiny, bright and often unreal nature of Hollywood and the movie industry.
Another nickname for Los Angeles is La-La Land, using the first letters of Los and Angeles. This means a place that is fun and not serious, and maybe even out of touch with reality.
Many people love Los Angeles for its warm sunny weather, beautiful mountains and beaches, and movie stars. That includes Randy Newman, who sings about his hometown.
The winter solstice(冬至) is an important solar term in the traditional Chinese calendar, and means the coming of winter. It generally occurs between December 21st and 23rd. According to the traditional Chinese calendar, one year is divided into twenty-four solar terms. On this day, in the northern hemisphere(半球) the period of daytime is the shortest of the year and the period of night is the longest.
In northern China there is a custom of eating dumplings during the winter solstice. It is said that dumplings were invented by Zhang Zhongjing, a well-known doctor in the Eastern Han Dynasty.
One winter, he noticed that many people's ears were frostbitten(冻伤的), which made him sad. In order to prevent and cure the freezing injury caused by cold, he asked his followers to boil mutton, chilies and other ingredients in a pot for fending off cold. After these were boiled, they cut them into pieces and then wrapped them in dough skins in the shape of ears. Afterwards, they put these into the pot to boil again.
On the day of the winter solstice, people whose ears were frostbitten were sent to eat the dumplings. People who ate dumplings felt warm from head to toe and had their cold injury healed. Thereafter, people ate dumplings every winter solstice.
Afterwards, Zhang Zhongjing died on the day of the winter solstice. In order to honour him, every year on the day of the winter solstice every household makes dumplings.
Self-esteem means you mostly feel good about yourself. It gives you the courage to try new things or make new friends. With self-esteem, you believe in yourself. You know that good things can happen when you try. Self-esteem helps you when things don't go your way. It helps you accept mistakes.
Make a list of the stuff you're good at. Can you draw or sing? Are you a good reader? Are you good at a sport? Do you tell a good joke? If you're having trouble with your list, ask a parent or friend to help you with it.
Think of ways you can do some of the things you're good at every day. You can draw pictures, sing songs and play basketballs etc., which make you have a sense of achievement.
Turn "I can't" into "I can!" Does the little voice in your head tell you "I'm not good at this" or "I can't do it"? Or "It's too hard for me"? That's you thinking badly of yourself. Think, "I can give it a try," "I can handle this." Think, "I'll give it my best." Think, "I'll ask someone to help me do this."
Try your best. You can feel good about yourself when you give something a good try.
Try again. If you miss the soccer goal or lose a library book, you don't get too mad at yourself. You find a way to do better.
Do something meaningful. Do nice things for parents. Help with meals, clean up, or feed the pet. You get to see that what you do means a lot.
Spend time with people who love you. Do things you enjoy with your parents or family. It helps you know yourself better. And that builds self-esteem.
A. Practice the things you do well.
B. Why not decide to change your mind?
C. Here are some steps beneficial to you.
D. When it happens, you will lack self-esteem.
E. When you try hard, your self-esteem will grow.
F. Doing worthwhile things, you feel good about yourself.
G. There are other approaches to helping develop your self-esteem.
